Rosamund Lupton: "Sister"

Author Rosamund Lupton's debut novel tells the story of a young woman's murder and her sister's passion to uncover her killer.

British author Rosamund Lupton’s debut novel, “Sister,” begins with a letter. Older sister Beatrice writes, “Dearest Tess, I’d do anything to be with you right now.” But Tess has been found dead. She was discovered in a public bathroom with cuts on her arms. The police suspect suicide, but Beatrice won’t accept it. As she grieves, she also begins to search for Tess’s killer. The mystery drives the novel toward a surprising final twist, but along the way eloquently explores the ethics of genetics, the experience of grief, and the deep bond of sisterhood.

I don't think Diane chose this topic. She likes meaningful classic literature and has excellent taste.

I, for one, am truly sick and tired of bloody murder and revenge displacing news content in every media outlet. At the retirement home residents subsist on a steady news diet of bleeding ledes to the detriment of healthy interaction. They probably were addicted before they were admitted. All the news magazines on the networks and many cable channels have a bloody murder content now and I just can't bear seeing Diane wash over that dam.

I have several brothers, but it is to my one sister that I cling. We share and know each other's history (including the deaths of our parents in our childhood) as no other person can. I plan to buy your book, Ms Lupton, but do I really want to read of the LOSS of a sister? I appreciate, though, that you say it is more about love, than grief.

I found Lupton's storytelling compelling; she got the complex emotional bond between sisters just right, all wrapped nicely in a family-drama-murder-mystery. And she writes beautifully; nothing mawkish or extraneous mars her work. My kind of writer. I was sorry to get to the end, but delighted by what I found there. Great read!

Elaine Charles is also reviewing "sister" soon. I found it slightly droll, not knowing quite what to make of a mystery / thriller...I will wait for the the Book Report show.
