Dr. Norman Rosenthal: "The Gift Of Adversity"

Dr. Norman Rosenthal: "The Gift Of Adversity"

Dr. Norman Rosenthal was the first to diagnose and treat seasonal affective disorder. The psychiatrist on facing adversity and setbacks in his own life.

Today, seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is a widely accepted mental condition. But when Dr. Norman Rosenthal first showed that dark winter months can cause depression -- and that it could be treated with light -- he was met with skepticism. It’s this kind of challenge Rosenthal addresses in his newest book, “The Gift of Adversity." Part autobiography, Rosenthal describes his journey from growing up in apartheid South Africa to his breakthrough work in the U.S. at the National Institute of Mental Health. Along the way, he outlines setbacks in his own life and how we can benefit from inevitable hardship.
