President Barack Obama proposed raising the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour during the first State of the Union of his second term. Washington Post reporter Karen Tumulty said the change is unlikely to take effect under the current economic climate. She described a focus group of lower middle class women who responded negatively to the proposal. "This is not going to be an easy sell," Tumulty said.

USA Today bureau chief Susan Page said the president used his address to set a vision for the country rather than a laundry list of legislative goals. "What struck me about the president's State of the Union address was how aspirational it was because he talked not only about the things he thinks can get done, like an immigration bill. He talked about a series of things that he knows are very unlikely to get done," Page said.

For the 1st time in our history, the Republicans threaten to Filibuster the nominee for Defense Secretary.... Living a life in America with record filibusters and gerrymandering in not working. Living a life in America of constant threats and extortion is not working... It`s OKAY that Republicans hate our government. It`s OKAY that Republicans insist on closing the doors, and ruining an already slow recovery.... What is sad is their denial....Who us ???
We didn`t balk at raising the debt. We didn`t force all these cuts. We didn`t walk out on a Grand Bargain.

"We didn`t balk at raising the debt. We didn`t force all these cuts. We didn`t walk out on a Grand Bargain"

"cuts" what cuts? are you saying you are unaware of the presidents poison pills that ruined any chance for compromise? The prez is responsible for the boot that's on the neck of the economy and no one else.

Many Americans`were introduced to Marco Rubio this week.I was amazed. Must we hear again and`again how government helped these Republicans, only to have them be ungrateful and even resentful. This ingrate got a college education, and now hates the government that provided it. His mom is alive because of services of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The ingrate now wants to end those life saving programs. It reminds me of Paul Ryan, who grew up with the assistance of Social Security survivor benefits, another ingrate. I guess they learned this from the Ayn Rand doctrine.Another ingrate who survived her final years on government programs.

I found Sen.Rubio`s family history amazing. A Cuban family flees the Fascist dictatorship of Batista and comes to Florida, and American freedoms. The son grows up to embrace the same Fascist policies the parents fled. AMAZING!! ...Somehow they forget that it`s the government that gives us our freedom, not a CEO,or Free Market.,but our government ,"Of the People,By the People,For the People".

On occasion the Dems have run a political ad that shows Republican policy, which throws granny over a cliff from her wheer chair. The Republican immediately cry foul. Why? Isn`t that the plan. To end Social Security,Medicare, and Medicaid NOW,or we shut down the government, and risk an even worse recession than we already have.
I can only imagine a Republican created poor house resurected from the past. Places where seniors lie in their urine and poo for days on end .Eating maggot infested food.. Gee,getting pushed off the cliff seems like a kindness.

I have to put my two-cents in for Chuck Hagel. I think it's way past time that an enlisted man is in charge of what wars we get involved in. Sen. Hagel experienced the stark reality of the Vietnam war. He showed courage then and continues to stand up for the "grunts" on the ground throughout his political career. I admire Chuck Hagel and I hope the Republicans stop this nonsense.

February 14, 2013 - 9:31 pm

Would you feel the same if John McCain was appointed by Obama? He has more experience and has endured more hardship in the Vietnam war than Hagel.

Do you understand why republicans are delaying his appointment?

Is a week or two delay in Hagel's appointment too high a price to pay to get to the bottom of very controversial stands on foreign policy regarding the middle east which is at this time in wide spread turmoil?

Do you think the Obama administration should get a free pass on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, are the facts surrounding the death of Ambassador Steven's death important to you in anyway?

Do you know what president Obama was doing while Americans were dying over a period of hours in Benghazi?

Has the Obama administration helped the American people understand what happened in Benghazi by sending out spinmisters blaming a video and then telling us "what difference does it make" ?

Do you have any curiosity why a rescue mission was ordered to stand down?

Are you troubled it took days to have an American presence on the ground in Benghazi after the attack?

Do you think the Obama administration has been as "transparent" as it claims to be?

Well said, anna!

Actually, no....most Americans think Republicans are whack jobs on this "issue".

I think they're still fighting the last election.

Oh, well...it shows the public how out-of-touch they are.

They're on their way out & seem to want to cause as much damage as possible as they leave.

anna nimmity wrote: " Living a life in America with record filibusters and gerrymandering in not working" "We didn`t walk out on a Grand Bargain."

Fact: When it comes to filibustering, the Dems hold the record... You see, the way it works is they were for it before they were against it, and they use it extensively (more times on record than the repubs) when they are in a minority, however; now they are against it... Talk about "flip-floppers" the Dems take the cake. (at whining too)

Fact: The POTUS is solely responsible for the poison pill that killed the "Grand Bargain"... After Boehner agreed to "O"s proposed compromise, the POTUS stuck the knife in Boehners back TWICE, then went on vacation and back on the campaign trail shouting "THE REPUBS ARE THE PARTY OF NO COMPROMISE". And you wonder why Boehner was not standing and clapping for "O" at the SOTU address? Go figure....

Fact: One of the 1st and prime responsiblities of the senate is to pass a budget and be responsible for balancing it... Even though the dems hold a MAJORITY, they have yet to pass a budget... WHY??? Because... then they would have to be RESPONSIBLE for BALANCING IT.....

More than enough blame to pass around on BOTH sides of the aisle. So.... just who is in denial here???? go ahead and say it.... NOOOO....NOT US!!!!

Maybe it escaped your notice, Rubio is a republican not a democrat.

Which party does this more closely resemble?

