33 miners: Imagine if the Pinochet junta were still in power. We might never have known these men were still alive in a vestibule a half mile down, and the junta may have refused to provide the resources, or to have caused the owning business to provide the resources, to rescue them. After all, the junta had come to power under CIA backed overthrow of elected government and were killing more than 33 opponents a day, mostly by pushing them out of transport planes over the ocean.
This, we should hope, is a significant step in Chile's ongoing recovery from USA induced fascism.
(You know the Great Depression mentality has returned when "baby in a well" rescues are the news lede. Ask yourself what vital issues and events were excluded by this round-the-clock, all-outlet coverage.)
I'm glad they're out, and I hope they never have to go back to work.
(I kind of agree of G L Howard's sentiments.)
But -- what about France?? Major news! Lots happening. Millions on the streets battling the government's (pro-big business) plans. Please discuss the happenings in France.
The education of girls and basic human rights for women are key factors for a long-term economic stability and peace. Will we throw away a real chance for peace if we negotiate away the rights of women or will we ensure these rights when we negotiate with The Taliban? I believe that the ONLY good reason for fighting a war is to protect the rights of women, children, and men.
How remarkable is the contrast of the 33 miners were able to work together to the popylar reality shows where participants are isolated and encourage and rewarded to decieve and back stab each other.
This reflects on an aspect of our society where little or no value is placed on an individual scarficing for a greater social good. We are all about me, my and mine.
