Mass Shootings And Their Effect On The American Psyche
Reaction to Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., has been loud and swift. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on President Barack Obama to make gun control his No. 1 agenda. The dean of Washington’s National Cathedral said, “enough is enough ... the massacre of these 28 people in Connecticut is ... the last straw." A sense of helplessness and frustration is palpable across the nation. While many are calling for more controls on guns and ammunition, others say we must focus on creating a more accessible mental health system. They worry we aren’t doing enough to de-stigmatize treatment. Diane and her guests discuss the effects of mass shootings on the American psyche.

OKay getting really tired and REALLY PISSED about every thing I am hearing about assault rifles. Even on Diane Rehm Show on NPR. For christ sakes people. If someone is in the frame of mind to do something harm to another human being do you think it matters what kind of weapon they use ???? If someone wants to do harm they will find a way!
Think on that...Please...
Understand that I AM NOT defending assault rifles. I don't give a hoot about them. I don't want one, don't care if anyone else has one.
What I do care about is the frame of MIND that someone is in. THAT NEEDS TO BE GETTING THE ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!
Think on this.
What if the money that would be spent on all the necessary steps and implementation of new gun policies was instead spend on educating people on how to be mentally healthy? As a some one who struggled with severe depression I have experienced personally how hard, scary, and almost impossible it is to find help or much less what to do with MYSELF. I am betting I am not alone on this, both the experience of depression and the difficulty finding help.
So just like english and Physical Education we start teaching Mental health in schools. You learn what might help if your feeling low, sad,or lonely. How to communicate. So on And so forth.
You make it mandatory...everybody goes. Every one gets educated. We have an amazing store house of mental health research and tools that have come about from that research...........but where are they? Why are they not being taught to everyone? Why is P.E.
I am also aware that gun laws in regards to mental health has not changed since the 1960s. Yes they most likely need to.
I just wonder what would be the most effective.
To me, I think education is ALWAYS the most powerful thing one can have on their side or to do for them selves. Which of course makes it better for everyone.
That is all
1) Before you start commenting on how safe you will feel if the Phscy. professionals take over, understand that the medicine they dispense has many more misunderstood side effects. They may talk a good line but there interest is twofold, one they money the will make and how they make the individual manageable on the surface but, mentally distroyed.
2) Why are none of theses Phscy professeionals saying anything about the death and murder
role playing vidio games that are everywhere and celebrated.
3) Dare we mention that there is lack of morality and ethics even being hinted at in our education system. where are the mental health individuals on this issue.
4) To the individuals who think that they would prefer the muslim extremist to americans who follow all the gun laws, which are very strict in connecticut and the rest of the nation , all I can do is pray for you that you never have to face the choice of those brave men and women who never got a choice.
5) I thank God I am a American with all my rights and duties and one of those rights is the right of legal firearm ownership , May God bless America.
This is a total overreach, it will never pass in the Congress.

@Clifford
When a person continually uses terms such as NeoNuts and then RANTS about how "they" are causing division and disruption of society, it certainly looks as if you may be pot calling the kettle black.
From reading over many of these comments which are, speaking of the majority, very well stated and excellent points for us as a society and our elected leaders to consider, we must also realize our rights as granted to us by the Constitution are constantly being eroded and taken away from us by the government often for the stated purpose of "protecting us."

Once we give up our rights, we are no longer free. Sometimes that means protecting our rights even if you are opposed to certain segments those same rights afford protection whether it be pornography, the right of a certain hate group to march, or gun ownership.
Remember "Give me liberty, or give me death."
Still can't make a point, can you mchaun?
And Argentine Gauchos? Where do you get this stuff? ... experience?!
The enthusiam of (corporate/xenophobic) America for war and official reluctance to trim military budgets, while squeezing health, educational, and social services appears to put violence on top as the preferred problem-solving tool.
Why are American prisons so over-packed? The nation appears to have degenerated into a state of widespread fear and uncompromising mutual hostility. America has lost its way.
Two things about the shooter and his mother: 1) If your child is 20 and lives at home, you are no longer a 'stay-at-home mom'; you are the caretaker of a disabled adult. 2) If your offspring has an 'unknowable' part of them, do not arm them. A mother's common sense could have averted this tragedy.
Dear pankake head,
Yes, pankake with a "k".
I'll try not to use any big words so maybe you can understand my point. It seems my first post went right over your head.
If trying to turn something I wrote into something else is the best you can do, give up, most people see right through you.
When you can't make a civilized argument, blow hot air.
If you we're paying attention, you would have understood that my point was that Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
By the way, how did you serve your country?
Or do you think you are serving right now by accepting some sort of entitlement?
You don't have to tell us.
@ Clifford:
You wrote:"When it comes to guns the NeoCon way is failing,as like all their other plans.....Our goal should be a civil society for everybody, not a gun shoot out everyday, even taking 6 & 7 year olds. Having people get along, and actually work together rubs against the goal of right wing radio and tv ,and newspapers. Their goal is to divide, and make everyone your enemy. UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL, they know this, and they endlessly are DIVIDING us. The 'Fiscal Cliff', Secession, the NeoNut`s latest divisive goal, made up by anti-American traitors."
Question Clifford: Did you ever consider that your posts are highly akin to the same thing you accuse the "right wing radio and newspapers" of doing. Every single post you place starts out with a rant of name calling and abuse of the "right wingers" or "Tea party NeoCons". Do you realize that you are guilty of doing the same thing you yell about... dividing people??? The sharpest weapon in the world is either the human tongue or the written word. The only difference is, you don't have your own talk show, news cast or newspaper... Thank God!!!!
Sodomite America, listen up! Until you stop nurturing & eliminate your degenerate ostracizing/bullying culture, the violence will keep on coming regardless of however many gun control laws you might pass! Gun control laws only attack the symptom. It is not the cure! If God didn't want these mass shootings to occur, they never would have happened. But because of your sinful ways & wayward walk, God doesn't do a thing to stop it! In fact, God laughs at all your cries!
"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."--Galatians 6:7-8
All these decades of marginalizing God in our lives & thinking that we know better than Him has brought us nothing but misery! God is saying to you, "So, you think you know better than Me & can do better, eh? Alright, go ahead & try." And everytime we, as a society, fall on our faces as a result, God is laughing very very hard! Ignore my words at your peril! The Day of Reckoning is at hand. It will only get worse!
Just got around to listening to this one, and wow, just wow...the bias and poor form in this one goes to show why knee jerk reactions are a bad thing.
First she puts out a straw man, right wing talk radio style, take the worst nutcase who writes a hateful email, read it to characterize your opposition as all crazy, well done diane, taking a page from michael savage or rush limbaugh, and it really didn't get any better from that point on.
Emotion based arguments and people with preexisting axes to grind based on their ignorance of guns makes for a horrible show.
