Friday News Roundup - Domestic
The U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the first quarter. Mitt Romney clinched the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday with a win in the Texas primary. A jury found former Sen. John Edwards not guilty on one count against him and the judge declared a mistrial on the others. A judge declared a mistrial on five counts in former Sen. John Edwards' corruption case. National Journal congressional correspondent Major Garrett called the jury "nothing if not diligent." He said it's likely the government will accept the outcome and not try Edwards in court again. Fox News political analyst Juan Williams said Edwards was supposed to be the future John F. Kennedy of the Democratic Party, but now "is so laden with baggage."

The Fascist Nazi`s used to call their propaganda machine the PROPAGANDA MINISTRY. Today the PROPAGANDA NETWORK on Fox News call themselves "Fair and Balanced".It would seem even the Nazi`s had more honor. The 4+ minute pro Romney, anti Obama ad run for free this week, eliminated any doubt of Fox News bias.
Oh, Patsy. Poll after poll shows that 1) Fox News is PERCEIVED as more fair by the public (and their ratings prove it) and 2) studies show (I can find at least three of them for you if you like) that story content IS more fair and balanced on Fox News. For example, ONLY ONE network reported the House vote on genocide within the unborn female population. The other networks COMBINED - ZERO stories. Where is NOW on that by the way?
Your problem is, the propaganda machine of the MSM (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN) have had free reign for so long, you don't know what fair and balanced looks like.
Can't you see, Patsy is a deliberate "patsy". An obvious plant to make republicans look good by making liberal democrats look so psychopathic.
We do not need Fox News or Mitt Romney to indict the failure of President Obama's economic policies. Today's job numbers do that all by themselves. Diane, will your panel talk about that?
So if you like the Big Lies on Fox you'll also love three out of four posts by the same compensated author with various macho-sounding names at DRShow. (I asked my dentist to please change her waiting room TV off Fox News. She says her financial adviser has told her Fox watching will instill anxiety in her patients that will make them pay more promptly. We both laughed nervously. After my cleaning I changed dentists.)
Here in Ohio the T-Party eliminated the 'Estate Tax'. To pay for this the State is cutting funding to public schools. In response the local schools are cutting teachers. Just 1 example,of many corrupt policies benefiting the 1% ONLY.
NO MENTION ON FOX NEWS.
In the United States, our largest employer, home of the 'Iconic Greeter",has laid off those 'Greeters'. This selfish, greedy family,is very public in it`s funding of Republicans. A "Job Creator",who begs and begs for more tax breaks. They are getting the tax breaks,so where are the jobs? "JOB CREATORS",not hardly.
NO MENTION ANYWHERE,NEVER ON FOX.
George W.Bush convicted of 'War Crimes' in absentia.
NO MENTION ON FOX NEWS.
Did you hear what just happened? A right wing guest uttered a blatant falsehood, claiming that the Fed has "done about all that it can do" and thus ignoring the Fed's "dual mandate" to promote price stability AND full employment.
But did you hear Diane Rehm challenge it?
Nope.
It skated right by.
Akron Public Schools will lay off about 110 employees, including 84 teachers, to save about $6.3 million a year.
The district will cut about another $3.7 million a year in supplies and transportation for a combined $10 million annual savings.
Every city in Ohio is cutting jobs. Why? To pay for tax breaks and the resulting budget gaps. From what I read,Ohio is NOT unique.
Job Craters are now mostly in the financial realm of global riverboat gambling. Most economic growth is in financial services which is most of our balloon economy. No worries if you lose because Dr. Congress will get right in there with a free prescription. How can those without money "be responsible." They weren't responsible for the Austerity Shakedown in the first place. The USA is being wrung out like a sponge. Gas and debt (both toxic) are squirting in all directions.
These 3 habitual aristoflak panelists seem to speak from a financialist POV.
They get information from tracking their wagers.
I wonder why nobody calls the Republicans on the oppositional statements of "If I'm elected, my administration will create 'X' million jobs" and "Government has never created a job". I hear both coming from the presumed Republican candidate. Only one can be true, which one?
When Republicans say "voter fraud" they mean that black or Hispanic or poor people have voted. Between 1865 and 1965, we didn't have these problems -- these folks were prevented from voting and polluting the pool of voters. Rick Scott, Scott Walker, etc, are working hard to bring America back to this "better" time in American history.
If congress isn't going to get anything done until after the election they need to go home and not get paid until November. Right now they're sitting around wasting taxpayer money on pointless votes like the one on which animal should be our national mammal.
Is a magic switch for job creation a possibility? No, the riddance of Obama from the political scene would definitely lift an uneasy feeling from the economic situation. I know I have an overwhelming feeling something is terribly wrong in the white house. It's not a partisan thing, it's a situation where we have leadership that truly hates the American way. I suspect the business community as a whole agrees with this assessment.
Will- The FED pulled 14 trillion plus in electronic money out its butt to save its TBTF members. Maybe that's its only mission. No one knows how much "green slime" it has showered on the Eurozone. We outta flip this Monopoly board and start the game over. (Diane doesn't comprehend global finance. It's not her fault she is in above her depth.)
I am no conspiracy theorist but I am starting to think that Congress and businesses are holding off on jobs so Obama will fail! Also since congress is not going to do anything in the lame duck send the bums home and take away their goverment healthcare! They are not working on our behalf! They have one agenda to takethe President down the heck with AmerIcan people!
Given that 69,000 jobs (more or less) were created last month, what is the panel’s estimate of the number of college graduates that will be entering the work force this month? How does that comparison work for the same period last year? The year before?
A snippet from the BLS report [http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm]:
"The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) rose from 5.1
to 5.4 million in May. These individuals accounted for 42.8 percent of the unemployed."
How can ANYONE refer to what we are continuing to experience as a "recovery"?
Yes, there are a subset of metrics that show a feeble growth, but these relate only to a shrinking number of companies that are cutting expenses (people) fast enough to stay ahead of our shrinking economy.
And when I refer to "our shrinking economy", I am referring to the per capita perspective, not some wink-and-nod view that excludes the millions who are without jobs.
Neither party has a clue about how to turn this around. Most of the people in DC have no idea how the nation is running outside the beltway.
Regarding the Republican-initiated voter purge in Florida, it's EXACTLY what everyone thinks: an attempt to intimidate and remove Democrats from the voting roles. How do I know? Because for five years, after my father--a registered Republican--died, I attempted to have my local (Republican) supervisor of elections remove him from the voter roles. After his renewed voter card showed up at the house for the first election after his death, I submitted a certified death certificate to the supervisor of elections along with a brief letter asking that his name be removed. It never happened, despite contact the office in each of the following four years. My father is STILL registered to vote. However, my neighbor, a Cuban immigrant who has had citizenship since the mid-70s and served in Vietnam, got a letter questioning his eligibility to vote. He's a Democrat.
Right wing authoritarianism could put everyone "to work" overnight.
They just wouldn't get a living wage or benefits, or any human rights in the workplace.
Pay not jobs is the issue for more than half of the American workforce.
If the FED can throw money at the already superwealthy without guilt; then why not give every poor citizen a stipend. Boy would "the economy" ever take off!
Tish, recall that when Obama last engaged in the phony deficit ceiling negotiations, he opened up with a reduction ($4 trillion) that was far more than the republicans were willing to accept.
In any event, negotiating or compromise was not in the republican game plan, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the American economy or people, only in removing Obama from office. His policies have been as damaging as any the idiot republicans would have foisted upon us.
The businesses are holding off because they see the apocalypse approaching, and a hefty cash balance is the safest way for the CEOs to look good and continue to collect ginormous compensation. There is nothing in their machinations that is political, only greedy. When they think a bottom is at hand, you'll see these vast stockpiles of cash put to work buying up other companies ... which will result in even more people hitting the streets as redundancies are eliminated.
What happens next is anyone's guess.
President Obama's campaign slogan is "Forward" all the while looking back at Romney's past. When will President Obama talk honestly about his administrations shortcomings.....no one held accountable for the sub prime fraud etc.

