How about we make a bet? I am willing to put up a C-Note if Romney wings 40 states. Are you going to back up all that talk?
I must take exception to Ms. Rehm's well-meaning apology to the little crying girl (and others) upset about the political candidates. At fault is the adult in charge of that young child's exposure to whatever upset her . American politics is not a pillow fight -- never has been. More important, this is a known. NPR nor PBS owes anyone an apology for its coverage of today's political arena. Consumers of news should practice discernment for their own sensitivity levels of acceptance and certainly for any individual(s) for whom they are responsible. Thank you, Ms. Rehm, for your excellent show, today and always.
I missed the show...
Did anyone raise the issue of the "smart grid" as a way to limit power losses in distressed areas?
Investments in modern infrastructure do have an enormously positive impact on local economies...
The United States has, over the last 30 years, treated its energy infrastructure as a cash cow that did not need reinvestment. The smart grid might have limited the blackouts...

Correct. There is a difference between what a House Budget Committee attempts to do from their extra House Intelligence Committee point of view and what the Commander In Chief does with a live video feed in the Situation Room while American citizens and military personnel are butchered by terrorists with help "standing down".

First, suggest you brush up on your reading comprehension, don. I did not say Romney will win 40 states. I said there is a path for him to do so.
Second, who would hold the money? Or would I "trust" that you'd pay up? And you trust me. These "bets" people propose on anonymous message boards are the height of ... well, you know.
Third, I already have sufficient bets placed in the futures market on the Iowa Electronic Markets website. I love taking money from the liberal students at IU - have been doing it since at least 2004 ... I lose track.
grammar rules,
The "apology" was obviously tongue-in-cheek. They were just trying to have a little fun. Maybe you should try to do the same?
@ecgberht
If you have proof that the Commander in Chief had a live video feed in the Situation Room of the Benghazi attack in the evening of 9/11/12, much less that he ordered a stand down in response to it, please post it here. David Ignatius, whose intelligence sources are significantly more robust than yours, would love to see what you have, as would the rest of us.
@ ecgberht
I consider you a man of your word. If you are serious, step up. Since you are so successful, i should just be another pigeon. But, I suspect, you are doing a lot more bragging than actual betting.
1dondraper, might be better to choose a charity of the other persons choice that takes paypal. A copy and paste of the transaction could probably work here.
I will be here next Wednesday and have predicted a Romney win in the past and today. I just can't believe the country is ready to go down the dead end road of the permanent victim that the Obama administration represents.
don- Beware that pp is his own favorite charity.
"I gave $10K in your name to the Human Fund. "(Seinfeld)
My suspicion is that his disability check was direct deposited this morning.
I am a trust fund girl and I can't waste the time he does on DRShow comments. Boderline personalities thrive on the suffering of others. What better source of gratification than Romney/Ryan hegemony over us 99%.

If I had actually maintained either of those things, you would have a point. What is it with you lefties and reading comprehension?

Well, you can suspect whatever you want. I bet when the odds are with me; whether it's election futures markets or the stock or commodities markets. Take a look at these odds ... I'm going to say they're in my favor:
This is the winner-take-all market. Considering even the most leftist polls say the race is tight, these are pretty good odds:
Contract BestBid BestAsk LastPrice
DEM12_WTA 0.681 0.702 0.702
REP12_WTA 0.310 0.316 0.310
This is the "vote share market".
Contract BestBid BestAsk LastPrice
UDEM12_VS 0.525 0.533 0.533
UREP12_VS 0.470 0.493 0.475
Now come on, not even YOU think Obama is up 53-49!
It's easy pickin's, don.

You do realize the line is not made on who they think is going to win, but to create betting on either side (50%), so the house gets its cut. Do you think this is an even market or are they having to increase odds in one direction or the other to make sure the betting weights are equal? You can snow some guillable kids, but now you are dealing with informed adults.

