The Battle Over Women Voters

The Battle Over Women Voters

Republican presidential candidates are trying to woo female voters while appealing to the socially conservative base. Democrats accuse the GOP of waging a war on women. Diane and her guests discuss the battle over female voters.

Women cast nearly ten million more votes than men in the last presidential race. Their traditional preference for Democrats helped put President Obama in the White House. but the female vote swung to the GOP in 2010, giving Republicans congrol of the House. Now there are signs of another shift. Recent polls show Republicans have been hurt by the current focus on contraception, abortion and women’s health issues. This week the President’s re-election campaign plans to launch an intensified effort to mobilize female voters. Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post, Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women and Phyllis Schlafly, founder and president of the eagle forum, join Diane to discuss the battle for and about women.

This entire Fluke matter is beyond the pale. There was no conspiracy here, only the paranoid ramblings of the folks on the right who have been "bested" by the sheer force of intelligence.
If the Republicans somehow want to attract women voters in 2012, they have spent the entire period of time between winning congress in 2010, doing everything in their power to make sure that it didn't happen. And women have taken notice....

Love your source TB.

Republican mouth pieces like Limbaugh were allowed to denigrate the Democratic Party, to calling it the Democrat Party. They got away with it. Now they denigrate all women by calling them Sluts and Whores. Will we pacify them again? Will we allow them to reclassify our moms, wives, sisters, daughters, and friends into the same foolish female tv types, paid pundits, and infamous females on Fox News? One of these Fox women said toxic waste is good for you. MOM,will you feed you kids toxic waste? The best defense is a good offense. When you`re hiding from the "Great Bush Recession",of course they`d want to change the subject.

There seems to be a dollar disconnect among politicians who want to remove public funding to Planned Parenthood, the only affordable option for women in some areas for birth control. I've heard conservative panelists on a previous Diane Rehm show say another $50/month for birth control is no big deal. On the other hand, if the price of gas for vehicles increased by $50/month, they'd declare a national crisis and it would (and has) led the evening news.

Hey Mariah I heard if you get it at Walmart it is $5 a month.

TB it doesn't sound like it has effected his show. The article also stated that those 98 advertisers don't advertise or never had on Hannity or Ed Schlutz on PMSNBC.
I do know that Carbon Nite who pulled out saw a big hit on their stock price, like going South.

March 12, 2012 - 12:16 am

Yea,people are noticing. If you aren`t an old fat white guy,you are viciously attacked by the radical right.

March 12, 2012 - 8:27 am

Damnit! I'm sick of this: "Girls think boys are gross; boys think girls have cooties," mentality. It is not polite or thoughtful discourse to repeat dogma like a robo-call. Please desist from these insult trades and try to express your opinions in an original considered way. Contraception and bodily privacy are life and death issues, for both women and men.

Pancake, the democrat party has decided to use this as a wedge issue for political gain. It was a successful effort to force commentary from the right. Religious conservatives have been talking about the moral issues for decades with the intent of helping, but are always slammed because of the religious aspect of it. If Diane Rehm cannot take a reasonable even handed stand on this moral outrage issue we will continue what we have here. Her personal vendetta against Rush Limbaugh and the republican party is what is driving the discussion.

March 12, 2012 - 9:26 am

Why shouldn`t the Democratic Party use this issue as a wedge issue ? Democrats are SUPPOSED to be advocates for those who suffer most. Protect those among us who are under attack and vulnerable. I`M PROUD WHEN WE REMEMBER OUR CORE VALUES.

Before the Sandra Fluke hearing scandal there was not a problem for women to find contraception for little or no cost. There was no talk from the right to get rid of contraceptive options, what there was was an outcry over first amendment issues and government overreach that have been completely lost in this fake controversy. You are nothing more than a pawn Patsy, fitting name for my point. If Diane cared the topic of first amendment rights should have been addressed early on, sorry to say she has only fanned the flames.

Phyllis Schlafly again with the canard about how George Snuffleufagus started this all.

That's a feature, not a bug.

"Dependent for their living expenses on handouts from the government." Hilarious. Like Halliburton, Lockheed and Blackwater?

There is a very simple way to decide on this insurance coverage issue, if the insurance plan covers erection dysfunction medications and aparatuses that plan needs to cover birth control medications and procedures at parody.
Plain and simple.
If a person does not believe in using birth control don't use it. If an employer doesn't believe in birth control that employer doesn't have to use it - but they do need to provide insured coverage of birth control for those who believe in birth control use.
Actually males should not be allowed to vote on this issue, they plant their seed and have the option to walk away leaving a woman to raise the product of that seed alone.
Since erection control is provided for men who may or may not care about the product of their erection equal coverage needs to be provided as well.

