Al Gore: "The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change"
Al Gore believes we are at the dawn of a new future. The former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee claims we’re living in a time of revolutionary change unmatched in history. In a new book, he says we’re racing toward a future that is both complicated and different from anything we’ve seen before. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has identified what he believes are six forces remaking the world, from economic globalization to the digital revolution to -- no surprise here –- climate change. The self-identified “recovering politician” joins Diane to talk about the changes facing our world and his vision for the future.

Former U. S. Vice President and co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management. He’s also a recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change.

Al Gore addressed questions about the 2000 presidential campaign, including whether he and Tipper Gore would still be married if he had won the election. Gore cleared up a common misconception and said he requested a full recount of Florida's votes. The request, Gore says, was denied by the state's governor, who "had a point of view in that race." Gore also talked about how he felt when Bush v. Gore was awarded in favor of President George W. Bush. "Well, you can imagine, it was a surprise," Gore said about the high court's decision. "Some expected it. I felt they were being too cynical. I really felt there was an excellent chance that it would go the other way, but it didn't."
Gore discusses the reinvention of life and death thanks to innovations in DNA. He gives an example in which scientists were able to splice genes from orb-weaver spiders into goats, who then secreted silk from their udders along with milk. Gore said many people describe these genetic mutations, though valuable, as "creepy." Diane pointed out that many people call Gore "wonky," to which he replied, "I plead guilty to being a wonky wannabe geek."
Gore addressed a caller's statement that Sept. 11 could have been prevented had the FAA and intelligence agencies adopted the recommendations of the aviation safety commission that Gore headed while in office. One of the suggestions included a system to automatically catch people on FAA watch lists before they boarded an airplane. "Not many people know what your caller has just said, but it is actually the case. If the recommendations of that commission had been implemented, it would have almost certainly prevented the ability of those hijackers to get on the plane," Gore said.

WillT26 you're creeping us out. You're threatening terrorism over an unproven theory and you need to remember that the story of "Chicken Little" goes all the way back to ancient Sanscrit. Time to "get a grip and calm yourself down". You're not the messiah.
Hypocrisy to me is going on tv,(unchallenged) saying engine exhaust fumes are good for humans and the environment. I challenge these Fox News folks to have a show and tell,Start at your car that`s in your garage. Close the doors, run the can and sit inside. Call me tomorrow. The NUCLEAR waste is good for us knuckleheads are also on Fox News. I think the Japanese were looking for suicide volunteers. You could have proven your position. Why didn`t they do that, maybe Hypocrisy ?
WillT26 asked:
"In what way do I think climate change is going to destroy human civlization? Please let me know. I have a good idea of what I meant but I am curious if you can read my mind."
I don't have to read your mind. I think you answered the question yourself:
"In the face of global climate change, which will result in the deaths of hundreds of millions of people,...Trying to stop 'leading governmental and corporate polluters' is, in actuality, self-defense. Maybe forty years ago it could be characterized as 'terrorism' but we are way past that point now."
And on the subject of eco-terrorism which you seem happy to rationalize, given your model, anyone can use their opinion about a subject to justify any action they want. For example, "I think NASA is covering up Area 51, therefore I can hack their computers to defend myself from alien invasions. I have a right to know the truth!" "I think we are stripping our forests, therefore I have the right to put nails into trees and kill lumberjacks." "I think the FG misbehaved at Waco, therefore I can bomb the Murrah building in OK City." See?
In a country whose foundation is rule of law, such crimes are NEVER justified.

ONE LINK FOR ANY OF THIS, cliff. To a CREDIBLE source. You say Fox News said it? PROVE IT!
I don`t get why Fox News viewers and listeners, who live in the information bubble can`t understand what they`ve been told. They believe climate change is a hoax. So says everyone on Fox News. Ann Coulter, a paid Fox contributor, went on every Fox show that would have her claiming,it`s the news media cover up on just how beneficial nuclear exposure was. Fox News is loud and clear. I can`t recall how many times Fox News contributors have said, carbon monoxide is good for the trees,so it`s good for the environment. Let`s go to 'Show and Tell' . Prove it.
I would like to know why, in 1950 30 percent of all federal revenue came from corporate taxes and now less than 7 percent comes from corporate taxes. But, the cost of living was less in the 1950's, personal tax percentage was less. corporate tax is far below what was paid in the 1950's and yet the cost of living was much less.
Diane,
I am a fan of your show, but was very disappointed in your interview with Al Gore today. To ask him if he thought that a different turnout to the 2000 election might have impacted his marriage differently was an unintelligent and insensitive question. It insults both your interviewee and your listeners, who care about the issue that brought him to the show, not his personal life.

