Osama bin Laden's Death: What it Means for the U.S. and the Region

How will the death of Osama bin Laden affect al-Qaida's leadership and the region? Diane and guests explore what the U.S. action means for relations with Pakistan, the war in Afghanistan, and the battle against global terrorism.

Osama bin Laden’s death has been hailed as a triumph for the United States, its intelligence operations, its military, and its president. But it also raises many questions. As new details of bin Laden’s death emerge, there are deepening suspicions in Washington over what Pakistan’s government knew. White House counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan said it was inconceivable that bin Laden didn’t have a support system. There are also new questions about the future of al-Qaida and who will lead it. And from critics of the war in Afghanistan, the death of al-Qaida’s leader has renewed calls to withdraw troops. What bin Laden’s death in Pakistan means for the region, the U.S. and global terrorism.

I'm glad he is gone, but my, has it cost a lot money. Rather than spending all that money and manpower abroad, the US should focus on domestic security (borders, air travel, sea-ports, internet). Going abroad is a very indirect way of defending the country and generates enemies.

Dear ecgberht:

Hope you're sitting down for this one, but I agree with what you wrote on May 4, 2011 @ 10:12 am! (It can happen occasionally.)

One slight quibble: for the very reasons you cited in your second point, I think our actions were in compliance with international law.

However, I will happily defer on that point to anyone who is an expert on the subject, and can provide references to back up a contrary opinion.

May 4, 2011 - 8:50 pm

Oh, and one general comment to those who (like Kathleen) insist on posting the same piece (or minor variations) over and over: repetition does not make you correct!

May 4, 2011 - 8:55 pm

Not surprising that Diane Rehm doesn't challenge Michael Scheuer's outrageous and absurd comment that "Pakistan is a far better ally than the Israelis."

Despite the moronic opinion of Ebrahim Moosa, Duke University professor of religion and Islamic studies, taking out UBL was not only in compliance with international law, but U.S. domestic law as well.

"Executive Order 12333, amended by Executive Order 13355, in 1998, this proscription against assassination was reinterpreted, and relaxed, for targets who are classified by the United States as connected to terrorism."

May 5, 2011 - 2:15 pm

Gee, cicero, do you think it might have anything to do with the fact that the very next speaker (Mr. Hirsh) gently disagreed with Scheuer, or that the comment was really off-topic (since this was in response to a caller's remark about killing Bin Laden to shut him up, and to Diane's comment about bad mouthing Pakistan to protect them from being thought complicit in the killing), or that since it was the end of the show she wanted to give the other guests a chance to respond?

Just because someone doesn't act as your mouthpiece or sock puppet isn't proof of "bias" on their part. But your mindless and automatic condemnation of Ms. Rehm definitely shows your bias!

P.S. - Though I agree with you that his comment was both absurd and outrageous. That, combined with earlier remarks he made about Israel, make me wonder if he has an anti-Israel bias. (Note: I said "wonder", I certainly don't know if he does.)

May 5, 2011 - 2:21 pm

Dear cicero:

Regarding your Comment of May 5, 2011 @ 2:15 pm, I'd like to see your credentials for arguing what is or is not "in compliance with international law". All that Executive Order does is indicate (not necessarily prove) that our actions were in compliance with American law.

On the other hand, since we do live in a democracy, with separation of powers, checks and balances, and a Bill of Rights, the mere fact the President issues an Executive Order proves nothing! Illegal Executive Orders have been issued before, and doubtless will be issued again.

But to repeat myself: I think that killing Bin Laden was a legal act.

(On this one, I'm also cynical enough not to care. Good riddance to bad rubbish!)

May 5, 2011 - 2:31 pm

Oh, and could you provide a link (or at least a source) for that "moronic opinion"?

I did a quick search and the only thing I could find was the professor commenting that burial at sea might not accord with Islamic custom, but he doubted Muslims would really mind since Bin Laden was such a [insert insulting term of your choice to finish this sentence.]

Diane seems to have strategically selected her guests on this show for their whininess. We now have an opportunity to declare victory and return our troops home with honor, and all these guys can do is whine about how killing Bin Laden makes him a martyr and how the triumph of the Taliban is inevitable and how nothing the US does is working. As usual, Doug Macgregor can be right and make his point in such an offensive manner that it negates his opinion. I say this is a great opportunity to give Afghanistan a chance to function on its own, with a reasonable infusion of development aid to make things better for the little guy with a donkey and a wife in a burkha. Do that, and keep our powder dry for the next national security challenge - which won't be a long time coming. And stop broadcasting apologies for isolationism.

Israel has continually ignored one US President after another's pathetic request to stop building and expanding illegal and immoral settlement in the West Bank and illegal housing in E Jerusalem. Israel has continually ignored US request for them to sign the Non proliferation treaty. This persistent willingness and arrogance by Israel to ignore these request while being more than willing to take billions of dollars from the US has undermined US National Security for decades.

These critical issues and how they infuriate Muslims in that part of the world as well as undermine US National Security have been brought up by Queen Noor, the King of Jordan, Former President Jimmy Carter, Dr. Bryzinski (sp) Zinni, Scowcroft, General Jones, Secretary of Defense Gates, former weapons inspector Scott Ritter, former CIa analyst Ray McGovern, Kathleen and Bill Christison and many many more

Micheal Scheuer is willing to tell the truth and he is in good company

Anti Israeli policies that are in violation of international law and agreements and how these persistent violations not only undermine US National Security but Israel based on the 67 border security too

You need to work on your google skills.

"The violation of Pakistani sovereignty and taking out a target on that country's territory will also be of concern to human rights groups and those concerned about setting bad precedents in international law." Ebrahim Moosa,

No. But Diane's silence does speak volumes.

Are you Diane's PR manager and publicist? If not, you should apply for the job. I have provided examples where Rehm has made comments that were rooted in fiction not fact. You were indifferent to these problems as well. Rehm has guests on that extol the virtues of Palestinians, while making Israel the Boogeyman of the Middle East.

Here is another instance where pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel propaganda permeates The Diane Rehm Show where the host and guests allow this drivel to go unchallenged throughout the show.

BTW: As long as NPR hosts act as your sock puppet you are in argyle heaven.
