Friday News Roundup - Domestic

Rising gas prices pushed consumer costs up in February but overall inflation remained mild; the Senate passed a two-year, $109 billion transportation and infrastructure bill on Wednesday, which now moves to the House; Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum won both Alabama and Mississippi primaries, prompting calls for Newt Gingrich to exit the race; and Federal Reserve "stress tests" on major banks showed all but a few would survive a major economic downturn. John King of CNN, Jackie Calmes of The New York Times and David Chalian of Yahoo News join Diane for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

President Obama’s re-election campaign kicked into high gear yesterday. His team released a new documentary and unleashed Vice President Biden in the battle for blue-collar voters. Economists reported the cost of living rose last month, most likely as a result of higher gas prices. Rick Santorum gained momentum and Newt Gingrich faced more pressure to step down after primaries in the Deep South. The G.O.P. fight now moves on to Puerto Rico and Illinois. And in a rare display of bipartisanship, the Senate passed a much-delayed transportation bill. John King of CNN, Jackie Calmes of The New York Times and David Chalian of Yahoo News join Diane for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

Thank you, Diane, for having John King clarify his comment about a $100 price tag for filling up his Acura. Tells you something about which "America" John is speaking for. I have 3 grandchildren under 12 who travel with us long distances. We feel very safe despite not driving an Acura that requires premium gas.

Big Fossil Fuel Energy is too modest in their claims for job creation - the jobs mining & processing the resources are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a huge number of jobs directly created that don't show up on the corps payrolls - the ones for the people who end up having to clean up the mess the corps leave behind, unfortunately many of those jobs are either unpaid or on the gov't payroll that taxpayers have to fund, so they don't impact energy prices or profits. Then there are the indirect jobs, such as treating the cleanup workers or mining neighbors for the toxic exposures they often experience, and the folks that get to supply bottled drinking water to folk's whose wells have been poisoned, the folks who get to clean up after the earthquakes that follow on the heels of fracking wastewater injections, etc. Natural catastophies and wars make cleanup job boomtimes, too, but they also deplete capital reserves ($ & human) for future cleanups. We need to ask what kind of jobs we want to be making, and to count all the lifecycle costs of our energy choices into the fuel prices, so that capitalism can work for us instead of against us!

Hey Marcus
Where do you get the FACT that 85% identify themselves as liberal? Even IF that is true, I will remind you that one of many definitions of liberal IS" tolerant; broadminded." Another is "favoring reform or PROGRESS" and "generous".
I,myself as a learned person, want my media giving me generous reporting of facts and broad mindfulness of the issues so I can make INFORMED decisions as to how to live my life.

A meme of the left. A lot of people listen to Rush Limbaugh - both right AND left. Far, FAR fewer are influenced by him.

Broadminded: good. progress: good. As for the last characteristic: "generous". Liberal progressives are generous, it's just with OPM. (Studies show that Conservatives are FAR MORE generous with their OWN money). Tolerant? Not when it comes to other people's opinions. And for these reasons "Liberal (with OPM) progressive (INtolerant of other opinions)": very, very bad.

"I,myself as a learned person, want my media giving me generous reporting of facts and broad mindfulness of the issues so I can make INFORMED decisions as to how to live my life."
As long as it doesn't come from Fox, right?

If the word "liberal" denotes such qualities, why do Democratic Party politicians hate to be referred to as "liberal?"

Hey Marcus
The Soviets decade war in Afghanistan had MORE to do with the fall of the Soviet Union than anything Raygun did. By the way my '73 Dodge Charger ran til 186,000 miles, my '72 Ford Torino ran til 148,000 (trainie gave out) and my '77 Chevy Monte Carlo had 178,000 miles in 1992 when I sold it for $500.00 (still running good) to a guy that was going to restore it. That small block 350 was one heck of motor.

March 16, 2012 - 11:37 am

Why isn't the media talking about the rise in gas prices from the oil companies' income statement.
Why does the price at the pump increase as soon as crude prices rise, when that gas has not been refined and delivered to the pump.
As soon as the GOP took over the House gas prices begin to rise again - less government oversight I would say.
According to Exxon SEC filing earnings per share 9/2011 increased 48% from 9/2010(pre GOP in the house).
The media needs to stop fooling the American public.
Please, Please, Please look at the oil companies' CEO's compensation and the profits. Then get on air and talk to us from what's on the books of the oil companies.
Quit talking about supply and demand. Demand has been down in the US, China, and India.

no as I said I'm liberal and am broadminded so I DO watch Fox news. I don't always agree with their version of the facts,or what the facts mean, just like MsNbc,Cnn, or Npr.

