Friday News Roundup - Domestic
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of dismantling federal welfare reform and creating a “culture of dependency.” The U.S. economy continued to send mixed signals. And victims of the Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting were remembered at vigils across the United States. Ron Elving of NPR, Nia-Malika Henderson of The Washington Post and John King of CNN join Diane for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

The panel discussed why President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney have not discussed gun control following a shooting that left seven people dead at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin Sunday. Nia-Malika Henderson, national politics reporter for The Washington Post, said the U.S. doesn't have an appetite to curb gun use. She said a recent Quinnipiac University poll found 60 percent of Americans think stricter gun laws would have no effect on mass shootings. Ron Elving, Washington editor for NPR, talked about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's call for the presidential candidates to debate gun ownership. CNN anchor John King said every state has a different position on gun control. "What's frustrating in the political system is, like immigration, like taxes, we can't even have a conversation," King said.

I hope John King has access to the CNN presentation of the T-Party/Republican debate. The one where they loudly cheered for Americans to die, from no health care.
The T-Party individually may not be guilty of killing the ill,but they sure applaud loudly when we die !
I hear in the the media that the totally false ad that says Romney is responsible for the death of democrat hit-man Joe Soptic's wife being compared to the the true "swift boat veterans" and the true "Willie Horton" ads, although controversial those ads were based on real testimony or are factual, some of those men did serve with Kerry, Dukakis because of previous bad judgment did release Horton and he was indirectly responsible for murder, nothing about the Soptic ad is true. Soptic's wife had insurance of her own and died years after Romney was gone from Bain, Sopitics place of employment was also closed years after Romney was gone and he was offered a buy out. In any case no reasonable person could expect all companies can and should be saved. Please explore and explain this media distortion.
"in 1976 Governor Dukakis vetoed a bill to ban furloughs for first-degree murderers. It would, he said, “Cut the heart out of inmate rehabilitation.”

The Susan G.Komen Foundation gets another shake up. What were they thinking when they allowed T-Party infiltrators to poison that once fine charity?
Why are we tolerating the T-Party putting shaming probes into our women across the country?
Why are we allowing the T-Party sanctioned for profit schools,to force girls to take pregnancy tests or face expulsion?
Where are the men in this country? You used to care when strangers put things into our women without their permission. You don`t even speak up in favor of the Violence Against Women`s Act. My oh my,WHAT COWARDS !
Another controversial ad that claims Obama is undermining "welfare reform" is also true but is widely reported as being false. Obama seeks to change the welfare laws work requirement to receive welfare benefits by making it easier for states to relax work requirements and enable more people to receive federal welfare, states have little incentive to worry about the costs because it's a federal program and that's exactly why the law was written the way it was, to stop this abuse. My interpretation of the law clearly indicates that the law has been broken by Obama and HHS and it's just waiting to be overturned by court order probably sometime after the election.Since there is absolutely no evidence to support the idea that president Obama is in anyway concerned with federal spending deficits and these changes were made late on a Friday, a well known tactic to fly things under the political radar, who could possibly buy the notion that this was to "strengthen" the law. It is also misleading to say that some republican governors asked for relaxing the law, this is a lie, they wanted to strengthen it.

" HHS's assertion of authority to waive the law’s work requirements. That authority doesn’t really exist in the statute, and is therefore of questionable legality"
HHS insists that the whole point is to strengthen the law’s promotion of work, and points to a requirement that any waiver must be tied to a plan to increase the number of people moving to work by at least 20 percent. But of course the easiest way to do that is just to enroll far more people in the program. And as Clinton pointed out in his 2006 op-ed, the biggest success of welfare reform was reducing the rolls. The Obama administration may not have actually gutted welfare reform. But it has put a big, sharp machete up to its belly
http://reason.com/blog/2012/08/08/do-new-hhs-work-requirement-waivers-gut
"The charge is based on a July 12 memo issued by the Department of Health and Human Services, in which HHS said it would consider approving waivers for states seeking more flexibility in implementing welfare reform, officially known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF.
The memo prompted outrage from many congressional Republicans, who have charged the Obama administration is changing a requirement of a law passed by Congress in an executive branch power grab.
But does the memo do what the Romney campaign charges — that it guts welfare reform, gets rid of work requirements entirely, and would “just send you your welfare check”?
Not exactly. The memo states, for instance, that HHS “will only consider approving waivers relating to the work participation requirements that make changes intended to lead to more effective means of meeting the work goals of TANF.”
In other words, a state would have to offer an alternative program similar to the work requirements first put into place by the 1990s welfare reform law in order to receive the waiver"

