Senator Marco Rubio
Sen. Marco Rubio has been called the political equivalent of a rock star. The son of Cuban immigrants, he has risen farther faster than just about any other Latino in American politics. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for eight years and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 at age 39. His name has been one of a handful frequently mentioned as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney. But his tough stance on immigration has made him few friends among U.S. Hispanics. In a new memoir, Sen. Rubio writes about his political ambitions and mistakes – and his ideas for America's future.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) addressed what he takes into consideration when making decisions, including what he would consider if presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney chooses Rubio to be his running mate. The nation’s largest Tea Party group endorsed Rubio as its pick for vice president Wednesday. Rubio said he agrees with the tea party movement's concern that the U.S. government is overstepping its constitutional mandate. "I think one of the most unfair things that's emerged in American politics over the last couple of years is this definition of the tea party as an outside-the-mainstream movement," Rubio said.

Here we go again. Another T-Partier who went to a Public High School, and a publicly financed Community College, who is now going to inform us of the EVIL of our government. I thought I saw a Rubio speech where he thanked Medicare for saving his Mom`s life. Oh well,it`s normal coming from the ELITE. Especially the Miami Cuban Community, who enjoys 'wet foot dry foot'. A Community that forgets the bigotry the T-Party supports against all other Latino`s. There are many people`s of Central and South American countries who are far more politically oppressed and dead as a result of the Fascist Dictators the U.S. has installed.Far more brutal than the plight of the Cuban`s who fled Castro`s Cuba.Where is the Cuban outrage?
While his family may have been from Cuba, he is definitely not your typical Cuban. He is obviously far more Spanish than Cuban. And anyone who knows anything about Spain's history knows that Spain and the "superior" and "repressive" attitude it brought to the New World has been the root cause of all of Latin America's problems. He is far more representative of the original Spanish mindset in the 16th Century.
As Dr. J. Rufus Fears of the University of Oklahoma has stated, power is the universal value; not freedom. And Spain was one of the most repressive examples of it. Rubio represents the elite classes who brutally ruled (and largely still rule) all the areas to the south of the USA. But isn't this the same repressive attitude which is currently surging in the USA? Indeed, in the whole world?

I wonder who this description fits that we know of today, right now in the white house? I'll give you one guess.
"I spent the last years of high school in a daze, drank beer heavily and tried drugs enthusiastically."

You mean he is WHITE ! it looks like the KKK racist roots of the democrat party are far from dead, in fact they have only evolved into something just as bad, a race baiting bludgeon to be used against anyone who disagrees with them.

Where in the world did you come up with this one. Spanish people are white? Not that I spend any time at all trying to classify people according to their skin color, but being forced to do just that, I would put them into the Spanish category for whatever that means.

Spanish, Italians and Greeks are white-they have the same dna haplogroups that are found all over Europe.
Spanish, Italians and Greeks are white-they have the same dna haplogroups that are found all over Europe.
I find it very telling that you know this.
Here's a question for the Senator. Knowing that the Vice President is often tasked with international responsibilities, what background would you expect the next VP to have? A degree in international relations? Years of experience outside the country learning about other cultures? What?
Mike Sergeant wrote:"I find it very telling that you know this."
Telling what?
are you race baiting ?
I am in agreement partisan politics that Latinos are genetically white. You can't argue with the DNA. Also, I watched a news show a few years back where a representative from La Raza stated that Latinos were genetically white.
"are you race baiting ?"
I'm not the one who brought race into this nor do I know all the subtleties about what makes one white as you seem to. I believe that the original comment was about Marco Rubio's ethnic background not race. YOU were the one who brought up race with your "You mean he's WHITE" statement.
There is a difference between ethnic background and race. For example, my ethnic background is English, my race is White, or my ethnic background is Hutu, my race is Black. Can you see the difference?
Please ask Senator Rubio what he thinks of the GOP / Romney campaign's current tactic of trying to brand President Obama as "foreign".
I'd bet good money that Rubio has voted to de-fund public broadcasting (with the exception of Radio Marti).
But he's more than willing to use it to hawk his book.
Similarly, he was a gung-ho supporter of the Iraq war at a time when he was a perfect age to volunteer for military service. Instead he served his country by spreading his ego all over Florida as Speaker of the House.
Please have Sen. Rubio comment on McCain's support of Huma Abedin, and if he thinks there is justification for Michelle Bachman's accusations against Abedin.
Please the Senator how can he in good conscience take up the flag of the Tea Party when members of such group openly advocate the creation of concentration camps for latinos?
Diane, Diane, Diane,...
You won't get a straight answer from Rubio. He'll spin you, lie, and say anything that advances the T-Party / Koch Brothers agenda.
There is not an equivalency between GOPer obstructionism and Democratic attempts to move our country forward.
Rubio is attacking our president for implementing his ideas via executive order when GOP House & GOP filibuster would stop it dead. Rubio doesn't care about immigrants. He just wants an issue to attack Democrats.
Stop the "wet foot / dry foot" policy now and make Cubans follow the same immigration laws everyone else is expected to follow.
Now, Rubio's defending Arizona's "Show Me Your Papers" law. What a slimy piece of garbage.
Let's purge the voter rolls says Rubio. He doesn't care how many actual voters get purged from the voter rolls as long as one fraudulent voter is removed. We'll disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters to get one fraudulent voter because most of those disenfranchised are Democrats!
He's innocent of campaign finance problems. That's just a lie, but when a Democrat is accused, they must be guilty because they're Democrats.
Just for fun, ask Rubio about the Koch brothers father, Fred, founding the John Birch Society.

