Friday News Roundup - Hour 1

Guest Host:

Steve Roberts
Friday News Roundup - Hour 1

Republican presidential candidates debate in Orlando. The threat of a government shutdown intensifies. And the decades-long ban on gays serving in the military officially ends. A panel of journalists joins guest host Steve Roberts for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

Rick Perry and Mitt Romney attack each other’s conservative credentials in the third Republican debate. The Fed moves to lower interest rates by purchasing long-term bonds. A possible government shutdown looms as the House of Representatives passes a funding bill that Senate Democrats vow to reject. Home sales go up but remain weak. Gays can now serve openly in the military as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” officially ends. The controversial execution of Troy Davis in Georgia despite worldwide appeals for clemency puts capital punishment back in the spotlight. And Twitter starts selling political ads. A panel of journalists joins guest host Steve Roberts for analysis of the week's top national news stories.

Let's see what the panel and sub host Roberts has to say about Tony Bennett's 911 moonbat conspiracy and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's 911 moonbat conspiracy (and Holocaust) comments.

Bennett's mea culpa after his comments on Howard Stern:

"My life experiences -- ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching with Martin Luther King -- made me a lifelong humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior." Tony Bennett 9/21/2011

Except that Tony was not in the Battle of The Bulge. He didn't get to the front lines in Europe until March, 1945.

Watching the debate this evening you could really see the cracks growing wider in the Republican Party between the establishment (The Wall Streeters) and Tea Party wings. Most people watching see this as a slugfest between Romney and Perry. What is actually happening is an emerging armageddon between the so-called economic pragmatists and the lunatic ring-wing fringe ideologues. There is no doubt whatsoever that Perry is moonbat nuts and says exactly the type of “red-meat” statements that the Tea Party carnivores want to hear, thus you aren’t going to hear Romney call for more government spending….well, not before the Republican nomination. Even though behind the scenes you know that the Wall Streeters are biting their nails and hoping for the best.
Wall Street voted for Obama in 2008 and while they might not want him reelected in 2012, they have an animalistic/primal need to save their ASSets. But cooler minds may not prevail. In which case, I’ve reached something of an epiphany this evening. If the forces of darkness prevail and it seems imminent that we shall descend into a Krystallnacht in 2012, then I will cast my vote for Perry. Let’s kick the Revolution off in style. Before it is over Imperial Russia won’t be able to hold a candle to us. And shame on us for allowing two political parties to ever become so out of touch with “we the people”. This is what a lack of educational institutions and critical thinking leads to.
Let’s see, I think I’ve got some science books over here that will make a nice addition to a burn pile….

In response to one of Teece Bowman's exchange with Monte from yesterday

It is not fair to gang against Monte! He apparently is accepting that the country needs a combination of government and the private sector. This country became big because of the private initiative (and its natural resources) but became great with the government participating in this effort (i.e. after WWII).

I have asked in a previous message that one should calculate how much would it cost a private entity to provide the services that the government provides and how it would levy funds from its customers (Consider, for example, a super-duper Blackwater that would provide all the services the military provides. Would that cost less to the average person than the operation run by the Defense Dept?).

So the issue is to find the correct mix and ways. That requires toning down the political histrionics and the notion that only WE know the truth and let our brains than our gut do the walking.

September 23, 2011 - 8:22 am

Our last month with roof(homeless vet- cliche time)- to store free forty dollar glasses and expired aspirin from VA... very intense religious conversion doctrine working well... fasting(purifying) and eliminating any personal belongings(our career savings in house/home/burial ground- yes it legal here- just no trash burning).

FEEL worse for other veteran. US 'worked'(no taxes- no safety- no interference from humanity) clearing HIS house (one week and 16 square feet emptied).as when t-boned by truck hospitalized and in rehab his home condemnend. As he fouled up his paperwork(stupid 70yr old) and his entitlement reduced to repay we learned extent of his hobby- seems like ALL greats(handcrafted beauties his) and 'shopping' for decades('making' friends and stimulating local economy) the sheer volume and decay of his former residence MAKES it a daunting task to even gain entry to his former domicile. WAS so bad he was living in yard(smell- but at seventy and vet he has smelled worse)...

