Friday News Roundup - Domestic

President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney target swing states after the final debate. Federal prosecutors sue Bank of America for mortgage fraud. And new home sales rise to a two-and-a-half-year high. Diane and guests discuss the week’s top national stories: what happened and why.

President Barack Obama suggested he will seek a grand fiscal bargain with Republicans if he’s reelected. Obama told The Des Moines Register this week he would also work to win congressional approval of immigration reform. Mitt Romney’s campaign said he disagrees with Richard Mourdock’s comments on rape, but he hasn't asked that an ad featuring him with the Indiana Senate candidate be withdrawn. New home sales rose to the highest level in two years. The Department of Justice said it will sue Bank of America over allegations it sold defective home loans to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And a look at the legacy of George McGovern. Diane and guests discuss the week’s top national stories: what happened and why.

The panel discussed the political implications of Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comment about rape in a debate earlier this week. Mourdouck said, "I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, it is something that God intended to happen."

Michael Scherer, White House correspondent for Time magazine, said the comment gave an opening to Democrats and liberals to label Republicans as "extremists." "The politics of this is that all [election] cycle, Republicans have really struggled on social issues that in past cycles have played to their advantage," Scherer said. Karen Tumulty, national political reporter for The Washington Post, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney probably wouldn't pull his ad endorsing Mourdock because doing so would focus the story on Romney.

It appears that Benghazi has more impact on the election than Big Bird, Bain, Binders & Bayonets much to the chagrin of President Obama.

Google “Pentagon and Global Warming” and you'll see that after extensive study, the Pentagon has determined that Global Warming is a Strategic Threat to the United States. Google “Arctic Ice Melt and NASA” and you'll see that the Arctic ice will melt by 2030. Doesn't Governor Romney's energy policy of pushing oil, coal and gas throughout the country and offshore undermine the Pentagon's determination that Global Warming is a Strategic Threat to our country? How can the Governor claim he wants to leave his grandchildren and all children and grandchildren with a better world when he's putting fuel on the Global Warming fire, and at the same time, threatening our country and the world by promoting such reckless policies?

Because climate change/global warming/ the sky is falling is not as threatening as the true believes make it out to be. Back in the 70's scientists claimed the earth was cooling. Catch this exchange with Al Gore accolyte Alan Colmes and Senator James Inhofe.

COLMES: Yes, well it’s certainly startling. Tell me what’s behind this and why you’re calling global warming a hoax.

INHOFE: Well, of course, this starting way back in 19 – 2003and that was at the time when, if you remember, they never did submit – the Clinton Administration never submitted Kyoto for ratification. Then right after that, it became very popular. There was a lot of money behind it, the moveon .org people and the rest of them that they started introducing the cap-and-trade bills.

The first ones that were actually done were by Republicans. That was John McCain and I guess.. McCain-Lieberman. But when we started looking at them and evaluating them, it appeared that the cost of that, at that time, came out and it was from WEFA,which is the Wharton Econometrics Forecasting Association or something like that. They said the cost of cap-and-trade would be between $3 and 400 billion a year.

So I thought let’s be sure there’s something to it. And that’s when I started making my speeches on the Senate floor, questioning the science, and Alan, I know it’s hard for you to believe but my phone was ringing off the hook by scientists from all over who had been rejected by the IPCC because they didn’t buy into this thing. So I knew, at least I think almost everyone agrees that the science on this thing is at least mixed.

As someone who DOES believe global warming is real, but DOESN'T believe the Kyoto Accord will solve it, my question is much scarier: are we doomed or can we adapt to the inevitable?

There was another debate this week of Third Party candidates hosted by Larry King. It had Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party, Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party, Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party and Jill Stein of the Green Party.

What effect will any of the Third Parties have on the election this year? Also the largest Party in America - the Non-Voting Party?

@statman2
You posted the same on Wednesday. Again, you conflate GW with AGW. Even if GW is happening, using zero ff from this day forward may not stop it.
@Phil
Either Senator Inhofe is channeling me or I am channeling him. I have been saying this for years - as in Wednesday's discussion, "On AGW, what is critical is OUR REACTION to the possibility. When little more than a theory drives POLICY - especially heavy-handed policy, I have a huge problem with that".

October 26, 2012 - 9:21 am

Statman2 seems to be on some sort of personal distortion campaign to support president Obama, impervious to facts and unresponsive to criticism.

Can you give some examples of these "racist comments"?

The one thing you've said that I agree with. I don't believe this will be sufficient to stop it, and if the polar ice melting isn't reversed- and soon- it is unlikely we will be able to do anything to prevent catastrophic climate change. The release of billions of tons of methane, which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, will alter our environment for millions of years.