Do you even know what a futures market is, don?
The "house" doesn't "create a line", it's based solely on the relative activity of participants on either side so no one is "increasing the odds". BTW, the IEM does not "take a cut". You can trade for free.
Perhaps it would be possible to pack more ignorance into a post, but I don't see how.
Oh ... and I'm not "snowing" anyone. Best case is, the students are "snowing" themselves by believing that for the Hope and Change guy, that "this time is different" and they really have hope and there really will be change ... this time! Worst case, the administration is "snowing" them by making them believe he can and should be re-elected.
@ecgberht
As I assumed, you have no proof whatsoever.
All you have is a link to an Op-Ed piece in Forbes. The only section of that piece that relates to your assertion (you stated that the Commander in Chief was in the Situation Room watching a live video feed of the attack on the Benghazi consulate and ordered multiple commands to stand down) does not specifically claim what you assert. The writer says two drones nearby were *capable* of sending real-time visuals, and that anyone in the Situation Room *could* have called up that video. The writer asks who issued the stand down orders. He implies, but does specifically claim, that it might have been the Commander in Chief.
Is the only "proof" you have to offer for your claim this Forbes Op-Ed by a writer who prefaces this "proof" with hypothetical qualifers?
So, you should be fine with a straight bet on the elections. The C note is still out there. Are you going to put your big boy pants on or are you going to keep dancing?
@ Mobed
Thank you for exposing the shape shifter. No wonder he is a Romney supporter. Make false claims, then tries to snow people with fictitious evidence. Didn't work for Jeep and it didn't work here.
I have every sympathy for the people affected by the hurricane, except the REPUBLICANS! They should be left on their own – after all they don’t want government in their lives…
And for all those bone head, flat earth, evangelical, non-evolutionist REPUBLICANS that dispute global warming for their friends in the coal and oil industry – let the oceans wash over them!!!
@ partisan Politics
Should you speak from ignorance? Do you know what stipulations were put in her trust fund? Maybe she has met all the obligations set forth. Tom Glavine set up a trust fund for his daughters heavy on education. It did not mean he did not trust their judgment. He wanted to help them with incentives. Yet here you come, without any information, making comments on people because you disagree with them. Truly sad that you have to behave in appropriately to make yourself feel better. That is a big problem with what is wrong in this country.
As I stated, you don't know what is in her trust and earlier in the thread, she made a joke about the two of you. She hardly attacked you. But given the defeat you are about to take, I can understand the bunker mentality. ;-) Feeling unduly attacked.
So Chris Christie is "fat and a Fool." Diane, you are getting pretty rambunctious. That's a good thing.
You know what scares me...that Romney will actually win, and when conservative ideas fail to turn things around, they will blame Obama for "messing things up so bad that Romney had his work cut out for him." Just the like reasonable minds are trying to explain now...things were so messed up so bad from the previous 10 years of bad Republican and Democratic policies that people just wont accept that it would possibly take more than 4 years to fix. OR, that conservatives will say things "why are you fixating on the past?" (the answer BTW is because if it wasn't for past decisions, we wouldn't be where we are now economically).

1dondraper wrote: "But given the defeat you are about to take"
We shall see.
@mobed,
First, I prefer to go with what I actually said and not with your interpretation of same. Words matter.
"...what the Commander In Chief does with a live video feed in the Situation Room " That is a fact. There was a live feed available and if you think it would not have been viewed by someone once the emails (also constantly monitored) started to flow, you are either in denial or naive - or simply ignorant of the fact that the President would, under any circumstances been apprised of what was happening in real or near-real time. An ambassador under attack in a hostile country rises to that level. In this case, it appears that what the President chose to do with the live video feed and the emails was to ignore them.
That is not the same as "your assertion (you stated that the Commander in Chief was in the Situation Room watching a live video feed of the attack on the Benghazi consulate"
and "with help "standing down".
is not the same as "[President Obama] ordered multiple commands to stand down"
But clearly orders to "stand down" were given. And no, as of this moment, I believe where those orders came from is not known, which is what the father of Tyrone Woods is still trying to find out.
What is unbelievable to me is that any CIC being apprised in real or near-real time of the situation on the ground in Benghazi would not have immediately ordered ANY aid available to STAND UP!!!

"I bet when the odds are with me; whether it's election futures markets or the stock or commodities markets".
A 50-50 bet is the flip of a coin. And it's a suckers bet. If you're so comortable with the futures market, dondriper, you should be willing to offer the same 2-1 odds that it is giving me!
"Are you going to put your big boy pants on or are you going to keep dancing?"
Explain to me again, dondriper, exactly how you're going to set this up? Remember, we are anonymous posters on a mb.
The odds are not 2-1 and you know it. So, back to the original bet. You say your man is going to win, step it up.

Hey don, suggest you reread your fact-filled post about the Iowa Future's Markets.
1dondraper wrote:

Well, that's what the Iowa Markets say! And the odds-makers set that based on balancing the bets or something, right?
Romney has plenty of "paths to the election". The easiest ones to follow have been paved with SuperPAC cash and the Road to the Cayman Islands (.....not to be confused with any of the Bob Hope-Bing Crosby Road pictures).
We have the best health care in the world and the most freedom........IF you have the cash to afford either. The abject poor and working folks have access to NEITHER.