So earned enough to pay for gas to get there, wash US clothes, and had twenty dollars left to put with US sole income- $200 food stamp benefit(our states maximum amount). Today will hitchhike(predict hitchhiking increase US- heard IT first here N reducing gas consumption Yea!).

His discharge from physical therapy in two weeks AND is prohibited to return to his yard(condemned) but his $900
COMBINED SS and VA should cover his needs... as no one told him(or was too proud like US) about state maximum $200 per month food allowance which is just a ridiculous waste of tax dollars.

An individual expression of our US...

September 23, 2011 - 9:17 am

Sorry todays topic was about the important striff within the Party...

WILL WORK for food/ housing. Two degrees, bilingual, telecom/ electronic/electrical SME who left career 2003 (un)voluntarily... will accept ANY work ANYWHERE which does NOT include violating ANY oaths...

And , of course, looking for supervised(mental/ physical) housing for that other useless breather- er- veteran.

US would house him here BUT for two weeks seems silly. US do our best with him, promise, as next to home of US Army elite Special Forces and US have lotsa sick and homeless veterans here so will share bridges(careful- some crumbling- not bad for 100 year old construction though).

September 23, 2011 - 9:17 am

Thank you thefairtaxman my Ayn Rand/libertarian views of government and life in general do not go over so well here. It's boring to be agreed with and I like the contrast of my opinions in this very lopsided forum, although they would never admit it I think several here would miss my comments if they were to stop.

About the debates I would say it looks obvious that Romney will be the final candidate, Perry just has way too many bad decisions as Governor of Texas. My choice of course is Ron Paul. The others just don't look presidential and as we all know you gotta look good on the tube to get anywhere theses days, Romney gives good tube. I think he would be a mediocre president but a vast improvement over what we have now.

September 23, 2011 - 9:22 am

Also looking for volunteers(NAVY- Never Again Volunteer Yourself) to help shovel, er- sort, his belongings for 'yard' sale,
LOTSA stuff but no money, and he hopes for security deposit cash... son and daughter cannot afford loss of income/ job to come(good nonunion jobs).

If you have truck, trailer, please pick me up on way. If not, see you there.

Ron Paul- honest libertarian not changing/ flipflopping to polls SO doomwed as OPUS candidate(again).

PArry- too much said

Romney- 'slick' 'professional' 'new' business success(closing and selling off companies assets LOL)

The two crazy ladies(paling to PArry)???

PArry-Bachman-Romney slugfest and who wins you will be told.

Pretty sure US loses. But NOW relevant one last time(comm being cutoff)

September 23, 2011 - 9:28 am

Meanwhile in Georgia...

September 23, 2011 - 9:36 am

How are unfair tax increases going to get this economy moving again? Why do we get so little return for our buck when it's spent by the government and yet the answer for some is to have the government spend more and more? Email and faxes have shrunk the need for the postal service and yet its budget keeps growing. Cold war-era military bases supported all around the world and yet the global power structure has shifted dramatcially. Despite ever-rising budgets we've got a declining ability of kids to read, write and do math and yet we can't hold teachers accountable.

September 23, 2011 - 9:45 am

As a black woman, 62, I remember how President Obama was raked over the coals for what his minister said in his pulpit. My minister did the same. He just told us what he endured in Alabama. Fannie Lewis the late councilwoman, here in my ward, did the same. John Lewis spoke of being spat upon in chambers and he is discounted just because white people say they did not see it. It's what you do best. Now, we have wanna be candidates who have agreed that black children would be better off in 1860 and you have your heads buried in the sand. YOu have candidates whose church has PREACHED and practiced we were meant to be the white man's slave, even after death. Still, silence. I guess it is okay for white people to insult me and mine and this president but we cannot complain about four little girls blown up in a church. the hypocricy is astounding. It will be a loooong time before this Voinovich democrat votes for another republican.

September 23, 2011 - 9:54 am

LOL giving 'good tube' new definition of professional politicians
(old enough to remember when that explained Congressional pages and 'good' help= correction 'excellent' help)

Let US destroy world and US economy to get that colored OPUS fellow out... very profitable for a few... care to guess WHICH few?

