Friday News Roundup - International

Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande was elected president of France; the CIA said a Saudi double-agent was used to disrupt an al-Qaida bomb plot that would have targeted a U.S.-bound airliner; and two suicide car bombers killed 55 people and wounded 372 in Damascus, Syria, casting doubt on the U.N. mission there. David Sanger of The New York Times, Susan Glasser of Foreign Policy magazine and Matt Frei of the U.K's Channel 4 News join Diane for analysis of the week's top international news stories.

Twin bombs in Syria’s capital killed dozens and wounded hundreds of people. U.N. leader Ban Ki Moon warned Syria has only a brief window to avoid civil war. France and Greece voted for socialists in an anti-austerity backlash. Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel continued to defend austerity measures as Europe’s only hope in the debt crisis. The CIA and Saudis infiltrated al Qaeda, foiling a bomb against a U.S. bound plane. And Russians protested as Vladimir Putin assumed the presidency again. David Sanger of The New York Times, Susan Glasser of Foreign Policy magazine and Matt Frei of the U.K's Channel 4 News join Diane for analysis of the week's top international news stories.

Re: Russian plane crash; I've worked in the aviation industry, both military and for several airlines and can assure you that no one in the business is surprised by the plane crashing into the side of a volcano. The Russians and the Soviets before them make the worst aviation products on the planet, no quality control to speak of, the workers don't care and push out anything to meet the quota or schedule. This is an aviation industry in crisis and given the choice I would never ever fly on one of their planes and would be terrified to fly in thier airspace.

Why is all of this sensitive information coming out and being published? Whoever first published the fact that this person was a double agent endangered his life and the lives of all his contacts as well as anyone who helped along the way. Yes, it may cause some paranoia among AQAP, but a lot of innocent people are going to be hurt & killed.

Then there's the information about Britain's connection to all this. If the British didn't want their involvement revealed, why was it revealed?

Where is the media getting all of this information? Who has the "loose lips"? Is it the administration or the Pentagon that is divulging all of this?

Does anyone else have a problem with the perfect timing of this latest underwear bomber? It is being strongly promoted as evidence that we need to maintain our fear of terrorism and funding of anti-terrorism Patriot Act functions. Then we find that the so-called "bomber" was one of ours... Not that Al qeda is not culpable, but it smells like a sting which is being used for political leverage in the States.

I'd like to hear some discussion of recent events in Mali, the nation in West Africa that has suffered a coup d'etat and an explosion of radical Islamicist activity in its northern regions. The famous city of Timbuktu is now under sharia law, with Al-Quaeda offshoots destroying holy sites and causing a huge refugee crisis as people from throughout the area flee the violence.
Thank you,

The answer to your question is; The War on Terrorism is a psychological operation on the American people. The US Government placed the underwear bomber on the plane in 2009! Read the account of a Michigan attorney, Kurt Haskell http://www.lewrockwell.com/pr/haskell-truth-flight253.html
Also look at the move The Village and you will understand that the powers to be need a form of a threat to control the masses!

To Michael David writing on May 12, 2012 @ 4:24 pm:

Right, I’m supposed to blindly trust a piece on the lewrockwell.com website? You know, the same site that’s condemned Lincoln, and argues we should have stayed out of World War II.

Also, interestingly, while the article in question is filled with speculation (and leaps in “logic”) it starts with a disclaimer which kind of destroys what you’re trying to insinuate:

“Please note that in the article that follows, I am not claiming that the U.S. Government knew Mutallab had a bomb or intended to hurt anyone on Flight 253 when the U.S. Government let him board.” [Emphasis added.]