And for the Kool-Aid drinkers who dispute Sununu is a racist, here are his own words (and mind you, he is the co-chair of the Romney campaign, not some loose cannon like Coulter

Take a look at the article and decide for yourself. What type of Kool-Aid should we make for you.

October 26, 2012 - 10:01 am

Awesome.
We can add "act like an American", lazy, shuck and jive, and retard (don't get the Donald Trump reference), to our ever growing list of racist words; like "apartment", "law and order," "welfare," "Chicago," "kitchen cabinet," "golfing".

DIANE! WHERE IN THE H___ IS BENGHAZI!!!
When the President looks in the eyes of the American people and lies through his teeth (that's probably racist too) as the leaked emails now show that he did, you don't think that's worthy of discussion???!!! But Richard Mourdock is???!!!

On Tuesday attended the Obama Biden event in Dayton Ohio with my 84 year old mother. The man sitting next to her also in a wheel chair turned to me and said "I was a Republican but switched parties after the Bush Iraq debacle". He had voted for Kerry in 2004 and then Obama in 2008. I let him know that I had worked with lots of former Republicans in south eastern Ohio and in Denver before the Dem convention who were extremely discouraged by the unnecessary wars and how far right (wrong) the Republican party had moved over the last 12 years.

Now with General Powell and Colonel Wilkerson going public with their support of President Obama again. How would your guest say these stances by Republicans voting for Pres Obama effect the race?

October 26, 2012 - 10:15 am

RobMe can say he disagrees with Mourdock all he likes. If he endorses Mourdock then he endorses his views. If pregnancy from rape is intended by "God," then rape must be an expression of "God's will." What's next? Are the wing nuts going to claim that rape is protected by the First Amendment as practice of religion?

October 26, 2012 - 10:22 am

Mourdock's comments about God willing that a woman get pregnant is another attempt to justify the imposition of a male belief system on every woman in the country.

October 26, 2012 - 10:23 am

So Murdocks God has put a seal of approval on rape. This is absolutely insane. Romney supports Murdock. Oy vey

October 26, 2012 - 10:27 am

Dick MoreDock KNOWS what God wants, and what God wants is for that rape victim to carry that rapist's child to term. So the government must ensure, by law, that she does so.

Conservatives, always against government intrusion, except when it allows them to impose their religion on others.

@ecgberht - This is the DOMESTIC hour...

October 26, 2012 - 10:38 am

I think the division of the electorate into white versus non-white voters is largely an artifact of divisive rhetoric from conservatives. My own sister refers to President Obama as "other", as if he is not a real American, and this tracks along well with Republican/conservative efforts to disenfranchise voters of color. The Republicans are using subtle race baiting and fear mongering with their rhetoric and it's hurting the unity of the United States populace. It's cynical and disgusting... For the record, I'm a college-educated, middle class/middle-aged white man.

October 26, 2012 - 10:39 am

The point is that if God is powerful enough to create life he should be powerful enough to prevent the rape - otherwise you are saying God allowed the rape so he could create that life.

October 26, 2012 - 10:40 am

@Bort -- Don't forget that after she has that child, she's got to find a way to raise it on her own because once the Republican gov' makes you go through with your unplanned pregnancy, they're done with you....don't look for any assistance.

You think if the truth about Bengahzi sinks into the American consciousness, it will not affect the election?! The whole tact of the MSM has been to SUPPRESS this story as much as humanly possible until after 11/6. It should be discussed in BOTH contexts because it has relevance to both.

October 26, 2012 - 10:42 am

I can't believe I just heard that it was "a distortion of Mourdoch's words" by liberals that keeps this story alive.

October 26, 2012 - 10:42 am

kathleen wrote:"So Murdocks God has put a seal of approval on rape"

Seriously kathleen! I can't help but wonder if people put something forward like this as serious if they themselves at least feel a bit dirty and demeaned by it.

October 26, 2012 - 10:42 am

All of us need to take caution in speaking for God....I know God is Almighty, and my faith allows me to trust Him with the good and bad in my life. But I don't believe a man -- any man -- needs to tell a woman what's right or moral for her body and her health.

October 26, 2012 - 10:45 am

Why is it politically advantageous to cloak yourself in faux righteousness when you are not running for pastor but Senator?

October 26, 2012 - 10:46 am

Another leftist panel today. Diane's show would do quite well fitting in with MSDNC if public radio can't survive without our tax dollars.

@ecgberht.....The DOMESTIC hour.....

October 26, 2012 - 10:48 am

One of the guest made a comment that heartland folks do not identify with politicians now and they feel left out - that is somehow very bad, he said and hard to deal with... really, hispanics and african americans dealt with it for hundreds of years! Actually, women too.
