Senator Marco Rubio
Sen. Marco Rubio has been called the political equivalent of a rock star. The son of Cuban immigrants, he has risen farther faster than just about any other Latino in American politics. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for eight years and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 at age 39. His name has been one of a handful frequently mentioned as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney. But his tough stance on immigration has made him few friends among U.S. Hispanics. In a new memoir, Sen. Rubio writes about his political ambitions and mistakes – and his ideas for America's future.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) addressed what he takes into consideration when making decisions, including what he would consider if presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney chooses Rubio to be his running mate. The nation’s largest Tea Party group endorsed Rubio as its pick for vice president Wednesday. Rubio said he agrees with the tea party movement's concern that the U.S. government is overstepping its constitutional mandate. "I think one of the most unfair things that's emerged in American politics over the last couple of years is this definition of the tea party as an outside-the-mainstream movement," Rubio said.

I hadn't heard Senator Rubio interviewed in depth previously, and I was impressed with how articulate he is. He also seems pretty slippery. Ths guy was made for a political career.
I can agree that Diane might have used back-up on questions that had to do with the tax code. Rubio is like a collegiate debater in his last year on the team... slick, superficial, and well coached to make his points.
He also came across as brittle and not nearly as "rational", particularly on his response to the issue of the Bachman/McCarthy parallel and his stand on the Voter ID issue.
I do not agree that Diane did not have a right - she in fact had a duty- to call out Rubio on his "too quick" and slick responses. She was neither impolite nor partisan. I wish that more "legitimate" (I'm not talking about Fox here) analysts had the guts to call out hypocrisy and misinformation.
Good job, Diane, ignore today's criticisms!
It seems that Senator Rubio is incapable of leaving the campaign mode to engage in thoughtful, respectful conversation. I found him to be overbearing and rude to his host. How lovely and ironic that the following guests spent some time describing speech patterns similar to Rubio's as being evasive and less than honest.
Dianne let Marco off on 2 of his key points. Understandable that she might not personally understand the tax issue, but issue 1, according to Marco was a report in the Washington Post that President Obama warned hispanic activists not to cooperate with Sen. Rubio. He said it and Dianne did not ask him for any proof. Is there any proof?.....maybe not. But the other issue, on which she can be forgiven, is Marco's claim that people making $250,000 would see their Federal Income Taxes rise to over $100,000 (as much as a 400% increase). That's simply a lie and she should have questioned him on it. Instead she let him lie on her show and gave him a "pass."
Marco said he got his facts from the Washington Post and Ernst & Young, but most of us who heard his statements know where he really got those 2 facts.
Actually the show today was very clever. After having an interview with Marco Rubio, Dianne followed up with a show on how to tell when someone is lying...........perfect.
My understanding is that the Obama administration and the Congressional Democrats are proposing to let the Bush tax cuts expire on income above $250,000. That means that only income ABOVE that amount would be taxed at the highest Clinton era marginal rate of 39%, instead of the current 35%. If that understanding is correct, Rubio lied when he said a small business with a revenue of $200,000 would have its entire income taxed at 41%.
Perhaps someone has already pointed this out.
Diane Rehm and NPR came across today as what they really are - another media arm of the Democrats.
Rubio kicked butt. I don't blame him for eventually getting annoyed by Diane repeating the same questions over and over.
Sometimes the Grandma mask slips, and the partisan liberal harridan below comes into focus
Anyone who listens to NPR, well, anyone who isn't a typical liberal listener, knows that in an election year it's time for NPR to increase their already obvious support for the Democrats
I think it's fitting that Senator Rubio is interviewed the same day as the authors of Spy the Lie. Senator Rubio is excellent at political speech and non-answers. He's combative and adversarial. His opinions of opponents and critics borders on paranoia.
I lstened to the program this morning. Before I comment on Rubio want to commend NPR for a stellar week. Servant Economy discussion Tuesday, and today's interview were stellar and Fresh Air had two home runs in the Women Religious Interview and David Kirkpatrick.
My Experience with the Tea Party in Alabama is much different from the sanguine warm milk spin of Rubio. The leader of the Dekalb County Tea Party, Mary Anne Cole is hardwired to Eunie Smith of the Eagle Forum. Eunie's Husband Albert Lee was a Bircher and leader in the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention.
It was Eunie by published accounts who introduced St. Senator Beason to Kris Kobach. Kobach wrote the Bama law. Kobach also toured the S.C. Primary with Mitt Romney.
So Rubio has some explainin to do about the Bama chapter of the Tea Party when it comes to Immigration reform.
Hope DRShow will have as guest soon the author of the April Mother Jones 8 page feature on Bama Immigration Bill "Self Deportation"; a piece I recommended to Senator Shelby at a Town Hall hoping he will discuss it with Bama Coach Nick Saban's wife, a devout Catholic.