Juan Williams, regarding the difference between Edwards and Clinton.
Clinton does not still get a lot of love from me or many that I know. I voted for him but would campaign against him today. During the Lewinsky circus my 6 year old came home and asked me what oral sex was. Hard to break down for her. A year later, it became a lunch time fad at the local middle school.
How can we teach our children to respect and aspire to the office when it's salient goal seems to be a way to get groupies for adulterous hook-ups?
Is it any wonder where the culture of the Secret Service comes from? The president would be better guarded by his better angels. They would be more effective than hung-over agents and would cost the taxpayer a lot less.

The DNC's slow movement to get involved in the Wisconsin recall could end up being similar to the Brown elected in Massachusetts fiasco. The DNC has blown it
So good to hear Juan on NPR; thanks for being there Juan, and thanks for inviting him Diane.
kathleen: The excuse that detangling the financial coup will unravel the global economy has come true. I'd get the scissors. They're spoiling the yarn faster than the People can spin it.
The Wisconsin DNC truce proves there is only one major political party: The Warmongering Financial Duopoly. (Now if you were an Oligarch would you allow your contributions to be wasted on fire fighters and teachers?)
Juan is wrong about Edwards IMHO. Did woman voters abandon Ted Kennedy or Bill Clinton? If anything they came back to them stronger than ever. Women will forgive almost anything if a guy has looks and money or fame.
YEAH, Diane - yes! CEOs do need to be answerable to more than just their stockholders. This is an absolutely pivotal point in the financial state we find ourselves in. The question is how to bring this idea into mainstream thinking. It is vital to change the balance of benefiting from profits and accepting risks to a shared responsibility of stockholders, employees, CEOs and needs of company to maintain healthy growth.

While it was no secret that CBS News' Uncle Walter, "the most trusted man in America," was a liberal, Douglas Brinkley’s new bio reveals Cronkite was not only on the far left, but his unethical behavior trumped CBS News' Dan Rather's.
"Cronkite blatantly manipulated an interview with LBJ shortly before Johnson died. According to Brinkley, his producer spliced the footage in unflattering ways, reshooting Cronkite asking the questions so it appeared that he was nodding or raising his eyebrows in disgust when Johnson talked about Vietnam. LBJ saw a rough cut and pronounced it “dirty pool”; I would call it a video version of lying. Under pressure from the former president’s team, CBS undid the misleading editing, so the public never learned of the deception."
