The panel discussed what it meant to have actor and director Clint Eastwood deliver a speech at the Republican National Convention. James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic, called it a "surreal monologue." George Washington University professor Steve Roberts said Eastwood's speech was borderline vulgar and changed the tone of the convention. The Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler said the most remarkable part was that the speech came on during primetime television.

partisan.

Where in the speech that you quote does O promise to keep the plant open? Again, if GM announced that the plant was closing, how could the president over-ride that and wouldn't you as a conservative object to that as "the heavy hand of government" sticking itself where it doesn't belong?

Conservative efforts are simply to make people look at "your" set of facts like the site that you offered. And as long as we keep doing that, we are not going to get anywhere. The most telling line in the above speech was "and that's the future I'll fight for as your President"....all the while the Republicans are quickly undermining anything that could be done to assist the recovery because they want him to be a one term guy.

The Rush Limbaugh plants are running about too. LOL

How does that go "you can have your own opinions but not your own facts" How many of Ryan's alleged facts are being proven to be lies?

Because someone has discovered a "technicality" that the plant was still open in April. Thus Ryan is vindicated. How absurd.

Speaking of being misleading, Robme and Lyin' both stated that they got behind the President when he was elected, but that also was a lie. The President hadn't even been sworn in yet when the Rethuglican leadership decided to sabotage his Presidency by making him a one term President. They decided that ANY serious initiative that would produce jobs and improve the economy, would not get through Congress. The party of "no." A Robme Presidency wouldn't be anymore "bipartisan" than the Bush Presidency was that preceded it.

August 31, 2012 - 10:25 am

So worrisome...If Romney captures 55% of the white vote and Karl Rove and the rest of the Republicans do everything to disenfranchise minority voters. Please talk about the continuing and nation wide efforts to disenfranchise voters

Not to mention what the Supreme Court is going to do in the event of a close election. The rich have paid a lot of money and they want their country! It belongs to them dammit, they've paid for it. 1.2 billion worth.

You back down, you come here with a pail of excrement and throw it on the comment board and now pretend you had noble purposes!

CLINT EASTWOOD --

Yes, it was bizarre, but since Clint is such an icon, whom we all love (I think), I dismissed it as an attempt at levity, and it was "INTERESTING".

So things didn't turn our exactly perfect - I excuse them for giving it a try, though surprising it wasn't more controlled by RNC.

However, I admit it was disappointing to see Clint looked like he was getting SO OLD that he's "losing it"! Rambling, cracky voice, even crude.......

Are the conventions worth it? Of course they are; at least to those who made money off of them.

Otherwise, they are a worthless farce filled with misinformation.

RIGHT HERE!

"And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years."

So, President Obama went to the Janesville GM plant and told them that if the policies he supports were enacted, the plant would "be here for another hundred years". If a presidential candidate comes to your plant and tells you the execution of his policies will keep it open for another hundred years that's a promise or a guarentee or whatever you want. However, it most certainly isn't meaningless as Politifact would like us all to believe.

August 31, 2012 - 10:35 am

The most glaring difference between Obama and Republican platform is that Obama is willing to speak long term (50 years down the road) which is a Sustainable perspective. The Republicans say nothing about long term Sustainability of our economy, moreso "we'll fix everything in my term". After the past four years I would think the Sustainability of our Nation should be a primary platform plank. Obama definitely is. The fix of Bushes period in office is a long term fix.

I enjoyed learning that Romney is not the heartless, "wooden" guy the media says he is.

I was very impressed by the (formerly) quiet works of charity and compassion he has done over a lifetime. It's only right that these were revealed last night. Too bad most stations didn't show that part, and this a.m., the talk is about non-substance like Clint E.

I always watch these things on C-span so I can see the whole thing. Also can make up my own mind instead of the 'talking heads' telling me their opinion!

August 31, 2012 - 10:37 am

Funny. From Lincoln's party Republicans became Jeffreson Davis' party.

49% of republicans are from South. 90% white. Only 2% of delegates are minority.
55% percent of welfare recipients are white.

"President Obama went to the Janesville GM plant and told them that if the policies he supports were enacted, the plant would "be here for another hundred years"

And the Republicans lined right in there behind O to help him out with that recovery right? That's what I thought.

I still do not see anywhere in that speech where O said "And I will see to it that this plant is kept open".....it's not there.

August 31, 2012 - 10:37 am

I am an Independant voter looking to find a good fit with either candidate. I tend to think Romney's economic policy is stronger, but I can't vote for the socially conservative policies. I vote for reproductive rights, gay marriage, environmental protections, and dealing humanely and responsibly with immigration.

I don't believe religion has anything to do with good social policy and I feel like we're treading dangerously close to a slippery slope of infringing on religious and personal freedoms for ALL citizens.

" Of course we all know Biden is the intellect of the Democratic party."
Clint Easttwood at the RNC

How will th DNC top that?

August 31, 2012 - 10:40 am

"President Obama went to the Janesville GM plant and told them that if the policies he supports were enacted, the plant would "be here for another hundred years"

The decision to close JAmesville plant was taken by GM in June 3 2008. Guess which administration it was?

I grow weary of Rmoney talking about how he is a successful business man . I would like to know how much money he STARTED with. monies from his Father. it takes money to start with (in many cases) to become as successful as this man. yesterday there was the world richest woman talking about how if people got off the chair stopped drinking and smoking they could become rich. Failing to mention......She inherited 75 million. LOL success starting with nothing that is true success (ie BHO)

There have been numerous reports that when Bain Capital was formed as a spinoff from Bain & Company, that Romney was told he had to get investors outside of Bain & Company. The reports are that his initial investors were connected to drug cartels and death squads in Latin America. Could your guests comment? While talking about the American economy one of those regulations that Republicans want to do away with is the minimum wage and reduce the living standard of the American worker even further.

August 31, 2012 - 10:47 am

Caller that was a POTUS Obama voter in 2008 and still a Democrat has finally seen the light (despite the lame stream media including NPR/Diane Rehm's attempts to prop up Obama) She is voting for Mitt

August 31, 2012 - 10:47 am

To further support Steve Robert's thesis that Republicans are using a subtext that tells the middle class their money is being taken away and used to support "welfare queens" and other undeserving people, consider Ann Romney's speech. In her speech Mrs. Romney said that Latinos should vote for Romney because "we share the same family values and strong work ethic." We being the Romneys or the Republican Party. Why mention work ethic and Latinos? Part of it is a repetition that reinforces Mr. Romneys work ethic, but there's more than that.

When you say, join our party, vote for us because we share the same ... work ethic, you are implying that the other group, the Democratic party, does not have the same work ethic. So Latinos in particular should be Republicans because they have a strong work ethic, as opposed to supporters of the Democrats and/or Obama. Who are those supporters who don't have a strong work ethic and are for Obama? The welfare queens, i.e. African Americans.

I'm surprised no one has picked up on it.

I stubbed my toe this morning...I guess THAT was Obama's fault too? Have any you geniuses ever thought that maybe things were so messed up from 10 years of Republican AND Democratic policies that it would take more than 4 years to rectify? Trying to clean this up is like cleaning up a room, fixing an automobile, or surgery...you have to make a mess to fix the problem!
