Friday News Roundup - International

The U.S. and Afghanistan reached a deal Sunday on a long-delayed strategic partnership agreement; Spain and the U.K. fell back into recession; and the U.N. said it will take a month to get the full 300-member observer mission on the ground in Syria. Yochi Dreazen of National Journal, Indira Lakshmanan of Bloomberg News and Stephan Richter of The Globalist join Diane for analysis of the week's top international news stories.

Budget cuts plunged the E. U. economy back into crisis. Britain slid into double-dip recession and Spain’s credit rating was downgraded for the second time this year. The Netherlands reached a budget deal just days after disputes over austerity led to government collapse. Pakistan said the U. S. is ignoring demands to stop drone activity. International monitors have moved to another hot spot in Syria to try to stop violence there. And former Liberian President Charles Taylor became the first head of state since World War II to be convicted by an international war crimes court. Yochi Dreazen of National Journal, Indira Lakshmanan of Bloomberg News and Stephan Richter of The Globalist join Diane for analysis of the week's top international news stories.

Rather than sending US trainers to Afghanistan, have we tried bringing Afghans to the West to be trained? I think there's a benefit to Afghans seeing that the West isn't evil, that while we aren't perfect there's a lot of benefits that the West has to offer. The Afghans would then take back, and hopefully spread, a more positive image of the West.

Why is it that the Obama administration can not or will not release numbers of how many innocent people have been killed by President Obama's drone program?

Sure wish you would have Dr. Marcy Wheeler on your program to discuss the drone killing issue

The Diane Rehm show has been lax in discussing the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Has disappeared from your show. Not even whispered about during your Friday international hours.
Almost a year ago last May in a speech before the State Department, Obama said that a peace deal would be based on the '67 borders. Israel reacted in anger. And ever since he's been retreating.

Israel has recently announced more expansion of illegal settlements. Israel is arresting Palestinians for mentioning the names of Palestinian villages wiped out by Israel. Please address the continued illegal actions of Israel

I totally disagree with the characterization that the Occupy protests "fizzled". They were suppressed. the police came in and used violence to destroy the camps and evict the protesters. If the police allowed the protesters to return, they would return instantly. To say they fizzled is simply untrue and I am shocked to hear you allow that kind of falsehood to stand unchallenged.

oh come on the only reason occupy was getting attention was because the MSM started giving them the time of day. Not that police across the nation have basically been successful at erasing many of the united actions of Occupy of course actions have been reduced. But just because the MSM is no longer giving the Occupy movements actions its as if they do not exist. Just like Diane and others not covering the anti invasion marches before the illegal invasion of Iraq took place. Millions of us were on the streets in New York, right in Diane's back yard in DC, and across the country. The crowds were made up of teachers, plumbers, students, Vets etc but those at home would have never known because the MSM barely gave these actions the time of day. Occupy has received far more coverage than the anti invasion efforts. The question is if the MSM is not covering actions does that mean they are not happenning? The answer is no. Just google Occupy Movement. Actions going on all over the stateshttp://occupyoakland.org/ http://occupyboulder.org/ http://occupywallst.org/ Hey what a concept maybe the Rehm show will cover the upcoming united occupy movement on May 1st. Doubt it but you never know

The MSM pundits and host think because they are not covering or aware of what is going on in the occupy movement that it does not exist. Absurd. Just the way they were absent during the anti invasion marches, protest, visits to Reps, arrest in the run up to the invasion of Iraq. They were absent so that meant that the accumulative numbers of Americans and people around the world protesting did not exist. They are delusional.

While the police clearing of activist has put a dent into actions. Actions all over the country continue to happen. Guess Diane and her team as well as the pundits on her program do not know how to google occupy oakland, occupy boulder, occupy La etc. Too bad. We continue to know why news coming from the internet, blogs, occupy sites are critical.

Who knows maybe the Rehm show will whisper about the upcoming united Occupy event coming up on May 1st. Hell Chris Hayes is even having some of the economic brainiacs from the Occupy movement on his show. Diane and her Rehm team might take notice.

Last Friday during the international hour Diane and her guest did not even whisper about how well the P5+1 talks went. Not a mention. Telling.

Not a mention on her show about ongoing expansion of Israeli illegal settlements. Thank goodness for the internet

Yoghi can you address the arrest of Palestinians who were arrested this week for reading out the names of Palestinians villages wiped before and during the creation of Israel? Can you address the continued expansion of illegal Israeli settlements? Why has the critical topic of the Israeli Palestinian conflict basically been absent from the Rehm show over the last 12 or so months?

The "occupy movement" despite the early glamorization by the liberal media, became transparent in it's depravity, violence, misguided and often times anti American message. Their day as something serious is long gone. It had nothing and offered even less.