#1 First of all, he will be paying Taxes on it, unlike you Anglicans, Jews and Crypto Jews who park it offshore while they negotiate away their richly deserved Felony Charges for lying to the IRS Etc.
It's none of your Business, actually, but maybe he will tell you if the Bushes will say what they did with the Nazi Blood Money that Granddad "earned during WWII", or Dad and his crooked Sons extorted from the Kuwaitis for saving Kuwait from a War that Dad started, or Twiggy's wealth, probably one of the World's worst and dumbest "Businessmen" who still amassed a fortune entirely from Gifts and Sinecures from Dad's Texas Friends, or the Bush Brothers who were at the centers of the S&L Crises and the Wall Street Bank failures, bailed out by the Government at staggering cost with much of the money ending up in Bush Pockets.
And what's wrong with al Jazeera anyhow, their News is 10,000 times higher quality than the S-it that you Dans, Daves, Joshes and Abes Etc, who own the MSM, produce.
This Morning, the BBC reported that 2 more Polio Vaccination Workers were killed by the Taliban or whoever.
After hearing that, I finally realized, that the Conservative, the World over is a Psycho/Sociopath. He/She denies Science, Reality, Remorse, Humanity, Justice, Truth, Mercy, nearly every Human Value.
And abetted by the D/D/J/A MSM and Zionists who incrementally led us down a path leading to simple barbarity.
#2 Sometimes I wish he'd talk a bit faster, nevertheless, I'm Four Square with President Gore.
I can think of some bigger Windbags, almost all Conservatives.

What a coincidence, just this week, the Media has been hyping a Study that says domestic and feral cats kill BILLIONS of Birds every year.
Some believe that Agricultural Chemicals and practices led to a near extinction of Songbirds which is probably true.
I myself can remember a time when there were many more Birds and another time when there were almost no birds and a time now when they seem to be making somewhat of a comeback.

Considering Al Gore admits lying is OK to push his agenda, attacks upon his character and his contentions is justifiable. Labeling opinions as ad hominem attacks in this case probably fall short of actual ad hominem attacks. Al Gore has over the years shown himself to be a severely flawed individual.
"In the United States of America, unfortunately we still live in a bubble of unreality. And the Category 5 denial is an enormous obstacle to any discussion of solutions. Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous (global warming) is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are, and how hopeful it is that we are going to solve this crisis." -- Al Gore

So far, same old, same old.
Of course Gore ignores the Norway study released this week that concludes:
“It’s appropriate to jump off a ship when it begins to take on water,” Michaels said, “If you look at the monthly temperature anomalies from the University of East Anglia you see no significant trend in any direction going back to the fall of 1996 which would put us at 17 years of no trend.”
Nor does he address the UEA emails recommending to "hide the decline".
I repeat (and repeat and repeat and repeat), Global Climate Change (formerly Global Warming, formerly Global Cooling) is not about temperature changes AT ALL. It is about control.

I am unabashedly fascinated by your,"I repeat (and repeat and repeat and repeat), Global Climate Change (formerly Global Warming, formerly Global Cooling) is not about temperature changes AT ALL. IT IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL."
Will you honor us with a more detailed explanation of your claim???
por ejemplo:
what is to be controlled??
Who is to exert the Control?
Who will benefit from the successful Control?
How will they benefit from the Control??
How will the Public be harmed or helped by the Control??
Thanks,