These requests were made by T-Party governors......
With Mitt Romney outsourcing so many jobs to China my compassion says to ease the job requirements until there are jobs. The unemployed have been shamed enough by the T-Party.Mandatory forced drug, blood and alcohol testing, just to get the unemployment checks these people are entitled to receive.SHAME ON YOU MR.T-PARTIER,HAVE YOU NO DECENCY !!!!
Could you please explain why Mitt Rmoney won't release his tax returns. Is it possible that he paid no taxes or perhaps even got a refund in spite of making millions of dollars? And when he says he "paid taxes every year, as far as he can recall" is he leaving himself wiggle room in case someone else "releases" them for him?
"Whitewater" began as a simple, legal, tax deduction on the 1980`s tax return of Bill and Hillary Clinton. That tiny little thing led to Ken Starr,Monica Lewinsky and impeachment.
Imagine tax returns that prove a connection with outsourcing specialists like the U.S.Chamber of Commerce, who facilitate corporate moves to China and elsewhere.A tax return is a money trail,PROVING,who Romney screwed over.
John McCain saw the Romney returns. He thought the loopy Sarah was better. Nuff said !!
Please discuss the voter suppression activity occurring in the democratic counties of the powerful swing state of Ohio.
Media hoists the mobile before our infant eyes. Oh Look! There's tumbling sparklers and chemically perfect bods at the Olympics. There's two pitchmen promising prosperity and tax cuts. Don't look at the famine in our Breadbasket or the next Bubble loading up. Save those shocks for 2013. How many mass killings will be required to keep us babies interested? That's a loaded question.
Grown-ups understand that our rigged mock elections ain't no big thang. The sociopath who wins becomes a hostage.

"My interpretation of the law clearly indicates that the law has been broken by Obama...". Your interpretation holds no bearing on any issue. Interpretations are like those other things that everyone else has one of. You want to rehash old material that most posters on this site have heard and discussed many times before. If your purpose here is to try to sway us to your view then give us new information, ideas and perspectives.
"Another controversial ad that claims Obama is undermining "welfare reform" is also true but is widely reported as being false."
What this is is just Republicans returning to their tried and true strategy of: "Obama is going to give welfare to those lazy, no good blacks." That's why Gingrich ("We need those lazy black kids to scrub toilets to learn their place.") was brought in push the story. Same old same old from the Republicans.
Dawn Castle wrote:"Your interpretation holds no bearing on any issue. If your purpose here is to try to sway us to your view then give us new information, ideas and perspectives"
This topic is mentioned in the show format for today! see above
As for my "interpretation" isn't that the purpose for allowing commentary?
I am not trying to sway anyone, just trying to keep the show honest.
The manager of a baseball team flies off the bench and gets in the face of the umpire when he sees a bad call -- not because he thinks the ump will change his call, but for the ump's next call.
To defend the Justice Department's failure to do the right thing because it might fail at trial misses the point: To Call Em as you Sees Em!
Newt Gingrich is too proud to scrub his own throne and too broke to hire help.
Looking at the bulbous cut of Romney's jeans I doubt he has used a toilet in years. Maybe that will be the function of his VP nominee, changing the nappies. "There's a stinking bucket of tax returns soaking in the laundry room... hop to it, Old Man."
Regarding gun control legislation, Diane's guests mouthed the usual "nobody is going to do anything" blather, which is not very helpful. There is information on the Internet:
"On July 31, DeGette and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY-4) introduced the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, which they say would make it more difficult for people to anonymously stockpile ammunition, as the Aurora killer had reportedly done."
"Leading Democratic gun reformers proposed Monday to ban online ammunition sales in the wake of the Colorado movie theater shooting in which the suspect allegedly purchased thousands of bullets via the Internet.
Sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), the bill is designed to make it tougher for violent people to obtain the firepower they intend to use on others."
Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a wider movement.
Do any of your guest know if the mosque in Joplin Missouri or the Sikh temple in Wisconsin had received any of the DHS Homeland Security funding for preventive surveillance measures?
We have been having quite the discussion over at Mondoweiss (premiere website) ""Missouri Mosque burning Iman says 'tragedy' will not 'stop us". Turns out according to an article in the Forward and other sources that 97% of that funding goes to Jewish organizations.
Please discuss the way this funding is distributed
Nia-Malika Henderson
See what I mean, she just mischaracterized the the changes to "welfare reform" big time. Does anyone in their right mind think Obama wants to make welfare harder to receive???
Former Governor Romney, Newt Gingrich on Washington Journal yesterday both want welfare to be re-examined yet these same individuals do not support fair wages, health care for all. raising taxes on those making millions billions paying people pathetic wages like Wal Mart owners.
Please address these serious contradictions.
Re: Justice Dept and Goldman Sachs
Justice abandoned the case because it wasn't strong enough GIVEN THE LAW. Who wrote the law? Doesn't this bring us right back to money, politicians, and lobbyists? We shouldn't be surprised that the law as written makes it difficult to successfully prosecute a case against a member of the financial industry. Look at Mr. Mozillo! Was that justice?
I believe former Governor Strickland and Senator Sherrod Brown made a huge mistake awhile back supporting Lee Fisher against former Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner who were both running for the Dem Senator ticket awhile back. Portman was clearly the Republican candidate. National polls showed that Brunner stood a much better chance in that race. Portman slammed Fisher. Strickland, Brown the Dem machine could have cut Portman off at the knees then. Instead they played the white boy game. It was a perfect moment for a brilliant woman candidate Jennifer Brunner to become the first woman Senator from Ohio. Now we see Portman as a real threat helping the Romney ticket in this upcoming Presidential election
Please consider dropping John King from the show. He says on the one hand, but on the other hand. He should have been an economist. It isn't analysis. It is just filling the air with zero substance. We need opinions and insight, not the continual use of false equivalencies.
As a result of his use of false equivalencies, the impact of the hour is greatly diluted which reflects on Diane, not John King. Please think of his show and when has he truly confronted anyone on his show. What controversial interviews has he done with any major political figure? He is a good looking facilitator which is why he is on TV, but he is not an analyst. He talks fast but without bringing anything to the table.
Romney is pushing tax cuts for the wealthy. I want to see how much Romney has tailored his tax cut plan for his personal financial benefit.
I think he won't release his taxes because he made a killing in the 2008 economic disaster and when we see that he made millions on the destruction of our economy and the middle class.
I just wanted to point out that almost 74% of the "people" on welfare (TANF) are in fact, children.
This is according to US Department of Health and Human Service statistics (2011). There were a total of 4,559,126 people who received TANF and 3,409,383 of those were children. Quite a few of those children (almost 800,000) are listed in "no-parent families", which I take it means they are being raised by foster parents or aunts or relatives of some sort.
Does the GOP plan on forcing foster parents or grandparents of welfare children to go to work? Or are they advocating, a return to child labor and workhouses for the children? The good ole days of Oliver Twist?

