Mark Whitaker: "My Long Trip Home: A Family Memoir"

CNN executive, former Newsweek editor and award-winning journalist Mark Whitaker delves into the factual and emotional aspects of his family's complicated, interracial history.

It was the 1950s. He was one of the few African American students at Pennsylvania's Swarthmore College. She was a white French teacher. They fell in love, married - at a time when interracial marriage was banned in much of America - and a few years later, divorced. One of the couple's two children, Mark Whitaker, is managing editor of CNN Worldwide and the former editor of Newsweek. In a memoir, Whitaker explores his unusual family tree, his rift with his father, and why it's never too late to heal even the oldest wounds.

It is not true that there were so few of you, it is just that bi-ethnic people were mostly being raised in the black community.

My kids' genes stem from locations that are as far apart as possible on this globe. They grow up in this country. I deeply appreciate today's guest's enlightened insights. They provide hope. He might enjoy this quote:
“I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white.”

careful examination of our 'purest' example of a specific 'color' will reveal a history somewhere along the line where raping and pillaging were local events. You ask grandma about IT... or granDad. US know better.

Just like today but with new and improved 'safe' rape by corporations... they bought governments to stay 'safe'/ pure.
