Senator Marco Rubio

Senator Marco Rubio

Sen. Marco Rubio served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate on the 2012 Republican ticket. Rubio talks about his Cuban heritage, his political ambitions and his ideas for making America better.

Sen. Marco Rubio has been called the political equivalent of a rock star. The son of Cuban immigrants, he has risen farther faster than just about any other Latino in American politics. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for eight years and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 at age 39. His name has been one of a handful frequently mentioned as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney. But his tough stance on immigration has made him few friends among U.S. Hispanics. In a new memoir, Sen. Rubio writes about his political ambitions and mistakes – and his ideas for America's future.

From The Studio

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) addressed what he takes into consideration when making decisions, including what he would consider if presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney chooses Rubio to be his running mate. The nation’s largest Tea Party group endorsed Rubio as its pick for vice president Wednesday. Rubio said he agrees with the tea party movement's concern that the U.S. government is overstepping its constitutional mandate. "I think one of the most unfair things that's emerged in American politics over the last couple of years is this definition of the tea party as an outside-the-mainstream movement," Rubio said.

As a Latina woman I am so glad that Senator Rubio has become a Senator, but please do not think for one minute that he represents the Latino community, or who we are. He, like many of us benefited from the laws that he wants to change and the ones that need changing to help young Latinos, he is not supporting. Also, his "career sacrifices" are nothing new to millions and millions of Americans, specially women, who are making those same choices every day. Family come first to many of us. I think his mentioning of it was a way to get recognition for something that is normal. To me, he is just another inexperienced, arrogant politician.

Mr. Rubio obfuscates, as per Republican wont. Every business has operations expense, basic deductions from revenue to arrive at taxable income. Thus, a business with $200K revenues would have far less taxable income and be immune to the tax breaks that the Democrats wish to sunset.

It seems to me that this point needs to be made in the public discussion on a regular basis to fend off such mis-information in the future.

Sen. Mario Rubio -- a profile in porridge.

Best hour of the Diane Rhem show I have ever heard. It's wonderful treat to hear the Republican side of things. Thank you!

I hope Senator Rubio is president one day.

Diane was out of her league, though she certainly tried tried to goad him with the usual liberal lies. Mr. Rubio more than held his own. Why doesn't Diane treat her leftist/lib guests in this aggressive manner?

I agree with his opinion regarding cutting taxpayer funding for NPR - they are a Democrat media tool, let the Democrats pay for them.

This guy is just the guy we need to help crush the left.

This is hilarious.

Yeah, Rubio believes immigration is important to this country, believes in immigration, believes in "the American Dream", yada, yada, yada... Never mentioned is the fact that Cubans enjoy an "elite" status as immigrants, all you have to do is show up, you're in! Everybody else, get in line, or better yet, according to the Tea Partiers that support him, get out, we'll call you. The Cuban "exile" community has held hostage better relations with Cuba for decades, and you better not cross them. Bad things might happen. Why do we have the relationship we do with every other "communist" country in the world, but treat Cuba differently? Our trade, diplomatic, and cultural relationships with these other countries has changed the world, but we are going to treat Cuba the same way we did in 1960? This is an absurd form or reality, that we kowtow to this small community of immigrants, but no politician in Florida can be elected without doing so.

This discussion was entertaining to listen to. There were too many duplicate questions asked of the Senator, that he reasonably answered over and over again (which was a waste of precious time) without changing his answer or the professional manner in which he addressed the discussion simply to appease Diane's majority liberal audience. Good for the Senator. May God bless America.

Totally agree with the CPA above.

I would like to have known how Marco Rubio felt about Gabby Giffords. Marco Rubio has had a leadership position with the republican secret team, the Plumbers of old Watergate infamy, since before the Giffords shooting. Has Rubio been contacted by the FBI yet about his team's drugging and programming of the assassin to attack the Congresswoman?