Monte: Webster says:
Prevarication: def - "to lie, untruth, intentionally misleading, over-stating, any verbal or written statement or action that misrepresents the truth."
An "over-representation" of factual presentations IS prevarication in it's purest form. Al Gore is way guilty of prevarication and do you really want to defend his position that it's ok to overstate or lie about global warming in order to justify your cause or get people's attention??? And you and the whole scientific community wonder why no one is listening and believing???... got credibility???

mchaun, your posts can be summarized with the following:
"maybe he will tell you if the Bushes will say what they did with the Nazi Blood Money that Granddad "earned during WWII"
Well, I don't think Gore will be doing that because, of course, the claim, yet another meme of the left, is patently false.
"Bush was one of seven directors (including W. Averell Harriman) of the Union Banking Corporation, an investment bank that operated as a clearing house for many assets and enterprises held by German steel magnate Fritz Thyssen. In July 1942, the bank was suspected of holding gold on behalf of Nazi leaders. A subsequent government investigation disproved those allegations but confirmed the Thyssens' control, and in October 1942 the United States seized the bank under the Trading with the Enemy Act and held the assets for the duration of World War II.
According to journalist Joe Conason, Prescott Bush's involvement with UBC was purely commercial and he was not a Nazi sympathizer. The Anti-Defamation League and historian Herbert Parmet agreed with that assessment."
The Anti-Defamation League ... but not mchaun! Priceless!
mchaun, you have a real penchant for justifying bad behaior with other bad behavior (whether real or imagined).
Oh ... and "Poor, poor dementia addled man- no perspective, incapable of linear thought, coupled with a 10 Second Attention Span." gets your post flagged as offensive. It is a personal attack against another poster and therefore violates the DR Show Code of Conduct.

That has to be the most tortured rebuttal of a simple desultory statement in History.
And the ADL's Holocaust Survivor Members must have been delighted to learn that Bush was in it only for the Geld.
Plus you underrepresented the the Bush Boys banking corruption which they finessed, as usual. The worst part is that when the Bushes slip their much deserved punishment, then the Govt is reluctant to screw over the smaller Fish. So nobody has to pay.

Actually, it's from Wikipedia. If you think differently, why don't you post whatever evidence you think you have there.

@ Monte Haun:

"Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of FACTUAL PRESENTATIONS on how dangerous (global warming) is..."
An "over-representation of FACTUAL PRESENTATIONS"... really Monte???
Translation=A BIG FAT LIE told intentionally by Al Gore and sucked up by gullible little you....
Pal - If you can't recognize his statement above as a euphamistic 10 dollar sentence meant to justify telling a two bit lie (prevarication) about global warming, then this is a real leading indicator that you truly have lost your grasp on reality.... and truth has no more place in your vocabulary.

I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Al Gore. I respect his intellect and his analytical - and yes, wonkish - approach to issues and policy. I admire his keen, and often self-deprecating, sense of humor - on display in the video clip above with his riff on the word "creepy". I'm always amused by the irrational and inordinate amount of vitriol directed at him by some of his detractors - as seen in so many of the posts in this forum.
I truly believe the United States would have fared much better with Gore as president in 2001-2009, if for no other reason than that he would not have started a war with Iraq, and we would have avoided the great human and economic turmoil wrought by that huge foreign policy blunder. I don't know if Gore would have been one of our greatest presidents, but I very much doubt he would have been what we got instead.
I have plenty of respect for Gore on the issue of energy/climate change, but he really gave a pretty poor answer re agriculture late in this interview. We cannot turn our system into an organic system, we simply lack the needed personel to get that done. Further organic has it's own problems, it is highly tillage dependent which is a big driver of erosion. The modern continuous no till farm is getting more efficent and takes less labor to run than traditional tillage based agriculture and practically eliminates soil erosion, a great killer of civilizations through the ages. It also sequesters significant ammounts of carbon in the soil over time. Until opinion leaders either get seriously up to date on the real state of agriculture and the limits of organic, such non solutions (however popular) will continue to be peddled to the detriment of real progress.
Paraphrasing E.F. Schumacher
An argument against our existing economic model:
What is quite clear is that a way of life that bases itself on
materialism, i.e., on permanent limitless expansionism in a
finite environment (our Earth), cannot last long, and that its
life expectation is the shorter the more successfully it
pursues its expansionist objectives.