With outgoing Bama UMC Bishop Willimon the former Chaplain at Duke, maybe we can have a more honest conversation about the Tea Party and Immigration than the benign version of Rubio this morning.
Diane, your prejudice is showing.
So the senator has 300 stations on his satelite. Not everyone can afford satelite. I can't. Many quality programs on cable are not available to me. PBS is my only option.
Another example of rich people being out of touch with reality.
Happened to tune in today and what a surprise. I have never heard Dianne so unprepared. I felt her talking points must have been taken from some 3rd rate blog and not from a professional interviewer. I felt embarrassed for her as she tried to force the misinformation especially about the Senators office expenditures. NPR interviewing is consistently biased as is its news coverage. I found the second half of the show was about lying was interesting due to my belief that lying by omission is how NPR pushes its agenda had questions, hardball's for the Right and softball's for the left.
I believe that Marco Rubio was disrespectful towards Diane and listeners. It was very difficult to hear him speak over and argue with Diane. He did not come across very well, good luck Florida!!
Why do all those who hate government expend SO much time, energy, and money trying to become or remain an elected part of their hated object?
Paraphrasing Mark Twain, I would not join a club which would have me as a member. And per Will Rogers, I'm not a member of an organized party......I'm a Democrat.
Sen. Rubio seems to be following his personal biases in his book and his speaking. In that sense he is as genuine a politician as any other. It remains to be seen if he can elevate himself to the point of being a true statesman........bashing liberals in general is evidence he is still on his journey.
And isn't ironic that the GOP is pushing a strong campaign to label the Pres as "unamerican" and "kenyan" and even "muslim" while suuposedly touting the ethnic background of Rubio et al? It's another political doublespeak. By the way, nobody discussed the irony of John Sununu, as a person of middle eastern descent, being the point raptor on this silly unamerican diatribe. If that's what the GOP believes is a valid approach, the God help the rest of us whose forebears came here from elsewhere. NOTE: even the ancestors of "native americans" walked/canoed here from elsewhere.......an indisputable fact.
I am glad Senator Rubio spoke about the complexity of the immigration reform. I wish I could have asked him why it is a matter of humanitarianism to accept Cubans who arrive illegally but no, for example, Haitians, who are dying because of socio-economic conditions. Yes, it is indeed, complex, but because of politics and winning Florida in election time. I am also glad that he talked about absolute transparency in the electoral process, too bad he forgot to mention the Florida case, in the 2000 Election.
Dear Diane,
You ARE the BEST. Please continue to present important guests and issues, especially when they are so appropriate to current situations. Your demeanor is straight arrow, providing questions and insights that elicit important meaningful responses. You walk that fine line between being both supportive and challenging to the guests and callers......successfully. Guests and callers should always do you the courtesy of allowing you to lead the discussion and sticking to the topic, rather than blustering or talking over........it's YOUR show......they accepted YOUR invitation to speak.
Rubio's view that it is reasonable to make massive expenditures to prevent the diminishing small chance of result-changing election fraud despite his alleged love of fiscal responsibility is typical of the Republicans. Any incoherent stance that can convince the average low-information voter will be used in pursuit of power and corporate dominance.
My god he talks fast o_o Slow it down, Rubio! You're just talking to Diane Rehm, relax a little!
"By the way, nobody discussed the irony of John Sununu, as a person of middle eastern descent, being the point raptor on this silly unamerican diatribe"
Obama is un- American, for president to reject free market capitalism is as un- American as you can get.
"I spent the last years of high school in a daze, drank beer heavily and tried drugs enthusiastically."
I think it would have been very interesting to have had the guests in the second hour of the "Spy the Lie" segment to have been in the studio to give their observations of what Rickie Rubio said on during Diane's show.

What do you think gary k was looking at and commenting on when he made the statement below? The color of his skin in the picture used for the show, DA! you can lead a horse to water but you can't make em drink.

partisan politics,
Obama literally rescued the free market.......in similar style to Sec. Paulsen with TARP.....GM and Chrysler are as American as hot dogs, baseball, apple pie, and Chevrolet.......those of us in the midwest are very happy that our free market auto industry is alive and surging. Backing startup alternative energy small companies is all about our yankee trader tradition. NO market is ever free to rip apart the very people it depends on as customers. Those toadies and sycophants who suck up to the 1%ers are the real unamericans since they favor money over citizenship.......outsourcing over fellow americans......bullying over fair play.
And get off the race crap......it's a loser for you and the fellow bigots who hope to trade on ethnic fears and prejudices.
I guess it was OK for W to be an alcoholic and coke devotee in his "youth"........according to your repeated references to O's admissions.
As someone famous once said, Take off your mask.....Halloween is over.

To prevent the left from destroying our country, obviously.
Of course, 50 years of the liberals and democrats infiltrating government and academia is having its effect, and it will take awhile to kill the parasite, so to speak, if it can be done at all.
But, if the libs cannot actually be rendered impotent, the next best thing is a locked-up federal government.
I hope the deadlock continues forever. It has been my experience that you cannot negotiate with the libs.
IF the Republicans gain control this election, they should use the power of the purse to throttle the libs and democrats.

The TARP funds were illegally used to save union jobs, it is not the "free market" for the government to bail any business out. Man your ignorant.

No way, I am going to push this racist race baiting democrat sewage back down your own throats.
marco rubio is a fast-talking, self-contradicting sunovabitch
slippery is right.
Today's comments are among the most shrill, unabashedly racist, and hateful that I have ever witnessed on this board. Good thing the left wants cooperation and political compromise, not obstructionism.

Really? I thought he was well prepared and handled himself really well in reaction to a partisan inquisitor fronting for the left.
Funny how different folks hear different things. I suppose this phenomenon is why NPR thinks they are not biased, when in reality every one of their female radio personalities sound like dyed-in-the-wool liberals.
The only person on NPR that has any stature is Robert Siegel.
How misleading can you get? Why why doesn't anyone with a finance or tax background ever challenge his ridiculous assertion that a TShirt shop owner definitely will have a tax increase??? If T Shirt shops could universally or on average deliver over $250,000 in NET revenues after expenses before taxes (which is what a Sub S adds to the individual tax return it would be the # 1 chosen profession in America. He is just scaring people by not distinguishing between GROSS RECEIPTS and TAXABLE INCOME. He also added SS taxes etc. that is not an apples to apple comparison.