Ya got to admire the lying machinery of the T-Party.. The Bush tax cut was signed into law in June 2001. By August, just 2 months later we were thrown into the first Bush recession. The Budget Surplus GONE,and the Treasury Secretary asking to increase the National Debt....

The second Bush recession came in 2005.

The "Great Bush Recession" nearly threw us into a new Global Depression........

And Rubio`s T-Party call that successful economics, and the economics Obama doesn`t understand.

Am a regular listener and fan but you blew it with the "I am older and I know" comment about McCarthyism. First, he is right, one critical letter from someone is hardly a movement. What the heck did you expect him to do other than express disapproval and move on? Second, if we want to get picky about the whole validity of that type of argument, a kind of reverse ad hominem tactic, "I was there, I know better"; you were only age 14-18 during the McCarthy Era. Hardly an age of wisdom and awareness. I am only 60, not 75, of course, so know nothing of that era.

Should we now all go on a tirade about Diane Rehm's total lack of credibility because all of her arguments are grounded on "I was there and you weren't" ? I think that would be ridiculous too.

July 19, 2012 - 11:13 am

Here, Here! I completely agree with eveything you stated! Horray for Senator Rubio, he's a straight shooter! Period!

July 19, 2012 - 11:13 am

I have listened to the Diane Rehm Show for a very long time. I do not remember an occasion when I have felt so embarrassed for Diane Rehm.

Marco Rubio seems to share the certainty of the Tea Party that they have a sure path to the Truth. He bevaved very badly, challenging the host in a pugnacious manner which does not become a Senator in the US Senate. If I had been in Diane's place I would have ended the interview at the first signs of such behaviour and sent him packing. Her patience made Job look restless! Rubio is just another bully with a motor-mouth.

He is clearly a loose cannon who will never be considered either as a real vice presidental candidate or as president.

July 19, 2012 - 11:23 am

Hearing Diane Rehm stand up to power today in the form of Senator Rubio deeply confirmed my long time support of Public radio.

The culture of politics is to push for your own narrow agenda and then lie slickly about it. Fortunately for the public Senator Rubio isn't very slick;his anger and ruffled ego showed rght through under Diane's relentless questioning. How I admire her. I also came away from the program committed to defeating the party that would consider Senator Rubio for office.

July 19, 2012 - 11:17 am

Well Diane, you more than met your match today. Couldn't nail Sen.Rubio, could you? You sure gave it a good try though.
I think it's about time that NPR, which is consistently a cheering section for the Obama administration, gave an opportunity for an intelligent and articulate spokesperson for sound conservative thinking and policy in government to be heard by its audience, even though I fear it will fall largely on deaf ears.

July 19, 2012 - 11:20 am

Diane,
Please listen to the program----you will hear yourself being very less-than-cordial (I am being kind here) to Rubio compared to your other guests---he so out-classed you in manners, which surprised me greatly as you are usually mannerly---but not this time...methinks your agenda showed---we'd have to have a room-temperature IQ not to notice it.

July 19, 2012 - 11:20 am

Two things I found ironic:
1. He says, "I have 300 or so stations on my satellite radio." The average American does not have the means to purchase these stations. In a time when so many are struggling this is just a luxury many of us cannot afford. Clearly, Senator Rubio is out of touch with the everyday American, as is the Republican party.

2. He believes that the United States history of immigration is one of compassion and so it should be; however, only in the case of Cubans fleeing the rule of Castro. What about the impoverished Mexican people who are being subjected to the violent landscape of an American fueled drug cartel war?? No?? Were not showing them compassion? These people cannot afford the cost of legal immigration and frankly they cannot afford the wait. Their sons, husbands, and daughters are being killed, forced into the cartel or murdered, kidnapped, raped, and there is no compassion shown here? Which is it Senator Rubio? We, the United States of America, are directly responsible for that mess, yet we bury our heads in the sand.