Monte you become well rounded after catching terrorists(criminals), being terminated as 'terrorist'(whistle-blower), being called liberal, conservative, Republican and/or Democrat, progressive AND Congressive-er- regressive, Socialist, Communist, Capitalist, warmonger, peacenik, well the list goes on... the funnier name calling and among my favorites ARE the self-contradicting ones.

You go commie proAmerican liberal conserrvative tbagger!

September 23, 2011 - 10:16 am

Hypocrisy. From people? Surely you exaggerate... But US think you better equiped for anything life throws at you(remember to occasionally 'duck' to be safer) THAN most...

God's law perfect... only after 'professional'
handling and fallible human lapses does IT become so distorted.

Will Rogers correct- luckily we receive only a fraction of what we pay for... BUT now fraction gone(only fractals left and they sharp and pointed mostly).

September 23, 2011 - 10:26 am

80-20 rule

despite laws, efforts, and good will people still people.

good teachers teach besides bad laws

bad teachers dont next to good laws(and why do only criminals break the law to begin with- think US onto something)

and do we really want to return our mercernaries- er- paid professional warriors(luckily few can read and fewer can find definition of merc) HOME and abandon the world(the Joy of xenophobia and other related isolationist ills)?

oops. You are correct- US apologies- doctor.

US need them for food riots, Project Soylent Green, and as supplemental force to our Blackwater, er- 'Z', or whatever R B K -like domestic trained police(just like in Iraq, ...)

US ready volunteer again. Pyrate time... again???

September 23, 2011 - 10:35 am

Media pundits continue to promote Perry and Romney as "viable" candidates, though various polls show a three was split, including Ron Paul. Expect more of the same folks, the closer to primary time we come. Mainstream media does not endorse a Ron Paul candidacy. Political entanglements make it obvious, notwithstanding NPR - PRI.

September 23, 2011 - 10:42 am

Thank God not in GA . Heard IT rougher there.

Loved the lost crops to lack of labor as previous workforce avoiding state. Wow that law got amended quickly. Shhh, was 'modified' Q U I E T L Y to bring back migrant workers... just like our fathers and theirs did.

US received many 'consolidations(BRAC)' transfers from GA whom cannot purchase a home here as unable to sell their home there... there went US salvation... and those families now split TOO.

I read a newspaper article suggesting that instead of these "debates," someone -- NPR or public television, perhaps -- sponsor in-depth policy interviews with each candidate & then have them available to all to read or listen to at any time. What do you think of this?

September 23, 2011 - 10:46 am

the old fish(pisces62) IS right- only vote Ron Paul as he NOT really Republican(been going downhill since OPUS Nixon)

love,

another semi-old fish

September 23, 2011 - 10:49 am

Wow. Except for Karen Tumulty, the panel really did a truly lousy job of responding to the "why do you only cover the horse race?" question.

Don't people in the press understand that democracy is impossible if they don't do their jobs diligently? They all seem to want to become high-paid entertainers.

September 23, 2011 - 10:50 am

Good notion BUT

best example of business efficiency fascism.

apparently costly luggage attached- side effects potentially lethal- but cost minimized and resources maximized...

oh wait- GOVERNMENT IS LIKE a business in that it is NOT !!!

sILLY HUman

September 23, 2011 - 10:53 am

The caller who criticized your program for not discussing the Suskind book was not making a point about lack of coverage, he was trying to say he would like to hear more in-depth discussion and analysis than simply reporting about who's ahead in the horse races. He was, albeit obviously nervous and less than 100% effective in making his point, correct. Many examples could be raised, but time is limited so one will have to suffice. Yes, you mentioned the name of Ron Paul and dutifully reported his standing in the horse race and his staying power. But you utterly failed to add any analysis about *why* he has such staying power such staunch support, much less any analysis or opinion about why he can't seem to break into the top two in the polls given his background, experience, professional standing, and his non-mainstream views and prescriptions. I am, by the way, not a Ron Paul supporter. I don't support any of the current candidates, I'm just looking for one that I can support. Your willingness to follow mainstream media in the thin and paltry analysis has not helped.

September 23, 2011 - 11:01 am

Bort,

Bit of a latecomer myself; I will have to circle back and hear that on the podcast.

If you didn't care for the "why the horserace" answers, you had better sit down before you read about how the taste-makers, agenda-setters and morning-narrative-winners on our cable networks cover the economy.

