Friday News Roundup - Hour 1

President Obama's jobs bill is blocked in the Senate. Congress approves long-awaited free trade pacts. And protests that began on Wall Street are echoing in cities across America. A panel of journalists joins guest host Susan Page for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain takes the lead in the latest GOP presidential polls. Former Governor Mitt Romney comes in second, but he gains the support of New Jersey’s Chris Christie. On the Democratic side, President Obama raises $70 million in the last three months for his re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Congress comes together to pass long-delayed trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia and Panama. However, the President’s jobs bill fails to get the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate. A panel of journalists joins guest host Susan Page of USA Today for the domestic hour of our Friday News Roundup

Those DR Show callers/emailers/twits who complain about the lack of lame stream media coverage directed at the Occupy Wall Street folks (aka, the escapees from last year's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear") should be ecstatic about ABC News Diane Sawyer's reporting.

"We thought we would bring you up to date on those protestors, the occupy Wall Street movement. As of tonight, it has spread to more than 250 American cities, more than 1000 countries— every continent but Antarctica." Diane Sawyer, ABC World News, October 10, 2011

It is truly amazing to watch as the "Occupy Wall Street" movement grows. As the number and diversity of the 99 percenters continues to increase, the media has begun to take this organic movement more seriously.
They are asking the questions
"What do you people want?",
"Who are your leaders?" and
"What's with the bongos?"

"What do we want?"
We want our politicians to work as hard for us as they do for the Oligarchs.

"Who are our leaders?"
They are Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Harriet Tubman and Bob La Follette and Martin Luther King and many many others who have marched through history in the name of democracy and freedom.

"What's with the bongos?"
They are our fife and drums. They are our clarion call. they are our shout out to the world that the people are coming.

The 99 percenters are rising up and taking on the task of fixing our broken system. This is just the beginning.

“First they ignore you,
then they laugh at you,
then they fight you,
then you win.”

Diversity? You can characterize these people as either tired old wanna be Bolsheviks, or children of parents who constantly told them they were just too precious to be disciplined. They are the products of a culture where dodge ball is considered too competitive and too traumatic for their delicate psyches.

The week encapsulated: Dancing With the Stars' Week Four….Ricki Gets a Perfect 10…. Cher Cries Over Chaz! Kelly Clarkson without Makeup….Ashton’s Allegded Mistress Makes Big Confession….Real Housewives Feud Explodes…..Gwyneth Paltrow and Mark Ruffalo caugh kissing….

My country’s political process has been high-jacked by big money. Wake up folks, as long as there is money involved we will NEVER know the truth about anything ever again. And we will NEVER get anything accomplished. Kiss your freedom good-bye.

There Cher, there’s something to really cry about!

Go OWS'ers.

A country where top 5% controls 90% of it's resources is not representative of a government of “for and by the people”. It’s time to stop pretending we live in a Democracy and rebrand it something more appropriate.

Those that have supported trickle up economics for past 30 years, should be enormously happy- now that the top few % have all the $.
Anyone delusional enough to believe it would “trickle” back down to everyone, SHOULD HAVE been rudely awakened by now.

“The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes…. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong it’s reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." –

uselesseater, Teece and Drew. There is a candidate who addresses all of your concerns and wants to do something about it, Ron Paul. He will expect you to accept less government but in return you will have a President representing your concerns. Right and left for once should come together and elect someone who wants to make a real difference. I never understood the mentality that thinks government can be good at what I like and bad at what I don't like. Government is bad at everything! and it should be held to limits placed upon it by the Constitution. The further away we get from the Constitution the worse things get.

October 13, 2011 - 7:33 pm

Monte,
If you don't like government "for and by the people" what are you doing in America? We own it.
It doesn't read "for and by the Corps", although with the help of GOP and recent Supreme Court ruling perhaps that's the way it now ought to read.

If it ain't workin'- do what you can to fix it or get out of Dodge. Be part of a solution or move somewhere else. This country's got enough problems
without you putting it down all the time.

You've gotta stop mainlining Fox "news" and sample the real world now and again Monte.