I want to know why you couldn't find anyone more relevant to today that Phyllis Schaffly. She hasn't been relevant in the national scene for decades and is a has-been culture warrior. Good grief.

March 12, 2012 - 10:22 am

Excellent timing for this issue. Did anyone read the Doonsbury cartoon today?

March 12, 2012 - 10:22 am

How does MS. Schafly feel about insurance coverage of Viagra?

March 12, 2012 - 10:23 am

Phyllis Schafly is an embarrassment to any woman who has a sense of herself. Be sure to read some of Phyllis' old books where she advocated the subservience of women to men.

March 12, 2012 - 10:23 am

For years the true goal of many anti-abortion activists has been to limit women's access to contraceptives. The majority of poor, uninsured, and underinsured women receive their primary health care from federally funded health care clinics including Planned Parenthood. Over the last forty years, Planned Parenthood has developed an efficient and cost-effective health care delivery system in rural, urban, and suburban communities. The Republicans are not only attacking contraceptives but a primary women's health care provider. They have not developed a parallel health care delivery system to fill in the gaps when funding to Planned Parenthood has been cut. They just want to cut without thinking of long-term consequences on children, women, men, family well-being, and on economics.

What will be the ultimate result of these funding cuts? Poor, underinsured, and uninsured women will have trouble accessing primary health care services, pre-natal and post-natal care, increased stress on our already overburdened ERs', increased numbers of premature births due to either no or limited prenatal care, increased number of abortions as a means of birth control due to lack of access to effective and affordable health care, and increases in infant and maternal deaths.

The Republicans attack on women's health care and health care delivery system of Planned Parenthood is frankly stupid. If you want to decrease abortions and unwanted pregnancies, you need to make women's health care easily accessible and affordable. It will result in increased numbers of sick, stillborn, and dead babies and more maternal deaths. Does this make sense? Is this pro-life?

I can't believe that it's 2012 and we're still debating contraceptives. This is not just a women's issue. This is a man's issue as well.

March 12, 2012 - 10:24 am

Ms. Schlafly...your comment that only single mom's who have children will vote for the Democratic party because they want a government handout is insulting. I am a single mom, I have two special needs kids and my ex-husband is useless in their care and support. I do it on my own, WITHOUT government support and I vote Democratic. I vote Democratic because it protects MY ability to choose what to do with my body. I vote Democratic because they support allowing me to love who I want to love, male or female...I vote Democratic because even though I believe our community SHOULD support the poor and needy, our community does a vastly inadequate job of doing so and the government needs to be the safety net of last resort. And I know MANY MANY MANY married women who vote Democratic because they KNOW that the Republican party is out of touch with the general welfare of women's needs.

March 12, 2012 - 10:24 am

As a St Louisan, I am always embarrassed when I hear Phylis Schlafley speak. Why does Diane Rehm give air time to her half truths and distortions? I can't listen to this today; it makes me too angry.

March 12, 2012 - 10:24 am

BRAVO!!!!

March 12, 2012 - 10:26 am

What Karen said...Phyllis just doesn't get it and has been irrelevant for years...

March 12, 2012 - 10:26 am

I am sorry that Diane chose Phyllis to discuss this issue. She is a divisive person. Diane could have chosen a better informed individual to represent the Republicans.

Is this woman serious? This is so typical of these ignorant fools. Single mothers want the government to take care of them? Really? And Obama wants more single mothers to take care of? Really? Where is she getting her stellar facts? This woman is a moron and an affront to woman everywhere. Can we at least have an intelligent voice on the other side, this lady is just spouting vitriolic rhetoric.

March 12, 2012 - 10:27 am

Ms Schafly is wrong; it is an access issue. Birth control pills require a pelvic exam by a physician AND a prescription. Some physicians do not even follow the guidelines that state after normal pap exams, an annual exam is not required for the pill. It's a money game. They get women on the hook for the doctor's appointment AND the prescription. Birth control pills are hormones. I have been on the pill since the age of 16, well before sexual activity, because I needed the hormones. That gets ignored in this entire debate. It is a HEALTH issue.

March 12, 2012 - 10:27 am

Phyllis Schlafly really?! I am speechless I guess because I am surprised she is still around fighting the fight. Feminists....that term seems odd nowadays the only one using it are old conservatives (Schlafly & Limbaugh) I prefer progressive for Elizabeth Warren.

March 12, 2012 - 10:28 am

I don't understand why Diane let's Schlafly get away with calling the Affordable Health Care Act "Obama-care." I remember distinctly her correcting a younger male commentator who made the same mistake.