Definition of FASCISM
1often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

I heard that Congress has gone on leave. They may as well stay on leave. They don't want to do anything when they are there. I heard a retired Congressman (can't remember the name) say that when he was in Congress, they worked a lot more than Congress does today. If this is true, why is this allowed to happen? Oh, right! They have to go home to sound-out their constituents. Sure they do. Most likely they go to the Caribbean.

Just one of many reasons why America is in decline.

Feb. 15, 2013--America---the race to the abyss continues.

USAirways - American Airlines
The big winner is America West. When it merged with USAirways in 2006
, it was the buyer. Now, USAirways is the buyer. So the scrappy little America West from Phoenix is the big winner.

FASCISM
1. any ideology or movement inspired by Italian Fascism, such as German National Socialism; any right-wing nationalist ideology or movement with an authoritarian and hierarchical structure that is fundamentally opposed to democracy and liberalism
2. any ideology, movement, programme, tendency, etc, that may be characterized as right-wing, chauvinist, authoritarian, etc
3. prejudice in relation to the subject specified: body fascism
_____________________________________________________________

The Nazi Fascists exterminated 6 million Jews. They also exterminated 6 1/2 million non Jews.Gypsies, immigrants, unionists, socialists, teachers, non Christians,GAYS,and the sick, and mentally ill.Ring any bells?

Buy a mirror. If you`ve expressed your feelings and they mirror Hitler`s goal of a Master Race, and your goals promotes the "Job Creators",or "Makers".You are just changing the words, not the politics of earlier Fascists. Like Communistm is leftist,Fascism is right wing extremism.

This effort to take down Hagel has been another insult to congress and President Obama's pick for Secretary of Defense. This past Monday Howard Fineman said this on Hardball when talking about the effort to take Hagel down

FINEMAN: What`s missing here is that Dick Cheney is the former vice president, is the guy who propounded his theory of the world, and--and his Republican allies on the Hill are not having a serious discussion about foreign policy in defense during these nomination hearings, whether it`s Hagel or Brennan or whatever.

They`re just taking cheap shots all over the place, and they`re not having a serious discussion....

I think that Lindsey Graham is there to be the last annoying guy to make sure that Hagel keeps whatever promises he made behind the
scenes to Carl Levin and Chuck Schumer and everybody else."

So please discuss what Hagel promised Schumer and Levin to get their votes. As we well know Schumer led the take down of Charles Freeman.

No, people in other countries do not look at this stupidity in the Senate and wish they had the US system. I grew up in England, and the Prime Minister appoints his Cabinet and that's that. There are also far fewer political appointees in general, which leads to greater professionalism in the executive branch.

When I lived in the UK I was a small "r" republican. It didn't take long in the US to convert me to constitutional monarchy.

Clifford, I found your source for this, it came from yahoo answers. The link provided as it's source brought me to what I posted below. What you put up is apparently a deliberate distortion of the original definition.

Oh yes! The minimum wage. I forgot about that one. ROFL!

Ain't gonna happen. Even though the dollar is worth, at most, seven cents (measuringworth.com). Gee, think what a threat that would be to the American Aristocracy! No way they will let that happen.

Ain't gonna happen!

Anna Ninnity- your response is offensive and wrong. You cannot go around accusing everyone who disagrees with you as a fascist. Especailly when you left out the most important part of the definition of fascism, it is a mixed economy whereby the means of production and consumption are controlled by the centralized government (sounds like liberals, huh?).
you should apologize and regrain from posting here, go to HuffPo.

What do your guest think about the SNL skit about the Hagel hearing depicting the power of the I lobby in a very funny and close to accurate way Do you think that this is a breakthrough in many ways even though this skit was cut from the show but has been spreading all over the web since Lorne Micheals and his writers have never NEVER criticized the I lobby, Israel or its right wing policies in 4 decades. Lorne has been one of the media gate keepers on this issue. Criticizing many countries, their policies and their leaders relentlessly But never Israel. A breakthrough of sorts?

Is David saying that the President's approach should not be bipartisan? If so, wouldn't this leave the President with a legacy of polarization?

Politics aside, I believe that President Obama has the right to be addressed by Diane's guests as President Obama or Senator Chuck Hegal, and not by their last names only.

Yes, pancake. That's what we want. Old people in their own feces. I've dreamed of that since I was a kid.
You should take a look at who is more generous; left or right. I've posted links to the studies here before, which consistently show that Conservatives are far more generous than "Liberals" with their OWN money. "Liberals" are only generous with Other People's Money.
Oh ... and on the subject of "fascism"? What is the source of this defintion? Answers.com? Wikipedia? Dan D.'s definition is from Merriam Webster - the definitive source in American for definitions in the English language. You should learn a little more about how the Third Reich enslaved its people to the government in the same way that Liberal Progressives in this country are attempting to do.

One caller asked what we can do to make democracy work better. I suggest that people start paying better attention to local politics and GET INVOLVED in local issues. School boards, city councils, county legislatures -- these organizations have a daily affect on our lives, and often it is difficult to find qualified people willing to run or even accept appointment to local offices.

February 15, 2013 - 11:51 am

I was horrified by the way you tried to dodge the question about the effects of right-wing radio talk shows. It's your main weakness as a host...that you won't allow opinions that you disagree with to be heard.

You missed a great opportunity to discuss the effects of rabble-rousing and perhaps the connection between such talk-show personalities and the earlier-discussed issue of why there are no moderates in Congress.

I would have liked to hear what your guests had to say about the issue of public discourse. Obviously we have free speech (more or less) in the country, but the media also has a responsibility to make people aware of what kinds dangerous activities are going on in their country so that citizens can respond.