I think I would have to pass on Mr. Paul. The only place where I've seen the full blossoming of his vision of a Utopian Libertarian paradise is Somolia and I don't quite have the stomach for that.
Maybe if Mr. Thiel gets his floating cities up and running and I hit the lottery for a few hundred million it might be kind of neat. I wonder though if their unemployment plan is that they throw you overboard when you run out of money.
I kind of like this crazy idea that the founding fathers had about we the people.
They believed that we are the government and we would decide how it worked.
They even gave us this nifty little tool that would help us to maintain it. I think it's called a vote. They even left us instructions on how to use it. Rumor has it that if you put enough of them together you can do practically anything.

October 13, 2011 - 8:40 pm

UE,
Appreciate your first comment-

I think the founders would be impressed.

October 13, 2011 - 8:54 pm

Marcus,
I suppose you'd be more more impressed with the protesters if they were breaking windows, burning cars, vandalizing, and bringing signs more like the T Partiers saying something like, "we brought our guns this time and we're bringing 'em next time too".

One of the multitude of problems with Paul as a potential POTUS. besides being into all types of conspiracy woo and his moral equivalency in dealing with the middle east, is that he believes he has a monopoly on abiding by the principals of the Constitution.

Since he wants to be the standard bearer for all things libertarian, why does he keep running as a Republican?

I would think that you would consider the WS protestors racist considering the paucity of blacks present. These professional protestors couldn't leave any more debris behind if they broke windows, burned cars, and vandalized.

October 13, 2011 - 9:23 pm

You guy's! I am overwhelmed by misguided thought processes. Somalia, really, Ron Paul anarchist? Drew, the Constitution abolished because it does not pass a popularity contest? Marcus, dude! the guy proclaims nothing in regards to a superior insight into the meaning and intent of the Constitution and certainly not a monopoly on the application of the Constitution. If anything he is the only one concerned with it's importance.

"I kind of like this crazy idea that the founding fathers had about we the people.

No, your wrong! They gave us the ability to AMEND the Constitution, not circumvent it by popular vote or demand!!!!

October 13, 2011 - 9:58 pm

At the close of the Constitutional convention a woman came up the Ben Franklin and asked him what type of government had the delegates proposed to set up.
He replied " We have given you a republic if you can keep it."

The nice thing about this magnificent creation our founding fathers bequeathed to us is that even a useless eater like me can understand it.

October 13, 2011 - 10:38 pm

I think GOP finally has me convinced about “starve the government” stuff.
How much better if founding fathers sitting down to write constitution had following conversation:
“Hey guys, whaty’all say we create a government.” “Hell, no, we don‘t need no stinkin’ guvment- just hand out some baseball bats and some sharp sticks and who ever‘s left standing let them do what they want.” “Hey Madison, how’s about ‘for and by the people’”. “That sounds like a bunch of focialist Comi crap, what‘y a think Ben”. “I agree. Matter of fact, write this down Jefferson, if anyone ever fuggests a policy with intent of benefiting majority of Americans they will be labeled SOCIALIST comis and burnt at stake.” Adams, “Hey and write this too- if there ever happens to be a furplus for some odd reason lets instead of ufing it for benefit of the people lets distribute it to the richest amongst us” “Great, I’ll 2nd that” “How bout this- if we ever become powerful enough, let’s make up excufes to occupy other countries” “But won’t that create terrorifts” “Yes but we need terrorists to sustain perpetual War and support military induftrial complex” “Good. And let’s tappeth phones indifcriminately and torture some folks- let’s not wait 200 + years to put that down” “Good good. Boy generations to come sure will be proud”. “I’ll drink some madeira to that“.

October 13, 2011 - 10:53 pm

I'd like to see these protesters focus there energy toward an "emancipation proclamation" for congress. If we amend the constitution to ban corporations and interest groups from making political contributions we may be able to find our way back to the solemn idea of "for the people".

Here we go again Drew, everything starts during Reagan Administration. Wish we had a real leader rightnow Drew. Reagan was the best leader of the best.

Great Point Marcus and you didn't even mention the smell left by these protesters.

I would like to ask the panel how long do they think the OWS protests will last? If this is a movement spreading to cities accross the US, will the sustainability of the protests create real change or will the momentum simply fade into afterthought?

Until it gets cold.

I'm curious as to why the only guests on the DR show are only from major main stream outlets like Time and Bloomberg. This has been a fairly recent trend - there used to be some alternative voices such as The Nation and Mother Jones. The issue is not just point of view but the fact that the views you hear from the 'usual suspects' are everywhere - it would be great to hear alternative views from journalists, not just Diane's listeners.

