Bob Spitz: "Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child"

A new biography offers a portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential Americans of our time. It's the story of Julia Child's search for her own expression, published on what would have been her 100th birthday.

Decades before the Cooking Channel or “food celebrities," Julia Child captivated her television viewers with “The French Chef." The woman who brought fine cuisine into the homes of average Americans transformed the way this country thought about cooking and eating. A new biography says the mark she left went well beyond the kitchen. Her biographer describes Julia Child as an early feminist who taught women to find pride in their work and to take charge of their lives. Today would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday. To talk about her life and legacy, Diane sits down with Bob Spitz, the author of the new biography, “Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child."

I bought the cookbook "Mastering The Art Of French Cooking" at least a month or two before the movie "Julie & Julia" was released at the movies. I'm getting inspired to make some Boeuf Bourguignon!

She was a remarkable woman! I certainly admire her perseverance. You can also read excerpts from her 1991 interview about life in the Foreign Service on the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training at www.adst.org. There's also the great photo of her and Paul in the bathtub.

I was born in Bad Godesberg Germany and my mother always said that Julia Child baked my sister's birthday cake for her second birthday. My father was with the State Department. I wish my parents were still alive so I could ask them questions about this cake. When I read the book My Life in France she mentions being in Bad Godesberg at the time I was born :)

I loved watching Julia when I was in high school. Her down to earth style and humor really impressed me. We were given the Art of Mastering French Cooking as a wedding gift and I immediately made Beef Bourguignon and Beef Wellington and they turned out great. I really want to find some DVDs of her shows. Do they exist? Where do I find them?

The not so dirty little secret is that Julia Child was one of the first feminists. In my humble opinion, she exemplified most of the best characteristics of feminism. She refused to limit her aspirations. She broke down many barriers for women. And she did it all with her characteristic kind, gentle and inoffensive manner. Most of all, she never took herself too seriously. Happy centenary, Julia.