July 19, 2012 - 11:25 am

I can't believe that Diane let him get away with the comment that a t-shirt shop with $250,000 in REVENUE will have an increase in taxes under the reversion from the Bush tax cuts in January. The hightest rate only applies to any PROFIT that is above $250,000. I'd like to see that t-shirt shop that turns over a quarter million in profit. How are we supposed to have a reasoned debate on this issue when the Senator either is ignorant of this or is deliberately misrepresenting the facts?

July 19, 2012 - 11:27 am

I totally agree with Kathy Wimberly. I love the show and try to listen regularly but Diane and 90% of her guest are leaning more and more to the left. Now, at last, an intelligent, articulate conservative is on the show and all the comments are about whether he is white or spanish or what.
Perhaps putting on a liberal with him would have made him look even better. I hope that he is Romney's pick.

July 19, 2012 - 11:29 am

Marco Rubio conveniently mingled "revenue" with "personal income" when talking about small business owners and his example of $200,000.

If you have a business that takes in $200,000, your tax will not rise to 40%. There are many tax deductions for revenue of small businesses and in fact most are not heavily taxed.

It is only when you have taken home $250,000 in personal income that you will have to pay an increase in tax. These people will continue to invest in their profitable businesses whether they pay 35% or 40% of their personal income. Lets all do our part.

July 19, 2012 - 11:30 am

Diane Rehm and NPR came across today as what they really are - another media arm of the Democrats.

Rubio kicked butt. I don't blame him for eventually getting annoyed by Diane repeating the same questions over and over.

Sometimes the Grandma mask slips, and the partisan liberal harridan below comes into focus

Anyone who listens to NPR, well, anyone who isn't a typical liberal listener, knows that in an election year it's time for NPR to increase their already obvious support for the Democrats

July 19, 2012 - 11:31 am

Quoting Rubio, "A million people come to this country every year" (U.S.) The number of visas, refugees, and legal and illegal immigrants have an economic and human impact on legal citizens or residents of the United States. I wonder why no one writes or talks about it in broadcasting and print media.

July 19, 2012 - 11:32 am

I think it's about time that NPR, which is consistently a cheering section for the Obama administration, gave the opportunity for an intelligent and articulate spokesperson for sound conservative thinking and policy in government to be heard by its audience, even though I fear Sen.Rubio's words fell largely on deaf ears.

July 19, 2012 - 11:33 am

Sen. Rubio seems very willing to disenfranchise legal voters in his zeal to stop voter fraud. I would be interested in knowing how many legal voters is it OK to keep from voting in order to catch one fraudulent voter? Voter fraud is a made up issue by the GOP so they can justify purging legal voters who don't vote they way the GOP wants them to vote. I want to know when we are going to get our democracy back - when are we going to have a bigger commitment to democratic process than to power grabs by those powerful enough to circumvent rules and ethics?

parsonspass wrote:"...methinks your agenda showed---we'd have to have a room-temperature IQ not to notice it."

That's what was so refreshing. Like Obama not being a "socialist", his comments on entrepreneurs not being self made could not have made it more clear.

July 19, 2012 - 11:36 am

So how come GE paid NO tax but small businesses have so much tax, Senator Rubio? Business owners are not taxed on the profit of their small business but on what salary they give themselves out of that small business. And, why are investors still paying only 15% tax on investment income when work income is still taxed at marginal rates? Mitt Romney will never see a 40% tax on his money.

July 19, 2012 - 11:37 am

Diane definitely met more than her match today.

July 19, 2012 - 11:38 am

Diane was absolutely right to call Senator Rubio on his ignorance of the McCarthy era. It was a terribly frightening and shameful time in our nation's history. And all these campaigns to destroy others starts with one comment that not enough people bother to repudiate. Too bad so few Americans bother to learn even the basics about U.S. history.

July 19, 2012 - 11:43 am

As much as I abhor what the Republican US Congresses 1995-2006 did to this country, I find your interview with a potential Vice-president of these here United States less than professional, Diane. Your incessant attempts at "gotcha" ensures another vote to defund NPR.
If I was Senator Rubio, I sure wouldn't want to be on your program again.
