The panelists talk about how the U.S.'s killing of Osama bin Laden might change public perception of President Obama's leadership abilities ahead of the 2013 presidential election and explore some early "missteps" by the White House in describing the circumstances of the raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan:

Difficult to understand the timing of this visit to 'Ground Zero' - the coverage of it seemed to be an anniversary of the event but May 5th is not.
Coincidence that this was scheduled to happen on the heels of the killing of bugaboo Osama?
Now what is the reason to continue spending $150 million PER DAY - as well as all the foreign aid going to the enemies to keep up the fight?
While we cut domestic spending, services to the most vulnerable here at home, our military is not able to defend us at home due to the fact that they are not here - mayhaps it is time to stop foreign aid and cut the pentagon's budget as well as services to us here at home.

IT would be nice if your reporters were accurate.

It was an advisor to President Obama who said the thing about 8% unemployment and that was based on a larger stimulus than was passed.

To say as a fact that President Obama promised an 8% unemployment rate as a guaranteed result of the stimulas is simply a lie. This is how false story lines enter our politcal discussion. A reporter from the NYTs should be better, but then again it was the paper that gave us Judith Miller.

Now that Osama bin Laden is dead can we separate the Taliban question from the Al Qaeda question? While the Taliban supported Al Qaeda when they were in power the problem with the Taliban is simply of who controls the government of Afghanistan, not any direct threat to the US. We know that any government that intertwines religion and government is bad for the people of that country and frequently is threatening to countries elsewhere. We should explicitly state that as the goal for creating a modern government system in Afghanistan. If we do not believe that, then we should get out. The fight against Al Qaeda will move to another location.

"Death" of Osama bin Laden

How do we actually know that Osama bin Laden was actually killed in the operation in Abbottabad, since Obama won't release the photos, and claims to have buried him at sea. (A Pakistani friend of mine said that this burial at sea was non-compliant with Islam, since bin Laden had presumably been killed on land.) Perhaps he was only stunned, is still alive and experiencing *very* enhanced interrogation measures by the CIA and others. I know this sounds like just another conspiracy theory, but with the later White House revelations that bin Laden did not return fire on the Navy Seals, thereby retracting the earlier story, on top of the other confusion of the White House, I think this hypothesis of mine needs to be addressed and dismissed with conclusive evidence (DNA won't apply, in this scenario!).

This is ridiculous. When you were talking about the GOP debates, you said that the top tear candidates hadn't entered yet and then proceeded to name a bunch of people who either aren't running, polling terrible or are complete unknowns. I mean, the ambasedor to china? wtf? Who cares about him?

Then, the guy who's right in the pack AND polling better against Obama than all the other GOP contenders barley deserves a mention?

You are SOOOOO obsolete.

Plus, i really don't like that brittish girl who guest hosts. She's just too King George.

May 6, 2011 - 10:43 am

I have to say that your guest was right on both counts and that is that there has been too much spending along with tax cuts and wars. So both parties are correct, the only difference is in the beginning of this decade the GOP did both and that's where a great portion of the deficit has come from.

To the "deathers"...If Osama bin Laden is NOT dead I'm sure we will hear from him. Good grief people. Where was all this scepticism and outrage about sovereign nations when it came to invading Iraq?
Osama bin Laden is dead. Good riddance!
Thank you President Obama.

Seems to me there is no answer to the question about releasing the Bin Laden photograph. There are pros and cons. Why are we dwelling on the question?

The morality of executing bin Laden is a serious moral and legal issue, and a worthwile topic for debate in my opinion.

May 6, 2011 - 10:54 am

if the administration could figure out what happened, maybe the people wouldn't be so skeptical. Supposedly they were watching on TV and still thought bin ladin was armed and using woman as human shields? right.

I think bin ladin is dead and the administration screwed up royaly by trying to lie. It wasn't a confusion of info. They watched it in real time. That's the only damned picture we get of it is them sitting on their butts watching TV while the real heros were doing the dirty work.

Then, after their heroic telivision watching and dumping the body in the water, they lie for two days about what happened. They have no one to blame but themselves.

Rhys Williams...
There was no video inside the compound. I do agree that the media should have been told to wait for details until the SEALS had been debriefed. But you know how it is with today's news media...being first is more important than waiting for facts.

May 6, 2011 - 11:21 am

It wasnt the media spouting off. It was the administration.

You think CIA cheif can say what he said and the media should be told to bite their tounge? That's backwards.

May 6, 2011 - 11:55 am

Was it my imagination or did John Dickerson mistakenly refer to Bin Laden as "Obama" and no one caught it???? If so, the implications of the subconscious blurring and substitution of one for the other speaks volumes in terms of the source of the visceral and inordinate fear some people have about Obama.

May 6, 2011 - 12:36 pm

For a guy with a Peace Prize, he sure is responsible for a lot of people meeting their maker. Just saying...

May 6, 2011 - 12:55 pm

You are aware that the Nobel Prize is named after the guy who invented dynamite, yes? Not to mention that Willy Brandt won it as well and then he turned loose three Black September Palestinian terrorists that had been part of the group that killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Yes and transocean had the safest year on record in 2010 - the gulf oil spill being only one incident.
Isn't that all called "Spin"?

May 6, 2011 - 2:29 pm

Transocean did get an award as one of the safest rigs from Interior Dept under Obama. Here is the proof.

I think it's obvious why President Bush did not want to show coffins from Afghanistan. He wanted to hide this ultimate price that of some of our servicemen paid so as not to have people being outraged enough to protest. Same kind of thing with President Obama not showing the pictures of torture. I find this despicable.
