Taiye Selasi: "Ghana Must Go"

Taiye Selasi: "Ghana Must Go"

Taiye Selasi joins Diane to discuss her new novel, "Ghana Must Go." It's the story of an African immigrant family brought together by their father's death after he abandoned them as children.

Critics say 32-year-old author Taiye Selasi is one of the most exciting new writers. Part Ghanian and part Nigerian, Selasi was raised in London and educated in the United States. This biography is reflected in her new book which spans the globe from Accra, Ghana, to London to New York. It's the story of a successful African immigrant family living in Boston. They seem to be fulfilling the American dream until the father, a surgeon, inexplicably leaves. This sets into motion an unraveling family that's repaired only by a reunion following their father’s untimely death. Taiye Selasi joins Diane to discuss her first novel, “Ghana Must Go."

Hi- I am originally from Ethiopia. I have a degree from my country in Computer Science which is accredited to equivalent to US degree. And I have a job but would like to achieve the American Dream. I know somehow somewhere I am going to achieve it. That is why I fled a country of war in late 90's. But it disappoints me when most of Americans think that just because I have an accent don't think that I am smart or can do the job. But gladly I know where I come from and where I am going to. But sadly that is the reality for a lot of people coming from another countries. Easily judged by their accent and their skin color.

I also have had the experience of intuitive knowing on a number of occasions, my brother and my sister have the same ability. There's a psychologist who is doing some documentation on the subject, I just sent her all the experiences that I can recall.

A rare opportunity to meet a young woman of substance and such grand significance, reminiscent of a similarly brilliant woman possessed of the same rich humor and humility, Flora Sussely. The time spent with Diane and Taiye was a moment in heaven. Such a delightful soul and how lucky we are to have been able to spend some time basking in her glow. Thank you, Diane. Thank you, Taiye, from one twin to another. I cant recall a more splendid hour than the one spent with you today. How much richer we all are for your contribution.