Romney's tax returns!
How about this?
The word is out that the only way Obama could have been allowed to enter prestigious colleges with bad grades is through a foreign exchange student program, he was not a U.S. citizen on his college applications, a program that would allow for poor grades and an inability to pay for the tuition. Obama went by the name Barry Soetoro when he lived in Indonesia, why is it such a stretch that he did enter college as a foreign national and not a citizen of the U.S. Why are so many of Obama's records deliberately made unavailable and hidden from the voters, we have a right to find out the truth about who we elected in 2008 and why he has governed the way he has and why we should give him four more years. The only reason someone would need to hide such basic information from the voting public is because the information in these sealed documents would destroy his chances for reelection.
I'd like to see more testimonial ads featuring people who were bankrupted and lost their health insurance at the hands of Mitt Romney while he walked away with millions.
I'd also like to see more ads about Governor Romney out-sourcing Massachusetts government jobs to India.
Ads showing Mitt's flip-flops and "I'm running for president, for Pete's sake" comments.
The Democrats have been far too easy on Romney. If they had gone after Romney the way that the Republicans went after Clinton, Gore, and Kerry, Romney would be at 20%, not running even with President Obama.
Would your panelists please provide context of the indices cited (voter confidence, unemployment rate over 8%, etc. as guidepost for whether Mr. Obama can be re-elected), namely, those prior presidents did not inherit the worst financial breakdown since 1930's, and they did not face the willful obstruction starting from day 1 of Mr. Obama's term. To hep undecided voters, maybe you would compare what differences Romney and Obama presidency regarding to middle class, e.g., taxes, health care, small businesses, job creation potential of their respective policies?
Recall what Norman Ornstein and Tom Mann's interview on your show earlier this year, what do your panelists think whether their comments are sufficiently calling out that the jobless rate and consumer confidence are very much the doing of a Republican Party that has turned extreme?
Really partisan???
Are you drinking the Donald Trump/Orly Taitz Kool-Aid again?
partisan pol: How's life in Romney's diaper pail?
How about attacking Obama for his failure to oppose the Oligarchy, and for his erosion of our human rights rather than making up stupid stuff. When the filth sticks: It sticks to you.
Please go to FactCheck.org before you make such erroneous claims about Mr. Obama's attendance and high accomplishments at Harvard.

The word is out that Mitt Romney is actually an alien from Kolob who was brought to Earth by a Mormon prophet. Romney needs to prove that he is really a human-being born in the United States. We have a right to find out the truth about who Mitt Romney is before we elect him president.