Since Marco Rubio and his family are from Cuba and not from Spain and the original comment on this made a distinction between Cubans and Spanish, "typical Cuban" and "more Spanish than Cuban" the race implications are obvious. Wake up!

Diane - I am sorely disappointed in your decision to welcome one partisan Senator as your sole guest. This hour is so different from your normally balanced presentations from which I learn so much. I am willing to listen and learn from politicians from both parties if I am allowed to listen to both sides of the issue. I am not happy to do this, but I am turning your program off. R. Mayros
A couple of months ago I attended the HNBA - Hispanic National Bar Association, and Marco Rubio is a four letter word. Almost everyone there, even Cuban Americans, hate the fact that he tries to tell a storyline that somehow his life story is that of latino emigrant. They hate the fact that he ignores all the racist and xenophobe positions of the Republican party. They hate how he, after benefiting from government programs and a preferential immigration policy, he now he is trying to close the door for others.
Rubio keeps talking about his book. Is this interview a vehicle for Rubio to schlep his autobio? So far Rubio keeps pandering his partisan politics and blaming Dems for everything.
Im turning you off before I become sick.....
what a weas...
Florida..... The State that doesn`t count the votes is worried about voter fraud? Sure you are.
wow. this guy is a JERK.
He comes off as backtracking, fast talking, defensive, condisending, disrespectful dime a dozen politician.
Senator Rubio is a great example of an articulate communicator. Senator Rubio, please set a good example and use "me"" rather than "I" correctly when it is an object.
Example:
My mother drove my sister and me to school.
Best way to illustrate this rule : remove " my sister and". You wouldn't say "my mother drove I to school".
Thank you!
Rubio says the disclosure laws should be changed, but he refuses to criticize the GOPers for blocking the DISCLOSE Act.
Are you going to point out that your second guest, Senator John Warner is a GOPer, not a Democrat. -- Great balance to your program Diane. What a joke.
I think Sen. Rubio is very naive to believe that there will be no racial profiling in Arizona because its forbidden in the law. Does he seriously believe that they will check the caucasian.
He says nice things but his actions are highly contradictory. Will accept NO voter fraud, "not one person" but will accept any level of corporate fraud-Pay a fine and do what you want corporations! He wants to get government out of our lives to create a vacuum for corporate America to fill. No Obamacare but OK to have American workers health tied to their jobs (for those lucky enough to have a health care plan at work- for the rest, too bad). He sees the struggle of parents and families but no legislation/work around improved work/family balance/laws. Pro-life but capital punichment, war, letting peopl die b/c they lack healthcare, that's OK! He is a well-spoken hypocrite like nearly all Republicans...don't need tax returns from Mitt Romney but we should trust him with our lives and our future....on and on and on....and they call themselves Christians. It's shameful.
This interview is going great, you can tell this by the shrill nonsensical responses on this comment board.
Most americans might not be aware of this, but Hispanoamerica can be described as a "pigmentocracy." Race, more so than wealth, determines your position in society. Marco Rubio (whose last name means "blond") would be considered of Spanish descent, and thus automatically be given preferential treatment throughout LatAm. On the other hand, someone like Charlie Rangel or Sammy Sossa would not be afforded the same treatment.
Unfortunately this caste system is still present in the latino immigrant community. Spanish criollos have benefits over mulatos, zambos, or indigenous people.
In addition to this, Cuban American have tremendous advantages over other latin immigrants. Evey wonder why the LatAm elite in the US is dominated by cubans? They not only automatically have papers when they arrive, but they have a huge support network that ensures their well being (as long as they are anti-castro). Additionally they tend to be better educated than the rest.
Diane, Diane, I'm sad to hear you act so hostile to a guest. A friend recently told me he thought you were very partisan towards Democrats, and I disagreed. But now you are making me eat my words. If you have so little respect for Mr. Rubio, what is the point of having him on the show?
Apparently you missed the bit about ethnic background and race. "Typical Cuban" is an ethnic background statement. "More Spanish than Cuban" is an ethnic statement. If the statement was something along the line of "He is more white than hispanic" then there is a discussion of race.
The race implications were not obvious until you pointed them out and began to look for the conspiracy. The ethnic implications were obvious.