Whom do you suppose encouraged the Afghani to start up a Jihad with the Soviets, supplied the Afghani fighters with Stinger missiles and taught them how to engage a guerilla war with the Soviets?

The small block 350 was great, the z Bart rust proofing was not. You didn't seem to have any allegiance to one American automobile manufacturer. Did you get a 100,000 mile warranty from either GM or Ford back in the 70's?

Hey Marcus
As you well know I can NOT answer for why any Democratic politician hate to be labeled as liberal. But I can say I'm liberal and proud of it cause WE put the "lib" in LIBERTY !! And we will defend yore right to voice a difference in opinion. That's what makes this country GREAT!!!

March 16, 2012 - 11:52 am

The Soviet Union did themselves in. Their entire economy stalled out in the mid sixties as is obvious from anything that can be seen in news reels from more recent times. Their infrastructure is a relic of the 50's along with their cars. Central government planning for their economy was their worst enemy. Republicans take way too much credit for something they had little to do with, democrats deserve equal credit for the demise and put together does not amount to that much.

March 16, 2012 - 12:04 pm

This is what the T-Party gets confused about Limbaugh vs Maher. Maher is on premium cable.People choose or choose not to subscribe. Limbaugh is on my home town sports team broadcast channel. WE ARE FORCED TO HEAR THIS PUKE MEISTER,IF WE WANT TO HEAR RADIO SPORTS,WE`RE STUCK! Not only Limbaugh`s poison, but a cast of 1000`s on this sick channel. Each one more hate filled than the previous. Maher lost his free tv gig on ABC when he made a objectionable statement.Limbaugh will probably give himself another raise.

Who told you that? George Washington may have been a conservative, or even a libertarian, but he sure wasn't a liberal as liberal means in modern political terms.

Is this the Ron Paul official position?

I don't know, but great minds often think alike!

March 16, 2012 - 12:11 pm

Hey Marcus
Yes I understand that "we" helped the Afghani in their fight with the Soviets. I also understand that the Afghani"s had to had the will to fight in the first place(NOT Reagans doing) and the Soviets had to make the BAD decision to invade Afghanistan. (again NOT Reagans doing) and the unchecked cancer of corruption that plagued their govt. (of course nothing to do with Reagan)
If I remember correctly they didn't offer 100,000 mile warranties back then, so of course I didn't get it. As far as recalls EVERY brand of car has had a recall on a part or component of a system. Thanks to the work of people like Ralph Nader we have a system in place that compels manufacturers of products to inform us when they discover flaws in their products.

March 16, 2012 - 12:16 pm

Marcus,

For the time (late 1700's) George Washington and all his brethern, were HUGE liberals. The fact they wanted and created a government free from a hereditary monarchy and a create classless society, are some of the most liberal and radical ideas to come along in 2000 years.

These terms you two are discussing, Liberal and Conservative, are all relative depending on who you are talking to and probably hold little if any meaning except for the extremes on both sides.

Who even knows what the T party represents these days, by their endorsements they look like big government progressives. The only thing "conservative" about them seems to be their proclivity for too much religion in their politics. When it comes to foreign policy they are as out of control as democrats are with welfare programs.

While Nader wasn't responsible for all the Bondo you used to keep your 70's cars together, he was indeed the catalyst for dooming muscle cars.

About gas....

Obama wants us to confuse oil by the barrel w/ gas at the pump.

Much can be done to deal NOW to combat the high price of gas.

We just need a leader who can issue the clarion call to action!

Some examples:
*pressuring oil companies to issue coupons for the neediest - the unemployed so they can look for jobs; the disabled; food stamp recipients; minimum wage earners

*calling on retirees with large cars/vans to volunteer neighborhood trips to/from public transportation

*generating a nationwide movement for carpools with rewards, etc.

*calling on local communities to make extra school bus runs from neiborhoods to public transportation

*calling on gas companies to temporarily cut back even slightly on their ginormous profits - as a patriotic gesture (which will bring them much marketing return)

BUT...

Where's the leader to help us - TODAY!

Obama's excuses just indicate lack of crisis leadership.
