Friday News Roundup - Domestic

Rick Santorum ended his presidential campaign, shifting momentum to Mitt Romney in the GOP race; the Justice Department filed suit against Apple and several book publishers, charging the companies conspired to inflate the price of e-books; and George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin case. Jerry Seib of The Wall Street Journal, Jeanne Cummings of Bloomberg News, and John Harwood of CNBC join guest host Susan Page for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

The U. S. economic picture remains mixed. While the government reports a lower-than-expected trade deficit, weekly jobless claims hit a two month high. Apple denies accusations by the Justice Department it conspired with publishers to fix e-book prices. G. O. P. presidential hopeful Rick Santorum suspended his campaign this week, claiming he was out of cash. The fight for women voters heats up as the White House tries to distance itself from a Democratic strategist’s controversial comments about Ann Romney. The panelists discuss Democratic activist Hilary Rosen's comments earlier this week that Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life." Politicians and pundits from both sides of the aisle, including President and Mrs. Obama, defended Mrs. Romney against the criticism. Mrs. Romney has worked in the home as a stay-at-home mother of five children.

"Guess what? (Romney's) wife has actually never worked a day in her life."
Hilary Rosen about Ann Romney.

In a lame attempt to distance itself from Rosen's comments, The White House instructed Obama's campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt to claim that Rosen does not have a formal role on the president's reelection campaign. Melanie Roussell, a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, also said Rosen had no formal role at the organization.

oops!

I wonder if Diane's extended away mission has anything to do with the embarrassment she must feel about her irresponsible handling of the liberal medias deliberately distorted facts surrounding the Martin/Zimmerman case? You probably need a couple of months to live that down.

April 12, 2012 - 1:48 pm

Unions announce $400 million to reelect Obama. Not bad for an organization of forced dues, what more needs to be said!

April 12, 2012 - 10:59 pm

Well...DID Romney's wife ever work?

Rosen's comments were totally true and appropriate regarding whether Mrs. Romney knows what issues the "typical woman" is concerned about.

Maybe she read about it.

In this "gotcha" world people get flak for saying the truth.

It's MarcusTullius's comment that is "lame".

None of his "facts" matter.

This is paranoid baloney!

Why do right wingers defend Zimmerman?

Regardless of his motivations, he killed an unarmed kid & being charged with murder is entirely appropriate.

It's amazing to me that this has become a partisan issue.

Does "libertarians r us" believe that "liberty" entails the right to kill someone without consequences?

I do believe Mr. Zimmerman was convicted of murder with media lies on shows like this one. Do I believe that "liberty entails the right to kill someone without consequences?" Depending on the circumstance, YES!!! but this has nothing to do with the Zimmerman yet. I suspect he will not serve any time in jail from what I know, but unlike the liberal media I wouldn't put this out there in a news show.

Van wrote"It's amazing to me that this has become a partisan issue"

Liberal democrats once again made it one.

If you mean holding a job in the private sector, I don't think so. But this description pretty much fits Obama, so what is your point?

No way can the Romney`s relate to American`s who must endure T-Party shaming probes,in all these right wing States.Forced DNA probes, fingerprinting, drug tests(blood and urine),ultra-sounds,AND THE BIG ONE,THE VA JAY JAY RAM ROD. These insults are not for felons, but the unemployed, hungry, and pregnant.

No real war on women by the T-Party. A war on everybody, and women get their days.

So Mrs. Romney, tell us the last time you`ve been shamed ?

That means the circus has one less clown. But there are still plenty of clowns in the circus. And what the one-percenters define as work, the ninety-nine percenters would define as a sinecure.

April 13, 2012 - 9:15 am

Yes the Romneys are my contemporaries.....they own three homes worth over 22 million dollars ! They are just average folks like the rest of us. Mitt is perfectly able to identify with all of the problems facing Americans and his wife is a real sweetie....

Get real, Americans should throw every single millionaire out of public office...all of them.

April 13, 2012 - 9:17 am

Someone was attacked for having said something about Ms. Romney never having worked a day in her life. A second sentence followed. No pause.
I say, all good parents know how to stand-by and listen for elucidation on the part of their children. A second sentence, even a third, and the child goes ‘snap.’
Those employed outside the home have less time for elucidation with their off-spring. Known by all faiths, cultures, and species in the world, this tactic is understood without elucidation on the part of the community, if one has one. A look from a ‘friendly’ is helpful if the parent is ‘away’, but some are ‘offended’ to their very souls, if anyone ‘looks out’. They need to stay behind their pickets, and let the offending classes carry-on.

Parents reacting on first sentence are ‘hot wired, and frequently abusive as we know.

Hot topic sentence is a proven excitement in church sermons. Followed by the ‘look’ and the ‘tittering.’ No hub-bub needed. Audience knows what’s coming. Good for the men folk to hear, though they will sneer in back rooms with cigar, and truck ‘gates’ lowered.. Later.

Starting the show with bingo. Santorum dropped out because he was going to laughably lose his home state!!! But don't worry about Rick, He is going to be appointed to head the ministry of morals in homeland security....kinda like the 1930s Germany a perfect job for the right wing

April 13, 2012 - 10:14 am

My comment about the Hillary Rosen/Anne Romney matter is, that I don't give a darn about what a lower level Democrat functionary says about the potential first lady. Neither one of them, or their opinions, is important enough to concern me as a voter.

April 13, 2012 - 10:20 am

Did anyone ask Mrs. Romney how many nannies, maids and cooks helped her when she chose to stay at home? More women might do this if they could afford to.

