Eric Greitens: "The Heart and the Fist"

Former navy seal, humanitarian and author Eric Greitens on why we still need heroes at home and in the battlefield.

Eric Greitens has traveled to some of the world’s most desperate and dangerous conflict zones, first as a teenage volunteer and later as a much-decorated lieutenant in the US navy SEALS. Throughout his life and public service, a deep concern for human suffering has provided the common thread. In his book “The Heart and the Fist” Eric Greitens tells his story firsthand – how a young Rhodes scholar transformed into an elite warrior and then eventually into a humanitarian and civic leader. He joins us to discuss why he believes it is vital to remain both compassionate and strong, and why a soldier’s work is never done.

I am wondering how your guest feels about public comments from another Seal in in an unusual area.

Excerpted here are Commander L.R. Bremseth's views in a report he made for the Marine Corps War College.

On the subject of "remote viewing," a mental technique the CIA explored in the area of intelligence gathering, Commander Bremseth "...addresses warfare, both conventional and asymmetric, in his paper and then urges transcendent approaches.

In fact, we might consider that variations on Bremseth’s term transcendent warfare could be 'transcendent operations' or 'transcendent solutions.' These terms provide a broader scope of use for remote viewing and other kinds of anomalous cognition.

Disease, poverty, hunger, injustice, crime, drug abuse, slavery, child abuse, political corruption, pollution, climate change and similar serious problems that currently challenge us may also be useful targets for transcendent operations and solutions.

For people interested in these problems and possible solutions, as well as the national defense applications that Navy SEAL officer Bremseth explored in his paper, the unconventional, unusual and transcendent phenomena of remote viewing and anomalous cognition seem to be valuable resources.

Bremseth demonstrated courage and insight to tackle such a sensitive topic for his Marine Corps War College report. His paper is worthwhile reading for anyone with an open mind and an interest in human potential.

In fact, if taken to its natural and logical conclusion, Bremseth’s concept of transcendence would bring us to a better world and achieve the peace, security, happiness, prosperity, beauty and discovery that, for now, we can only dream of."

Can Eric tell us (since he is an expert on US Foreign Relationship + Wars)

Why did we Invade Iraq? What was the "real motive"?

Don't remember of being "told" by our government.
Asked many scholars and journalists ... they all start by saying .... "I think" or "Probably" or Maybe or Presumably.....

The bottom line is we are clueless and the people who own the Microphone are part of the cover-up and dumbing down of our population who are confused with ignorance.

Why do we kill and die in Iraq? Gotta be a simple question.

How many times we heard this guy's wishy washy military stories that sells his books and takes the focus away from the real topic that NPR refuses to deal with.

The event that killed over 2400 Americans

THE COLLAPSE OF THE TOWERS!!!!!
Especially the Mysterious Collapse of WTC #7 on 9/11 at 5:20 pm all by itself, at free-fall speed.

What is the problem? American People cannot understand Physics 101?

What are we afraid of ... especially the Owner of WTC #7 has publicly said that they brought down WTC #7 that afternoon On Demand [with controlled demolition]

NPR's very own Ombudsman's Office telling its member stations to "avoid" this topic at all costs.

We are not going away. After mocking the 9/11 Truth Movement, Geraldo Rivera has joined the club. How? He took the time (5 min) and looked at the "evidence".... Daaaa!!!

Bring Richard Gage to this program, and we will keep quiet.

Hello: I read this book a few months ago and I cannot stop recommending it. It is informative, concise and well balanced. It also inspires deeper thinking in the reader. Thanks for having Mr. Greitens on the show.

The work you've done with your life is excellent. Thank you for creating such a healing and meaningful program for our veterans. Your story is inspiring and you are a hero.

As Lt. Col. Smedley Butler so eloquently stated, "War is a racket." We patronize the service of Americans abroad in countries we create havoc and praise them as heroes when, if fact, and for the most part, they are being used a pawns in a rich man's game for control of wealth and power. Sad....

Is that true that some members of the Navy Seals can pump 500 push-ups all at once.

Wow. I am sure the ones who were sent to "capture" Bin Laden could do 3000 push-ups in 3 seconds .... they were the Best of The Best!!!

We are so proud of them.

But yet .... this frail and elderly who could not walk without a walking stick "15 years ago", could scare 17 of the Super Seals [made threatening gesture - without a weapon.... fingernails?) and then had to shoot/kill him and go 850 miles to Indian Ocean to dump his Body; and then look at his dead Sister's DNA and conclude that "probably it was Osama".

Good Job Paulo

We need more of you.
Keep speaking up.

Don't let these guys win over The Peace Activists

If only American's knew who does things "just for Money" like this Greiten guy. War + Military and then talk about kids + peace => Book Sales + Speaking $$$

What an exceptional human being you are, following great men from Missouri. This was a great interview...mcain

It doesnt stop there Lesley, as most of these Seals are CIA assets. Greitens "humanitarian" missions to places like Bolivia are more a cover for something else, like toppling a socialist regime. When a Navy Seal is in a foreign country, he's on a mission for sure, but not to keep the street kids from sniffing glue.

Unfortunately, NPR and the liberal media, continue to sell out and insult our collective intelligence, with this nonsense.

Mr. Greitens' story reminds me of all the underground workers there who refused to take part in prejudice, of the Norwegians who wore paper clips during WWII to protest the treatment of their Jewish neighbors, and the Whitwell Middle School students who created a memorial with these paperclips as they learned this lesson. I am thankful for his example of charity, his pure love. I will always be able to look to him as a hero.

I was running errands but caught about half the show. From it I got two valuable personal insights. Keeping traumatized veterans busy resonates with my keeping my own self busy so as not to dwell on certain things in my life. Pointing out that the non-violent like Gandhi and Warriors are made of much the same stuff and offer themselves to the same risk of harm or death when facing into conflict, solves a paradox in my thinking. I have deep honor, respect and gratitude for military people and veterans. I also have a commitment to non-violence. As one who grew up in World War II I can not call myself a complete pacifist. It is good to have insight into how we hold together our honoring both Warriors and the Non-Violent and give thanks for both.

Please American's Think About This, instead of believing these People who are Sworn to Keep us in State of War and Continious Fear why we send our unconditional love, respect and MONEY towards their way.

United States of America has two natural enemies:
Mexico and Canada

People in other countries cannot and will not hate us, unless we do some illegal and immoral crap ... ie. bombimg the hell of out Libya due to lies that are created in Tel-Aviv and funneled thru our Media.

Why would I spend a penny and or risk my life to punish somebody in Mongolia, if the Mongolians did not do anything against my "Homeland".

Daaaa, simple math.
Did I confuse you with sarcastic anology?
