Tests on a new cap for the BP oil leak and concerns about the administration's call for a six-month ban on deep-water drilling. The ongoing efforts to stop the flow of oil and reduce the risk of leaks going forward.

Seems we should target tax cuts to business that hire americains in U.S. based companys in USA, not to companys that hire non U.S. Citizins
This would give more americains jobs and there jobs will be taxed and the money will come back to goverment to help more citizens. When companys hire people from other countrys there personal taxes go to other countrys and doesnt help USA. Giving tax breaks to people who dont hire americans doesnt help the masses in U.S. Only helps rich get richer and no guarantee they will hire or help others.
I would be interested in a discussion of banning drilling versus pumping as I understand existing wells if producing are unaffected. Can the guests quantify the impact of a deep-water drilling ban: number of wells, number of workers...
Also I understand the administration has basically instituted a work slowdown when it comes to approving new leases on both shallow and deep water drilling. What is the economic impact of this de-facto moratorium?
It continues to feel like this administration has no coordinated energy policy and is more reactionary than proactive.
What is BP doing with all the oil they have been pumping from the well? Are they making a profit on this crude?
Comparing aircraft to oil wells is similar. I remember when an entire fleet of DC 10's were grounded when a structural problem was discovered in one plane. The oil industry just failed spectacularly in the case of the deep water horizon and has admitted that in all of the other deep water wells they have no way to guarantee safety. They should drill at least one relief well in advance with every deep water well.
the helium web page paints a realistic, strong, doomsday possibility of a methane bubble burst. What are your thoughts?
I don't understand why with the technology available today in everything from mini vans to space craft, that there is not some kind of sensor in the off shore rigs that says "this is the high/low safe psi for these lines. then when the psi varies the whole system shuts down pumping etc., until the problem is located. One would assume that with something as vital as our oceans that there would be such a simple thing in place. Why is it not.
We as a people seem to be content with the situation - or have we resigned!?
Everyone out there can make BP feel our discontent and outrage - DON'T BUY GAS FROM A BP STATION! Its that simple.
In 1963 while I was a geology major at a major Midwest university, one of my frat brother's father worked for a major oil company. He was driving a new Ford full-size sedan which had been converted to LPG as a test car for the company. The conversion cost about $200-$300 (in 1963) about 10% of a new car price. The car did have smaller trunk because of the conversion. There is plenty LPG and natural gas, if we were forced to use other source we wouldn't need oil from a mile deep in the Gulf.
The Jones Act has been used as political football by the Republicans to disparage union agreements. According to FactCheck.org, the Jones Act has not hampered spill response efforts. Furthermore, offers of help from foreign countries is not free help. Often times foreign countries are offering services but they are not free or the foreign country doesn't meet US standards for safety. Accepting foreign aid is different from purchasing resources.
I would like to note that, in my opinion, the moratorium is to broad. Do you think the government is overstepping their bounds? And what are the odds of it being taken to court and overridden again?
Personally, I don't blame a single company. That would be too simple. It's much more then that and we as Americans need to be more involved in the system which empowers such companys as BP to be so careless. We shut our eyes until something utterly blows up and then blame the company, the government.... I'm from the day of the sit in's and we need to stop being lazy and help our young people care for our country and the environment.
The gentleman from Texas who touted his credentials as an oil lawyer showed bias in his comments, saying (cannot remember the exact quote but the gist is) "Obama administration has been telling people not to come down here or eat food from the gulf." In fact, the exact opposite is the reality. President Obama has made repeated visits to survey the needs of the region, specifically ate seafood from the gulf and encouraged others to do so, and the First Lady has aired public service announcements encouraging people to take their tourism dollars to the gulf area (similar to when President Bush 43 told people to go shopping after 9-11).
There are facts and there are beliefs, and sometimes people say things that aren't true to support their perspective.
I was very disappointed by the discussion today on the moratorium on deep water oil drilling. Your guests continually talked about the potential lost jobs that may result. If the biggest oil disaster in U.S. history --somewhere between 92 and 182 MILLION gallons of oil have spilled thus far--does not justify a short pause in our rush to extract every last drop of oil from this planet, than what will? Not only is deep water drilling dangerous--for workers, wildlife, ecosystems--but the burning of this fossil fuel contributes to global warming. It is time to transition away from a carbon-based economy. Some jobs in that economy will naturally be shed, but we can create new ones in greener industries. We should have been doing this decades ago. Let's let this disaster be a wake-up call.
My first impression of the recovery from the IXTOC blowout was that things were back to normal in two years. But I've been told that species still haven't returned and that fishing is still depressed in the Bay of Campeche three decades later. Whats the truth?
Seems to me the issues here are being muddied by the same thing that muddies every issue lately: GREED! Nobody cares about the dangers of deep sea drilling as long as the drilling is lining their pockets.
Same with the oil coming on shore. "Don't tell anyone it's dangerous. They might not come here & it'll hurt business."
Also, the only concern seems to be for the oil coming on shore, because it has a direct impact on commerce. The oil being dispersed below the surface, & it's impact on the environment doesn't get much press.
We are such a short-sighted nation. Eventually it will catch up with us, but then it will be too late. We'll be living in hell on earth!
The only source of comfort I can find about this horrifying event, is that President Obama and his administration are thinking long term, taking no chances and working hard to direct our country toward clean energy. This to me is a responsible and sustainable integrity that is starting to change communities all over America. In regard to job loss while the moratorium stays in effect, is that not BP's responsibility to compensate those people?
Many Thanks,

Dianne, here is the link to the Russian scientist whom one of your callers was talking about.

Subsidence issues?
I haven't heard anyone addressing the issue of what effect this leak is having on the underlying geological structure of the sea floor. With the loss of these millions of gallons of pressurized volume from the structure beneath, is the strata at risk for subsidence? And could this have a seismic impact on the geological structure of the gulf? Shouldn't someone be exploring this risk?

Sorcha Faal, the author of this nonsense, is a devoted conspiracy theorist. Did you really think what the caller was saying was factual?

I've noticed that Mrs. Rehm has commented and questioned why foreign offers of aid have been rejected by the administration. In fact, several foreign flagged vessels have been helping in the cleanup, not many but some.
