A Conversation with Grover Norquist

Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist explains why he's holding Republicans to his no-new-taxes pledge. He talks about his role in the GOP and the current debt ceiling battles.

Time is running out for Democrats and Republicans to negotiate to raise the federal debt ceiling. The U.S. will default on its loans in nineteen days, unless politicians reach agreement. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell warned the Republican brand could be “destroyed” if congress allows the government to default.. But many in his party have dug in against a compromise. And anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist is holding Republican lawmakers to the pledges his organization asked them to sign, opposing any tax increases. He joins Diane to discuss taxes, spending and debt negotiations.

Really disappointing, Diane. Did you do any research on this guy? I could have told you that he wasn't going to advocate getting rid of any one federal department -- and I don't have your job!

And you never asked him far more important questions like why he has this daffy tax pledge in the first place. Clearly, governments need flexibility (something he actually advocates) and the ability to correct past mistakes (like the massive deficits his GOP cronies ran up), so why does Grover want to deny government flexibility in this one area and the ability to correct the massive mistakes his political allies made?

You also got way too fixated on the bathtub quote. Who cares what he has said? (You know he ghost wrote that quote, right? He never actually said it, how just got someone to say that he said it). At any rate, it was far more important to explore why he thinks what he thinks than to fixate on something he didn't actually in the past.

Also, why did you hang up on the caller who called him a traitor? Ok, someone said something intemperate. Ohhhhh! Can't have that! Was the caller's comment anymore uncivil than claiming to say that you want to drown government in a bathtub? It's completely understandable that people are angry with someone like Grover. Let him fact the anger he's generated because you know he doesn't EVER interact with people who strongly disagree with him.

Oh, and you never asked him about Jack Abramoff. That unforgivable.

You need to step it up, Diane.