October 14, 2011 - 9:55 am

If the panel spends more than 10 min. on the horse race of the election I am going to tune out.

On Ron Paul, "Since he wants to be the standard bearer for all things libertarian, why does he keep running as a Republican?"

Ron Paul, 12 term republican congressman from Texas, winner of the Republican Leadership Conference straw pole this year. Ron Paul's place in the republican party is a non issue, he has earned his place as a true conservative and most if not all of the current line up of presidential candidates would be well served to follow his example of respect for the Constitution.

MSNBC host Ed has gone down on the streets with the Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York and Chicago and interviewed actual protesters instead of manufacturing what these folks are protesting which is the way the majority of MSM host and what your guest will more than likely do.

One thing that is clear is that the common threads running through every protesters constructive criticisms is that they want to witness justice and accountability when it comes to those who brought the US economy to a cliff, taxes, access to quality jobs, etc etc. The demand is loud and clear JUSTICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

October 14, 2011 - 10:44 am

Susan and guest the Occupy Wall Street protest have spread to 1400 cities and towns across the nation. There have been protest in Kansas City and Wichita. The negative effects of Wall Street operators bringing the US economy to a cliff effects people across the nation as well as around the world. But you all ready know that.

The common thread running through everything I have heard being expressed by the protesters who the MSM are actually directly interviewing are 'JUSTICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY" in regard to Wall Street, taxes, jobs etc...those interest effect the larger portion of people across the country and world

A blip about the protest in Wichita.
"Young was among the "Occupy Wichita" demonstrators who gathered Monday in downtown Wichita as part of a fledgling movement hoping to inspire that change.
About 40 or so people held signs near the Market and Broadway intersections along Douglas Avenue to protest what they consider corporate greed and political corruption in America.

Susan Page said she was from Kansas and can not imagine that many folks in Kansas are part of the Occupy Wall Street crowd

Susan from the "Wichita Eagle"

About that '99 percent'
Members of the Wichita movement said their goal is to form daily peaceful gatherings of those who feel wronged by corporations and government policies that place profits over people.
They are establishing a staging area in the Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square Park just east of Douglas and Market, where the 1958 Dockum Drug Store sit-in is commemorated by a bronze lunch counter sculpture. They plan to have food, live music, a library for resource materials, and art equipment to paint a mural.
"I would like to try to make it an occupation, a show of commitment," Young said.
Demonstrators held signs saying things such as, "Stop Corporate Greed, Government Corruption," "Stop Paying for Your Own Oppression," "Bail Out the People, Not the Banks," and "Bad Criminals go to Jail. The Best go to Washington, D.C."
Motorists glanced at the signs as they drove past, and some honked their support.
"We're sick of the government corruption from corporate bribes," said demonstrator Jennifer Kramer.
She said she wants the IRS to audit members of the U.S. Congress to find out who is funding them.
"They're not serving the people. They've pledged allegiance to the corporations and not the people," she said.

Listening to these pundits fold themselves into a pretzel, claiming that the Repubs have been as willing to compromise as the Dems - Am I listening to Fox (Faux) News?

October 14, 2011 - 10:50 am

I thought the most stupid comment during the Republican debate was Rep Bachmans when she said something like "flip Cains 999 plan and you get 666 the devil is in the details"

If I were a Saturday Night Live writer I would go wild with this one. Let's see if you flip 999 to the right side you get..if you flip 999 to the left you get...if you spin 999 in a circle really fast it turns into pin wheel and you can see the face of the devil.

One of the most stupid comments I have ever heard. Bachman has truly lost it

October 14, 2011 - 10:51 am

I continue to be disappointed in the media's response to the Occupy Wall Street protests. We hear them say repeatedly, What do they want? What specific actions to they propose?

First, it should be clear that we have become a "corporation nation," to use the title of an important book on this topic by Charles Derber. Corporations rule Congress, and Obama is also far too cozy with Wall Street. Largely because of big money from corporate America, big oil, etc., our political system is broken. We are unable to even address our major problems, from unemployment--the big immediate crisis--and climate change--the looming crisis.

Our frustration is broad, covers so many issues of concern. But we need to reduce the power of corporate money in our politics--that is key. This may require a couple more appointments to the Supreme Court as the Citizens United case last year had exacerbated the problem.