April 13, 2012 - 10:29 am

I don't think publishers settling with DoJ is necessarily an indication that they may have been doing anything wrong as much as it is a business decision to not spend an indeterminable amount in legal fees against a foe with limitless funds.

April 13, 2012 - 10:29 am

Ann and Mitt have NO EARTHLY IDEA what day to day life is like for the struggling workin folk. They can spin this anyway they want but Rosen is right! By the way when are those 5 Romney boys going to join the military???

April 13, 2012 - 10:34 am

The issue as to whether Ann Romney can speak for women seems to only involve working mothers. There are thousands of young professionals who also pay taxes, vote and are very much a part of the political system that Ann Romney cannot speak for and that seems to be ignored in this discussion of 'who can speak for women' - we're not all the same.

April 13, 2012 - 10:40 am

I wonder if one of the panelists can comment on the Republican mantra to "not tax the job creators". It seems to me that the owners and highly paid corporate officers of companies do not create jobs unless there is demand and demand, by and large, comes from that vast middle class that will spend if they have disposable income. Furthermore, the rich buy what they want when they want and are completely uninfluenced by these relatively small changes in income, so taxes play virtually no part in their contribution to consumption and sales. Can someone tell me why anyone should fall for the idea of protecting the job creators by restraining tax policy?

April 13, 2012 - 10:42 am

George Zimmerman created the situation which he claims resulted in
his being threatened to the extent that he had to kill his quarry. This
law is an invitation to create a situation that can be resolved by killing.

April 13, 2012 - 10:42 am

We've now spend 2/3 of the show time. 30 min. on the election and the rest on the Martin case. In both cases it is a rush to judgement. Why not talk about other issues that are of more contemporary interest.

I'm so tired of hearing about the 'horse race' of the election I've tuned out of National TV news and I may tune out of this domestic Friday round up.

April 13, 2012 - 10:45 am

Regarding Ann Romney/Hilary Rosen:

1. Funny how Romney thinks that staying home to raise one's children is a valid career choice and the hardest job imaginable--until an impoverished single mother tries to do it. Since she lacks a millionaire hubby, they tell her to "get a job", despite all the stress and challenges she faces from dealing with poverty, living in a 'bad' neighborhood, raising children alone, etc. The whole point of "welfare reform" was to push these women into minimum-wage jobs at all cost (and take them away from their kids in the process). I guess only the privileged elite get to make that "career" choice, eh?

2. As a working mother, I take offense at Ann Romney saying that she chose to be a "full-time" mother. As if us women who work are NOT full-time mothers????

3. If Romney doesn't want his family brought into the campaign, then he should not bring them up in the first place. He said that his wife is his chief advisor on an issue with which she has zero experience. Rosen made a valid point--Ms. Romney is NOT qualified to speak to the experiences of mothers who work outside the home. So maybe Romney should find himself a new advisor on that topic.

April 13, 2012 - 10:45 am

I think that Mrs. Rommey does not know anything about real life pressures of raising children like the majority of American families have to do. She can't for sure relate to the middle class families where both parents must, must work all day and then still take care of all family issues at night. I had to work all day and so the day care thing with my children and then go home and cook and clean and bath and homework and bedtime. And then i'd do my homework (college) and the dishes.

this is the type of work and hardship she can't relate to no matter how hard she trys. Just because she had 5 children doesn't change things. there's lots of middle class families wiht 5 children as well.

My advice to her and the campaign would be to stay off this issue. Most of Americans will / do feel she is not qualified to relate to these families.

thank you,
betty

April 13, 2012 - 10:46 am

Ms. Rosen's comment was an immense gift to the Democrats. She used just the right words to allow the other camp to derail the conversation from the facts.

The facts are that Romney is out of touch, and that his reliance on his wife as a source for information about women issues was a sure recipe for him to stay out of touch.

April 13, 2012 - 10:47 am

Friend/know Hillary Rosen:
Note that two of the guests say they know Ms Rosen.
Where I come friend, it is difficult to be "tough" on a friend.
And: it seems to me that every one "inside the beltway" knows every other power broker and is protective of on e another.

"For the record": I do not know Hilary Rosen . . .

April 13, 2012 - 10:47 am

Does anyone believe that George Zimmerman can receive a fair trial?

April 13, 2012 - 10:49 am

Kelly:

If you are a full time mother and you work outside of the home, as an employer I now understand that you are giving me as little as possible. Correct?

April 13, 2012 - 10:52 am

I am with Kelly here. working mothers are also very MUCH full time mothers. they are the ones that should be getting the points for doing such a hard job. In these cases the working mothers actually have 2 careers, if you take it in that respect.

I think that mother hood should not be considered a career as much as a choice and a very important job. Mother hood is the one job that actually doesn't come with a manual.

So yes, Mr Rommey needs another person for speaking to the real working mothers of americ.
thanks
Betty

April 13, 2012 - 10:52 am

I live in Florida close to the Orlando area. I do not think he will get a fair trial here nor probably anywhere in the country.

I'm sorry to say, it's gonna be a real big mess.

April 13, 2012 - 10:53 am

StLouis,

Wrong. Full time is 8 hours a day 5 days a week (generally) that leaves 16 hours to be something else. Most people don't shut down and do nothing when they are not at work. I can give as much as possible at work and as much as possible in my other jobs / activities.

April 13, 2012 - 10:59 am

Ms. Rosen would have done better to describe A.R. as "unemployed;" THAT is irrefutable. A.R. does not contribute to the tax base or the GDP. She is UNEMPLOYED.