When it came to the debt ceiling "crisis", they basically did it by ignoring economists.

A FREE AND OPEN DEMOCRACY erodes and is lost when openness, debate, and liberties curtailed.

Luckily that not our problem anymore... but an 'efficienct' low bid MAX ReturnOnInvestment short term no regard to associated costs as no valuable local, state or federal LONG term effects factored into computer model on profitability... might be an 'oops' coming...

Unemployed fact seeker from system almost bankrupt of actual science/math rigors? Or millionaire spinner? Not too tough for most to try(and 'win' the lotto).

US would make wrong choice- BUT we exceptional(had to sell the medals that prove IT but US told exceptional many times NOT just by Mom)- and please sit up straight- you're slumping in your chair AND that bad for future healthcare costs.

September 23, 2011 - 11:03 am

All I got out of the debate last night was this:

"You did it."

"Did not"

"Did too"

September 23, 2011 - 11:05 am

"Don't people in the press understand that democracy is impossible if they don't do their jobs diligently? They all seem to want to become high-paid entertainers."

Yeah, but you gotta give good tube!

Seriously, this is the problem with America. We have too many ten watt bulbs in 100 watt sockets and we just wanna be entertained. Our entertainment becomes our knowledge base and our information. When was the last time you heard anyone discuss books? In other cultures they kill poets, here we simply laugh at them. Words mean nothing.

No critical thinking. We are a mile wide and a half and inch deep.

We are "Dancing with the Stars and American Idol" in a nutshell and it has destroyed us. American exceptionalism my @$$.

On the only postive note I can muster today,I can say at least that the debates last night didn't begin to resemble that stupid reality show hype crap that CNN/Tea Party Express foisted on the public last time....but the depth is still lacking. No one asks any real questions.

September 23, 2011 - 11:08 am

Way to downplay the caller's question about the Wall Street protests. Thousands of people camping on site for a week doesn't constitute "a few people showing up sporadically and some getting arrested"

If anybody has any doubt about DRShow's EXTREME liberal bias, just look at the panel for the "news roundup". Panelists from NPR, Washington Post, and National Journal. Nice echo chamber.

FOX may be extremely biased also, but at least their news shows are fair.

September 23, 2011 - 11:11 am

Great question about the Wall Street protests, predictably bad answer. Oh, we've written about the things they are protesting, they assured us. But nothing has happened, has it? So thousands of people turn out and protest, and that's too much for the media talking heads, who imagine themselves as people who set the agenda, rather than people who cover the news. Some people have showed up, some people have been arrested. That's not the way I've heard it. I've heard that if it were happening in an official enemy's country, we'd be calling it the "(fill in the blank) ________ Spring." Why should we believe anything they say about anything after this disgraceful performance? We shouldn't, of course.

September 23, 2011 - 11:14 am

The volatility of the stock market shows what a foolish notion it is to assume that there was anyplace one can put money and watch it grow, other than in a savings account (if those still exist?). We cannot "invest" our way to financial security, we can only finance actual projects and businesses we think will make money and hope, to get a return - but it is a risk. The only things absolutely making money in the stock market right now are the computer algorithms making split second trades. I would have thought the advent of these would have shown everyone the perversion of Wall Street from it's original purpose.

September 23, 2011 - 11:17 am

Boomer- running as Pyrate candidate- will you help?

Ron Paul used to be the extremist before sixty second controversies for mass media

actually has a plan- within real world

whose controversial stands BLOCK him from mainstream
'official' support.

Answered your question- how about your support?

(as maverick Republican and Texan to support legalization of marijuana in the... well forever... as not only foolish and wasteful BUT against the American philosophy of live and let live(though taxed like any other product and inspected for consumer safety) eliminating a long standing government/civilian profit mill and opening up paths to any Americans seeking help/treatments and elimination of bribes and corruption from the 'black market' economic incentives. If a law enforcement individual can make in a night what they earn in a year- law loses. (80 -20 rule)

BUT that crazy politician been in Congress forever and is a doctor to boot-as elected before rule that only professional spun millionaire lawyers may be admitted- an knows naught of healthcare or any crisis)

Military health care- too good for ANY American. Commiesocialist healthcare for troops unAmercian.

Treating sickness for free- what are you a Jesus/Mohamad freak?
